"Artist Interview: 1-on-1 with Jaecyn Bayne"

I am talking today with local rap artist Jaecyn Bayne. Jaecyn has been playing his way through an extremely competitive rap industry here in the city of Indianapolis but continues to perform as often as he can and continues to write lyrics nearly every day. Having a great personality and a drive to succeed is what makes Jaecyn a true musician. He has been playing music for quite some time and I felt that based on what I have heard of him musically and from what his fans say, he is not going anywhere for a while. Sit back as Jaecyn and I talk about his career and his music.

How long have you been rapping?
I have been rapping since 2004. I always kind of played around with words and I was really heavy into poetry before I got into hip hop. Then in June of 2004 it was like I went from Jean Grae to the Phoenix in lyric form.

When did you know that you wanted to make music a career choice?

Well I actually started rapping jokingly. A few friends of mine were into it already and I was with them one day and they told me to try it. I did, and oddly enough, came up with a verse that was way more dope than theirs (they’ll never admit that though). (Laughs) I actually started to take it serious after hearing people outside of my circle of friends say the liked it. It gave me motivation to keep giving them more of my minds thought processes in music form.

You have played quite a few shows that are collaborations. Is it hard getting solo shows for rappers?

No, I wouldn’t really say it’s hard. You’ve just gotta make your mark. I came in to performing with other people, then branched off as a solo artist with our label, Concrete Beats, and through that, I started doing more collaboration performances. As of late, myself and another solo artist on the label, Freeze, have been working on a joint project, so we’ve been doing shows together to promote the project.

Do you have another job or is music it?

Yeah, I’ve got a job. I wouldn’t consider it another job though. The job pays the bills. Music is my passion, so even if or when I do make it to on a larger scale, I’ll never consider that a job. It’ll just be me doing what I love to do and, ironically, getting paid ridiculous amounts for it. (Laughs)

What salad dressing do you use?

I’m actually not a salad kinda guy. Never have been. Meat and potatoes is the way to go for me. I need something to stick to the bones. I’m a little guy, so I need all the heavy foods I can get! (Laughs)

What are you drinking on stage?

Water. I try to save my “drinking” for after the performance. Otherwise, I’d be the guy up on stage telling the DJ to start the song over cause I forgot the lyrics to my own song. Intoxication is a muthafucka! (Laughs)

What is the largest crowd you have played for?

Actually, I’d have to say it was this past Saturday night, January 10th. I opened up for Too Short and Webbie at Club Industry here in Indy and it was pretty dope. Easily 350-400 people there. Wouldn’t sound like a lot to some people, but after all, it’s Indianapolis, so you can only expect so much! (Laughs)

The smallest?

The smallest (thinks) there’s been a few shows that only a handful of people have shown up. Most of them were due to bad weather or just were poorly promoted. Ended up being mostly just the performers that came out. So realistically, I wouldn’t even consider that a show. It’d be more like a sound check with everybody actually there doing their full set. (Laughs)

Who is your biggest influence?

Musically, I can’t say there’s just one. I’ve been influenced by a lot of people. Jay-Z, Rakim, Big L, Little Brother, Joe Budden; the list is almost endless. A few of them are mainstream. Anybody that is lyrically sound and changed the game with their wordplay has been an influence to me because that’s my focus. I listen to music to hear what people have to say because ultimately, that’s what its about. Its about the artist putting out something they feel in a way that the masses can relate to, so anybody that does that and I can relate to them, they’ve been an influence to me.

If you were not rapping what would you be doing?

According to my mom, I’d probably be doing something I know I have no right doing. (Laughs) No, I’ve always been into computers. Web design, graphic design, stuff like that. Went to Purdue for it for a little while, but never got as deep into it as I really wanted to. Everything I do know about it is all self-taught. I know you do web and graphic design too, so we’ll have to talk. (Laughs)

What do you think of today’s pop rap music like 50 Cent and Lil’ Wanye?

I can’t knock them for doing what they do. Just like I said, music is about expressing yourself in a way that others can relate to. On some level, there’s someone out there that can relate to them, so that’s why they are where they are and move the units that they do. Personally, I don’t think they’re really saying anything with significant substance. Th - Ricky

"Paul'Michael: P.M. to the A.M"

Bentley's, hidden in the domesticated locality known as Fishers, was the unsuspecting gathering place for some of Indianapolis' best hip hop and R&B talent on Thursday August 20th.

Dubbed “P.M. to the A.M.” and hosted by Paul'Michael Bair, the showcase of singers, dancers, rappers, and musicians was a musical buffet offering samples from a variety of styles and fortes. Each scheduled performer executed approximately three-to-five songs highlighting their particular aptitude, and then returned command of the stage to emcees Paul'Michael and Jaecyn Bayne. With virtually no set-up time needed between acts, the emcees entertained with comic relief, but never stayed long enough to get stale before moving into the next set. The formula worked; there was never a boring moment and always something fresh to look at on stage.

Three fifths of dance phenomenons Destined 2 Be were present. With a long list of accomplishments, including an appearance on NBC's reality television show America's Got Talent, the members are regarded as local heroes. When asked to define the dance style, member Kevin Jackson explains, "It's like our freestyles [turned] into choreography, basically. That's basically what we call it." After each individual dancer completed a series of moves on their own, they aligned themselves for a synchronized routine to “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. From slow and soulful to fast and fervent, Destined 2 Be and their skillful, sexy moves got the audience amped.

Sinclair Wheeler was the only artist who brought instruments other than a voice to Bentley's. As he prepared to commence his performance, a few opening bars from John Mayer's “No Such Thing” escaped his guitar. Disgruntled listeners started to boo and Wheeler chuckled, “I'm just kidding.” Utilizing a loop machine, he layered his own acoustic and electric guitar for a rich, bluesy opener. For his second selection, Wheeler called Destined 2 Be back to the stage and he joined them in a hot set of improve dance. But most impressive of all was his presentation of the sultry “Take You Home Tonight.” Again utilizing the loop machine, Wheeler added two more elements to the mix: his own voice and beat boxing skills. Nate Davis of The Franchize made a cameo and spit rhymes from the stage, as well as from the core of the audience. The star-studded collaborations continued when Jaecyn Bayne took the mic, adding a dash of his own spicy flavor to the song.

But the real star of the evening was Mr. Paul'Michael, celebrating his recent studio work and continued support of his peers and musical community. When he stepped on stage, this time not to facilitate but rather to perform, the dance floor flooded. The captivatingly magic pop music of the instant hit “Beauty Queen” brought them out of their chairs, but it was Bair's near-falsetto singing and killer dance moves that kept them there.

Active in the music scene since 2006, Paul'Michael's recent refocus on a career in music was partially spurred by his mother's battle with multiple sclerosis, among a number of other medical problems. Early in the evening between sets he called her to the stage to recognize her strength in continually overcoming the challenges placed in front of her. Bair credited her as the creator of his own life and noted that in recent months she had nearly lost hers. Reflecting on such daunting experiences, the mother and son agreed that every day is a gift that is to be cherished and utilized to its fullest capacity. It is this living philosophy that fuels Paul'Michael's work and pushes him to strive for excellence.

Bair's music is genuine and truly his own, finding inspiration for his songwriting in past relationships, infatuations, and lessons that life has taught him. Partnered with local producer C-Ray, Bair's first full-length debut is in the works, release date yet to be announced. With air play on Radio Now 100.9, performances popping up everywhere, and intense studio sessions, Paul'Michael has certainly proven himself as a distinguished musician and has the local following to prove it. His work is respectable and admirable, while refreshingly humble and meek.

Had it not been for my commitment to supporting local musicians coupled with PaulMichael's persistent presence on IndyMojo.com, I would have never, ever, ever known of or attended this show. However, through Paul'Michael's use of IndyMojo.com for one of its best intended purposes (networking, self-promotion, and generally making new friends), he is helping to engage the local hip hop community with the IndyMojo.com population, adding yet another layer to their already-diverse membership. Thanks to Paul'Michael and his desire to share his music with all tastes, I was able to bring my open mind to Bentley's and experience something totally new and fresh. Stepping outside of the proverbial "box" never felt so good.

“P.M. to the A.M.” was so successful that Paul'Michael has scouted out a brand new, origi - IndyMojo.com

Bio

Born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1982 Terrell Porter better known as Jaecyn Bayne spent his childhood infatuated with Hip-Hop. From the sounds of Rakim, Jay-Z, Lauren Hill and more, as a teenager Bayne had no idea how the sounds of his favorite artists would provide the passion he holds so dear today in the design and craft of his own music. Moving to Indianapolis, IN at the age of 15 Bayne continued to build his repertoire of musical favorites while truly embracing everything Hip-Hop culture had to offer. It wasn’t until several years later where Terrell Porter decided to embrace his love for the music and culture and become the artist the world now knows as Jaecyn Bayne.

Fast forward to the year 2012 where Jaecyn Bayne has risen through the ranks of local new guy to famed and herald nationally known emcee. Bayne’s talent on the mic was easily apparent to all the right people who lent their assistance along the way which led to Bayne uniting with a team of producers and emcee’s known as Concrete Beats. Even as a new head on the scene recording his first tunes, Bayne’s prowess was strong enough to command stages alongside the likes of Too-Short, Mobb Deep, Lil Jon, Raekwon + Ghostface, Wiz Khalifa, Planet Asia, and more as Bayne’s buzz for his live stage show and vivid wordplay quickly became a hot topic of discussion in Indianapolis.

In 2008, Jaecyn’s music and presence in the city caught the attention of another Artist and A&R known as M-Eighty who had recently moved back to Indianapolis from the Bay Area. Jaecyn and M-Eighty instantly clicked and M-Eighty was very anxious to add Jaecyn’s talents to his A&R roster consisting of Wu-Tang, Canibus, Redman, Keith Murray, Planet Asia, and more. Jaecyn got his 1st big national break in 2009 appearing on Canibus’ “Melatonin Magik” album which debuted at #94 on the Billboard Hip-Hop & R&B Top 200 charts. That appearance would also earn Bayne a spot of Canibus’ 25 city 2009 United States tour where Jaecyn would finally have the opportunity to display his talents to a much broader and critical audience.

Audiences throughout the United States accepted Bayne as one of Hip-Hop’s burgeoning new talents and praised him for his lyricism, storytelling abilities, and humble personality. Critics have compared him to such emerging talents as Kendrick Lamar, Curren$y, Fashawn, and Phonte (Little Brother / Foreign Exchange) as Bayne continues to navigate his own lane in Hip-Hop. In 2010, Bayne hooked up with a famed Jazz group “The Headhunters” of former Herbie Hancock fame and was personally selected to appear on the group’s first single titled “Funk Wit Us (D-Funk)” featuring Snoop Dogg, George Clinton, & Killah Priest (Wu-Tang). Impressed by Bayne’s content, delivery and charisma, The Headhunters featured Jaecyn prominently on their album “Platinum”. The album was given top honors by Jazz and Progressive music enthusiasts alike as one of the finest contemporary releases of 2011.

Bayne’s vocal appearances alongside Canibus and the Headhunters coupled with his new found love for the open road and live showmanship and the growing popularity of a free weekly freestyle series Bayne started in the name “Audio Therapy” all played a part in his 2011 signing to Owl Studios / Allegro Distribution. After a year of more press, more shows, and non-stop album construction, Jaecyn Bayne’s National Debut “Audio Therapy: The Album” is slated for an April 24, 2012 release. The album boasts an all-star line-up of features and producers including Styles P, Fred the Godson, Canibus,Keith Murray, Street Runner, Bronze Nazareth, MIZBEATS, J. French, and more.
