"Bostons own Jada makes time for the Jimmy Fund"

I've been eagerly awaiting new material from the Boston-based pop/R&B girl group Jada, and so far no news. Their last single "Breakup Song" (written and produced by Andrew Frampton, JuN!oR Da K!d, Wayne Wilkins and Savan Kotecha) was released digitally in September of 2009, following the release of their debut single, the RedOne-produced, Akon-written "American Cowboy." Between then and now the girls have been working on their yet-to-be-released debut album as well as making a series of public appearances, mostly in their native Boston (including singing at a Celtics game during the exciting 2010 playoffs.)

Signed to Motown/Universal Records, Jada has clocked studio time with many talents including J. R. Rotem, Dallas Austin, Swizz Beats, RedOne, Akon, Ryan Tedder, Toby Gad and Wyclef Jean among others. The girls also stepped out on tour last year with The Plain White T's, Lloyd and Brooke Hogan, not to mention being featured on the soundtrack to Bring It On: In It To Win It. Hopefully we get some new Jada material before the year is over. I think these girls are talented and beautiful and if they keep putting out slick tracks like "American Cowboy" (check out the video below) they really could make an impact. We just need to keep the momentum going and not wait so long between singles.

"'Dressed Up Divas' Womens Wear Daily Magazine"

For the girl group Jada, fashion is a whole new world. Shortly after arriving at a recent photo shoot, the members of the band sifted through the wardrobe rack, calling out names of designers with a girlish excitement. Based in Boston, they joked that they have to come to New York to get their fashion thrills since New England isn't exactly a fashion mecca.

As a young group on the edge of breaking into the music business, the girls are a work in progress, both in their music and their wardrobes. Recently, band member Jacyn Tremblay, 22, has been trading up from basic jeans looks, an inclination that started the first time she tried on a Versace dress. "It made me feel...a bit more pulled together," she said.

Developing a distinct style is just as important to the musicians as their sound, a mix of pop and R&B featuring sophisticated harmonies that recall the soulfulness of gospel. Jada includes Tremblay, April Forrest, Elle Wine and Lauren O'Keefe and will release its first single, "Since We Made Love," on the Universal Motown label in March. The debut album is slated for summer, followed by a nationwide tour. For the album, the group worked with a diverse roster of writers and producers including Dallas Austin, Babyface, Swizz Beatz, Jonathan "J.R." Rotem, Danjahandz and the Clutch.

Jada was started almost four years ago by Bristol Entertainment, an artist development company in Boston that was behind musicians such as Niia on Yclef Records and The Dropkick Murphys on Warner. Unlike bands that have one lead singer, that duty rotates among Jada's members, none of whom plays an instrument.

"It's rare to find a group whose members can each sing lead, but still possesses an interlocking harmony that makes them a cohesive group," said Sylvia Rhone, president and chief executive of Universal Motown. "When Jada sang a cappella for me, there was an instant connection."

While their sound is distinctive, fashion is a key part of the package. "It's not just about the music," Forrest, 18, said. "More so than ever before, people tend to listen with their eyes."
To help define what they're going for — an urban look that remains accessible to a wide audience — the four got together to do what girls do: gather women's magazines and cut out images of their favorite celebrities, which they then presented to stylists. One look they all agree on: Gwen Stefani. "She's funky and very fashion-forward," said Tremblay. "We want to be like Gwen but with an even younger twist."

O'Keefe and Wine, both 20, like high-end European designers including Roberto Cavalli and Yves Saint Laurent. O'Keefe's dream look is "Gwen Stefani meets Victoria Beckham." She describes her style as "chic funky" with tailored skirts, high-waisted shorts and heels. But, she added, "I also love that old Hollywood glam pinup girl style with sweetheart lines and lacy gloves."

Wine, on the other hand, prefers Stefani with a touch of Lindsay Lohan. A sexy dress and 5-inch heels make up one of her favorite looks. Wine isn't a stranger to fashion — her mother, Debra, founded Debra Wine Designs, which produces shoes and watches as well as clothes. "I grew up with fashion stuffed in my face all the time," said Wine, adding that she might one day want to try her hand at designing.

But Tremblay and Forrest admittedly are not as fashion-conscious. Tremblay identifies with a more casual "Kelly Clarkson meets Ashlee Simpson" look, and prefers Diesel and Seven jeans, and loves bracelets and vintage rings. Forrest likes Juicy Couture and Baby Phat, and feels most at home in bright tops and hoodies paired with jeans — although she says she'll throw in "some really crazy kicks or accessories to make it a little more urban."

The Jada girls hope to nail down their look as a group and make it as cohesive as when their four individual voices come together in an a cappella harmony. "Each girl has her own sense of what she wants," said O'Keefe, "but it's a matter of putting it together as a whole." - Michelle Edgar Womens Wear Daily Magazine

Bio

The four members of Jada came together while studying at Boston's Bristol Recording and Voice Studios. Each singer has brought her individual perspective and style to the table - Jacyn's tastes run from pop to rock and from Pink to Paramore; April takes inspiration from hip-hop's urban sound and fashion, blasting T.I. and Timbaland every day of the week; Lauren's musical influences stem from her growing up in suburban Philadelphia, home to neo-soul legends like Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild; Elle professes an eclectic appetite for music ranging from Rascal Flatts and John Legend to Lady Gaga.

In January 2007, Jada teamed up in a New York studio with Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter Toby Gad (Fergie, Beyonce, Natasha Bedingfield). The sessions proved a creative turning point for Jada, as they joined forces with Gad to co-write the powerhouse ballad, Is It Love. With its complex harmonies and distinctive verses, Is It Love gave Jada a cornerstone track from which to build their album upon.

Jada traveled to studios all over the country, from NYC and Atlanta to Miami and Los Angeles, collaborating with such superstars as Danja, Wyclef Jean, and J.R. Rotem. Sessions with Jordan Omley from production/songwriting team, The Jam (Leona Lewis, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks), were among the girls' favorites, yielding The Problem With Love, If You Wanna Go and the inspirational Hold On. An alliance with UK team Wayne Wilkins, Andrew Frampton, and Savan Kotecha (Natasha Bedingfield, Carrie Underwood, Delta Goodrem), resulted in the mid tempo Break Up Song and energetic club track Play a Playa, while NYC hitmakers Sturken&Rodgers (Christina Aguilera, Rihanna) contributed the poignant ballad, Shattered. For the album-closing Can't Let Go, Jada found a collaborator close to home in Ric Poulin, who produced the group-penned track.

As recording continued, Jada was awarded as Outstanding Pop/R&B Music Act at 2008's Boston Music Awards. The year culminated with a December session alongside producer RedOne (Lady Gaga, Brandy) at Jada's homebase, Bristol Studios. The sessions yielded Model That and the group's boisterous debut single, American Cowboy (co-written/produced by Akon), two tracks which provided the final bit of magic. The girls felt immediately that the songs were special, especially American Cowboy which they knew would serve as the perfect introduction to Jada's distinctive sonic vision.

With the album wrapped, the girls barely paused to catch their breath before embarking on a major national promotional tour, presenting American Cowboy at multi-format radio stations from coast to coast. The hectic schedule and nearly non-stop workload has proven to be a boon for Jada. The group maintains direct communication with their ever-increasing number of fans - a.k.a. the Jada Ninjas - by taking a hands-on approach to online relationships via MySpace, Facebook, and an ever-growing mailing list.

With boundless talent and irrepressible energy, Jada remain focused like a laser beam on their singular goal. The tightly knit harmonies aren't just something the four singers break out when the mics are turned on - united by fate, the girls of Jada have formed a bond that's closer to a family than a pop group.

That pugnacious spirit informs everything Jada does - from their dynamic stage show to the album's captivating creativity. The girls are working long and hard to reach the mountaintop and their innate sense of diligence and professionalism is certain to keep them pushing ever forward. Having already ascended this far, for Jada, the sky is now the limit.
