"University Students Form Band Jadens Move"

One of the things that make Austin the Live Music Capital of the World is the stunning variety of bands that express their art in creative ways. Jaden's Move does just that, offering unique lyrics in a conversational style that crosses demographics to grab all types of listeners.

Four men make up Jaden's Move: vocalist, guitarist and pianist Harmon Li, 27; guitarist and vocalist Stephen Shu, 27; bassist Andrew Shu, 24; and drummer and percussionist Daniel "Dex" Poindexter, 21, a radio-television-film senior. The older band members are UT alumni. They try to devote as much time to the band as they do to their day jobs by practicing once or twice a week, said Li.

"We'd love for the band to be our main job," Li said.

Li and the Shu brothers grew up together making music. After their original drummer moved away, they met Poindexter, who was playing drums for a church group at the time, through a mutual friend.

"They were looking to get more serious," Poindexter said. "We played together, and I guess they liked what they heard."

Li said Poindexter quickly fit in with the rest of the band.

"We've grown really close, because we spend so much time together," Li said. "We love music. It's kind of like how we hang out together."

They call themselves a rock band with alternative and indie influence and pride themselves on being able to make the audience rock out from the very first song. Some of their influences include Coldplay and Jimmy Eats World, Li said.

The band's sound has been related to that of popular artists such as Radiohead. However, Jaden's Move has vulnerable, emotional lyrics to distinguish their music from others and to allow people to relate to them. For example, the song "Another Day" includes the lines: "Is it too late to call you/I have some things to go through/And what they are involves both you and me/Is it too late to find out."

"We have good arrangements. We put stuff together really well, with catchy hooks," Poindexter said. "We have great lyrics, and they kind of walk that line between recognizable and unique."

Li creates the majority of the music's structure and lyrics, he said. New songs and ideas are then tested out at practice and either approved by the rest of the band or put aside.

"I bring in the skeleton, and they fill in the meat," Li said.

Jaden's Move recently released their first official EP, "A Narrow Scope," about four months ago. They made 1,000 copies of the album and have sold about 500, Li said.

"Being able to sit down in a real studio was a pretty big deal to us," said Stephen Shu.

The band performs about twice a month at Austin venues such as Antone's, the Red Eyed Fly, Momo's and Lighthouse. Sets are usually about 45 minutes long and consist of 10 original songs.

All of the band members were proud and excited to have the opportunity to perform at Antone's, they said.

It's fun to play for any size group, Andrew Shu said. "It's not necessarily about the fame or anything," he said. "It's just something we want to share with everybody."

The greatest part about performing is trying to win over the audience, Li said. "For better or worse, I like going in front of a new crowd. I like the challenge." - The Daily Texan

Bio

A four member group: Harmon, and the brothers Shu (Stephen, Andrew) grew up together making music. In college at Austin, Texas, they toyed with the idea of forming a band, eventually recruiting Daniel to complete their line-up. Together they began performing in clubs, talent shows, and any venue that would give them an opportunity, all the while developing a fanbase that stretches from the US to Canada. With two official EPs out, "A Narrow Scope..." and their new self-titled EP, the band has established and refined their musical identity. Their sound is best described as a mesh of British and pop rock, but their lyrics set them apart. Both conversational and vulnerable, their words show a sincerity that connects with listeners, young and old. The guys are taking full advantage of living in the great city of Austin and are excited to see just how far their songs will take them. Check them out live and be ready to see an unbelievable show!
