Bunny moved to Montreal from the Philippines in 1973. By 1980 he had a full case of reggaemylitis and by 1986 found himself doing sound mixing in live and in live studio situations for a virtual who's who in the Montreal Reggae scene from Freddie McGregor and Ras Michael to Culture featuring Joseph Hill. He became a young mentor to the young Mossman and together they co-mixed their first Dub track here. And Bunny also recently co-produce with Lynn Tait and Maytone a project by Albert Adu-fosu, Reggae's biggest Star in Guyana, Africa. THE MESSAGE THE DUB looks forward by respecting the genius of what came before when Reggae was steeped by spirituality and the vision of Rastafaria time when a message in the music far out weighed the desire of fame and fortune. Thus Bunny channels the techniques of the King Tubby and the Scientist on several tracks including "Mystery" and "Pirates in the Vicinity" while Mossman invokes the spirit of Scratch (Lee Perry) upsetting V.U. meters on "Freedom Dub" and "Mr. Wicked Man." Jah Children are rebels with a cause. In the true tradition of reggae music, the Children fight against oppression, exploitation and prejudice while keeping a positive outlook on life.
They're a band with a social conscience. They sing about suffering in the streets, racism and the Third World. On stage, they back the fight against crack and cocaine.
"We are prisoners of our own system, we become numbers, codes, figures, statistics which all lead us to mental slavery," says frontman Singer Judah. "We all want our freedom and to get out of Babylon." Judah, like all traditional rastamen, is a philosopher.
To him, the fact that the lottery hands out five million dollars in a 6/49 means that 5 million people spent a dollar on a dream of breaking free of the system.
Although their first jam goes back to 1979, Montreal's veteran reggae band officially started playing together in 1982. Back then they rented halls with local D.J.'s, set up the sound system and put on their own shows. Judah is backed by Keith Reid on bass, Issachar on keyboards and Dan on percussions. All four members are of Rastafarian culture, forwarding the message of Jah Rastafari, the Ethiopian king Haile Selassie I.
The Jah Children constantly use biblical texts and historical references in their lyrics. "We're on a mission to speak the truth, promote equal rights and justice," says Judah. "We must all keep our eyes open to social problems; they endanger peace, love and unity amongst us." One example of biblical and historical connotation is the fact that the rastaman often compares modern western world to the fallen empire of Babylon.
The Jah Children play roots reggae, the musical form that followed the ska and rock steady periods in the late 60s. It's straight from Jamaica's poor and popular class: the roots. It's commercial success grew during reggae's golden period with such artists as Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh.
"Reggae may have exploded in different styles today, with dancehall, ragamuffin and hip-hop says Judah, but it's the roots-reggae that started it all and still holds it together today."
1991 has been a very good year for Jah Children. They toured the western part of the country and shared the spotlight last February at the Rising Sun with renowned roots group Culture and hot reggae-rapper Shabba Ranks.
The Jah Children are very impressive in concert. The strength of the group's performance last week at the Terminal bar relied primarily on the quality of the songs; lyrics, rhythm and social-conscience, all coming across strongly. These fellows are also great musicians and Judah's voice is both agile and intense.
Ibo Zebulan, official Jah Children contributor since 1987, lent his steel pulsing guitar and vocals to the Terminal gig. Ibo is also leader of the Imperial Force reggae band.
Jah Children offered fans mostly original songs such as "Mr. Babylon," "Pirates in the City," and "Life is a Mystery". One of the highlights of the show was a Marley-medley featuring "We and Them," "Guiltiness" and a great version of "Roots, Rock, Reggae" with a solid "dee jay style" rapping by Issachar. Very well done gentlemen.
