"Jaik Miller Band - Next Big Hit?"

Jaik Miller Band - Next Big Hit?

On May 6th, Truth Movement records will release the self titled debut album from Jaik Miller Band. Jaik Miller, the singer, songwriter and namesake of the band has been around the New York music scene since the early 1990’s having fronted Xanax 25 a well known and loved band. Xanax 25 worked with the likes of Warren Haynes, Suzanne Vega & Elijah Allman, all who appeared on now hard to find Xanax 25 albums. Through the years, Jaik has played with countless New York music legends.

That was then, this is now. Jaik has found a great group of musicians to join him, foremost among them JP Bowersock who many of you will know from his long tenure with Ryan Adams & The Cardinals and his work with The Strokes. JP produced the new Jaik Miller Band album and is also a full time member. The other members of the band are; Max Tucker (drums/vocals), Garth MacAleavey (guitar/keyboards/vocals) and Craig Robison (bass).

Jaik Miller Band has been playing shows throughout New York City since their inception in May 2007, consistently honing and fine tuning their sound. They recently started to get recognized by the online music community in Europe having had their new album reviewed by the Rootstime blog out of Belgium March 2008 (note, blog not in English). They were also featured in the March 2008 Dressed Up and Stripped Down Podcast on The Next Big Hit.

This coming Friday, April 11th Jaik Miller Band will be playing songs from their new album at the world famous Bitter End which has been showcasing music in New York City since 1961. Some of the many artists that have graced The Bitter End stage over the years are: Miles Davis, Donny Hathaway, Etta James, Billy Joel, Dr. John and many more. The band hits the stage at 10 PM sharp.

This is a band that has found the right mix of players and the right groove. If you live in the New York City area go see Jaik Miller Band this Friday and hear for yourself what the fuss is all about.

"where are all the may flowers?"

My my miss May, howÕs your first day?

IÕm thinking IÕd like to be groovin. As itÕs said in a Cameron Crowe film - every passing moment is another chance to turn it all around. ThereÕs a lot of truth in that. Last night I got a chance to see a co-writer (Mark Luna) perform at a songwriters night. The added bonus was Rob Giles. IÕve featured him in the past - Boom Bang. MarkÕs voice was in fine form. Having not seen Rob it was a treat. That boy has got some very cool ideas for songs. My favorite of the evening was Blame LA. Absolutely funny and brilliant lyrics.

That was at Cafe Cordial. Another co-writer (Aubrey Richmond) joined me for a while and from there we went to IrelandÕs 32 to see some friends of her playing. In addition there was a band called Bourbon County playing as well. They were the Should I Stay or Should I Go band from last friday on Frost, Heidi and Frank (KLSX 97.1 free FM). I introduced myself to them when they were done so that I could talk to them about featuring them here on Single of the Day.

As I was there I was thinking to myself, itÕs interesting in LA that so much can happen in a single evening and yet so few people were out and about on a wednesday evening. I know I go through bouts where IÕm not pushing myself as hard as I usually do, but are people no longer happy to keep moving?

Which brings me to todayÕs selection. Jaik Miller. DonÕt ask me to pronounce that first name, IÕm not sure what it would be. However, from the moment I heard this song start I was hooked. That guitar riff and the crazy wha effect heÕs got on it was too cool. Along with the bouncy head bobbinÕ groove, it all combines to be seriously cool.

Vocally I was taken back to some things my dad used to play while I was a sprouting boy. IÕm kinda thinking elements of things like Elvis Costello and David Lindley. Of course thereÕs the obvious stuff musically like Bob Marley, but IÕm sure thereÕs a lot more than that. I canÕt quite place my finger on it. Which is a good thing cause that means I can think of Jaik as original in my book.

Besides, who really doesnÕt want to keep moving and who doesnÕt dream? Show me someone who isnÕt dreaming or moving and IÕll show you someone who is dead. You donÕt want to be dead right? ThatÕs what I figured. Go get some life and pick up Jaik. I think itÕs a matter of life or death! - http://www.singleoftheday.com/2008/05/01/

"The NBT Review by Martin Smit"

Jaik Miller Band Jaik Miller Band (Truth Movement)

Something about this release makes me think of vinyl, American new wave mixed with the grit and glory of a country rock free at last from the self-pity and the tears. This new recording recalls the ghosts of the first two Tom Petty releases and almost famous and always cool artists like John Hiatt and Graeme Parker.

There is a timeless and easy grin feel to this, no airbrushing the anger and the heartbreak, butÉ that grin, that energy, never falters.

4447 is pure single, a song the listener knows and loves from the first rolling verse, sliding easily into the air and waiting for national fame when the band (WILL) eventually play Austin City Limits. (not being of the US of A, i have no idea if that show is still going but oh i hope so).

That is not to say there is no darkness on the edge of MillerÕs town, many of the tunes come weary from the fight (Furthermore) and ready to brawl ( Social Disease) and in ÔAfter Last CallÕ you can feel the heaviness of the night and the stories of the bar as clearly as any Waits ballad.

There are no clever, Ôoh look at meÕ, twirls in this, but every instrument including Jaik MillerÕs spine tingling vocals recall the very best of Vic Chesnutt and the subtle playing of the DBs.

Bio

Guitarist and songwriter/singer Jaik Miller has been a major presence in New York’s rock scene since the 90’s. His "wusscore" band XANAX 25 played with everyone from Son Volt and Me'Shell Nd'geocello to King Crimson and Dave Matthews Band. Jaik has written with Warren Haynes, Barry Reynolds, Oliver Ray [Patti Smith Band], Elijah Blue Allman's DEADSY and Sabina Sciubba [Brazilian Girls];

The JAIK MILLER BAND (JMB) has had several incarnations. Originally called TRUStY they played their first show at the NOLA Jazz and Heritage Festival in the spring of 2005. The TRUStY shows put "Multimedia Visionary Folk" on the map, attracting the attention of artists such as Alex Grey and Luke Brown.

In fall 2005 TRUStY did a short demo with Playmakers' Matt Stein (featuring guest appearances by Jonah Smith, JP Bowersock, Meghan Andrews and RAQ's Todd Stoops) and were quickly welcomed into the JamBand scene sweeping North America, appearing at such notable events as the Family Dog tribute to Chet Helms in Golden Gate Park and AT40 (a part of the 2005 Vegoose festival in Las Vegas Nevada. ) TRUStY appeared on the USA network's MONK program in summer of 2006 and won a sponsorship from New England's award winning STONE COAST BREWING COMPANY, becoming the poster children for the SCBC's 420 IPA....upon going national, they learned of another band called Trusty rather than endure a protracted legal fight they wore the short-lived moniker "Yama Bandit", playing at the world famous CBGB in the final weeks before it's closing.

After the most recent (and final) name change The Jaik Miller Band is now: Jaik (gtr/vox), Max Tucker (drums/vox), Garth MacAleavey (gtr/keys/vox) and new guitarist Bowersock (Bay Area superstar and longtime MacAleavey colleague Brian Murphey (bass). Never has there been such a a group of individuals that behaved so well as a single organism..... it was time for JAIK MILLER BAND to start paying their dues

In the winter of 2006-07 the JMB boys went to the Carriage House Studios in Stamford CT (the spot where records such as Pixies' "Doolittle" and Deftones' "Saturday Night Wrist" were made, as well as countless hit records by Diana Ross and Meatloaf among many other notable artists) with JP Bowersock (Strokes' "guru" and guitar player for Ryan Adams) in the producer chair. the album was recorded in an ol'skool rock 'n' roll style; many of the songs were captured live in the studio; "Furthermore" (a song Jaik attributes to the spirit of his friend and fellow songsmith, the late Chris Whitley) was recorded in mono, giving it an authentically gritty feel. the album is laced with unabashed homages to the boys' musical influences; from the pop-punk energy of "social disease" and "anything you don't want" to the psychedelic twang of "Orange Sunshine" which sounds like a lost track from the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" sessions; from the Marley-esque "keep movin" to the straight ahead rock and roll of "4447" and "another good look"....the album's closer, a stripped-down take on their live powerhouse "There's a Whole World On Fire" has recently been included on "The Dream Is Valid"; Zaadz Visionary Music compilation volume one.

Of JMB , Bowersock has said, "The band is talented, tight and able to walk the line between a rock band and a jam band in a way few are able to." the album was mixed by super genius android (and folk city alum) Mark Dann and is peppered with performances by Dann (upright bass) Uncle Earl's Kristen Andreassen (harmonica) and the vocals of rising star Meghan Andrews.

JMB has jammed with members of Robert Randolph's Family Band, AC/DC , John Entwistle Band, Uncle Earl, RAQ, Blues Traveler, The Mammals and Los Amigos Invisibles . They have appeared with Fishbone, Tim Reynolds, Adam Dietch Project, Suzanne Vega, Murphy's Law, Richie Havens, DJ Logic, Sad Red, Eenor, Jazz Mandolin Project, David Gans, Eric McFadden Trio, Bassnectar vs. Kang, The Mutaytor, Ike Willis' Project/Object, Hunt Club, TRiM, Donna Jean, Easy Dub Allstars, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Vinyl, Bernie Worrell, Novillero, DJs Haj and Mikio (founders of Sub Swara and Freek Factory), Jen Durkin's Bomb Squad, Rahzel of The Roots, Strangefolk, Spin Doctors' Chris Barron and M1 (Dead Presidents) to name a few.
