"Finger Pickin Good"

"He'll be a part of what is getting to be a popular event for the local high school musical talent, The Java Jam...His succcess has been proven by past events where betwen 500 and 800 teens showed up to dance and listen to music created by their classmate...He's excited to try out new original tunes on a crowd of his peers."

Bio

The members of Jae Stevens Live trace their roots to the neighboring Detroit suburbs of Troy and Birmingham. The pieces, however, did not come together until the fall of 2004 when Jae Stevens and Anders Nilsson came together for a small performance in their University of Michigan fraternity. Jason Lurie and Al Huang soon joined the two to complete the group.

At the age of 16, Stevens’ early infatuation with music finally got him to pick up a guitar. He was immediately hooked, and began writing songs, modeling them after artists like Howie Day and Sting. After only a year on the instrument, he had taken second place at a local ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition with his unreleased tracks, “Monkey Love,” “Bone,” and “Morning Light.”

Anders Nilsson and Jason Lurie have been playing together since they became friends in middle school, with frequent support from Alex Huang on an array of instruments. The Troy group played talent shows and local teen events throughout high school, performing most often under the name: Tested 3 Times. The band underwent many changes in the 8 years of its existence and dabbled in such genres as: alternative, ska, punk, rock, jam band, and classic rock. The group was temporarily disbanded as college placed Nilsson in Ann Arbor, MI and Lurie in Philadelphia, PA for a year. However, once back in Michigan, Lurie was drawn in by Nilsson to record for a few of Stevens’ demos to add a new dimension. The three were successful and decided to start a band. Of course, no band is complete without a bassist, and Huang was the natural choice to fill these shoes. And behold, it was a Festivus Miracle!!!

Of course, with four members come four different musical styles/tastes. This diversity aids the writing process and the eclecticism that results is amazingly coherent. Thereby each member’s contributions can be heard ranging from Nilsson’s love for classic guitar solos, Stevens’ indie enthusiasm, Huang’s extensive musical training, and Lurie’s self-proclaimed jazz/rock/fusion style. The final product is a totally original sound based on influences from Maroon 5, Gavin Degraw, Jimmy Eat World, Jimmy Hendrix, Coldplay and Guster, to name a few.

A typical Jae Stevens Live concert is anything but. Mixing in with their original pieces a variety of cover songs ranging from the Goo Goo Dolls to Coldplay, the audience can always be seen singing, shouting, and even dancing along. The abrasiveness of Steven’s wide-ranged voice is stylistically, yet often unexpectedly complemented by the untamed, classic rock-reminiscent guitar solos of Nilsson.

Though just one year in the running, the band has opened for the likes of Matt Wertz, Jesse Payne, and Greenstreet, yet they are also a consistent headliner at local venues in Ann Arbor. Their accomplishments stretch further than their college campus however, as three of their songs: “Don’t Even Know Me,” “For a Beat,” and “Fine Go” were recently featured at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, MI. The band’s music will also soon be available on iTunes.

JSL is currently planning it’s first East Coast tour (and first inter-state concerts) in the Spring, and are gearing to play in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. The latest collection of recordings can be found on the Studio 6 EP, recorded and produced through May and June of 2005. A select few songs from the EP are featured at www.JaeStevens.com in addition to tracks from an upcoming LP to be finished by mid 2006.
