Biography

"...this kid has some serious talent waiting to be discovered." - ONErpm.com

"If he isnt searching for records in junk shops or yard sales he's probably writing 'em" .. Although he is a young, up-and-coming singer-songwriter, Jake Klar sings and writes with an old soul.
Based out of Northampton, MA, he released his debut EP in April 2012, even though he had already been playing around the country for some years, particularly in the northeast and Texas. He was a finalist at the 2012 CT Folk Festival Songwriting Competition and has supported acts like Iris Dement, Poor Old Shine, and Toby Walker.

As a performer Jake is natural, genuine and commanding on stage, common responses from audiences are “powerful” and “moving”. As a songwriter and musician he has been influenced by everything, however Folk, Country, Americana, Blues, R&B, Soul and Roots music are the strongest influences. To pick a few artists from his well of learning - Roscoe Holcomb, Townes Van Zandt, R.L. Burnside, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Roger Miller.

"Jake Klar is a young, unsigned singer songwriter/Americana artist... His music is a deceptively simple blend of finger picked guitar and wistful vocals, which is occasionally punctuated by a desperate rasp. Fans of The Tallest Man on Earth, Joe Pug and Bob Dylan are guaranteed find something they like here. If this debut is anything to go by then he could be mentioned alongside such acts... in the near future" - Wake The Deaf (music blog)

Where I'll be Tonight

Written By: Jake Klar

I'm going out before the sun starts settin'
I'll be comin' back when it rise
And I'll walk these crooked streets til I'm forgotten
Thinkin' about the one I left behind

For I'll be dreamin' all the while she's still sleepin'
Layin' still in your mornin' bed
Then when I walk in and see you softly breathin'
On you'll turn your head and say "come on in"

[CH]
The winter winds are stinging lonesome
I'm walkin' the streets tryin' to show no pain
And where I'll be tonight there ain't no mistakin'
For I'll be knockin' at your door again

I passed a window but I could not see no reflection
I saw a sign on the street but I could not read what it said
I found a picture beneath my feet that reminded
Me of you who's layin' in bed

When the air of the evenin' stops its freezin'
And you can tell that the day is comin' soon
Like when the first mornin' birds start rustlin'
Singin' "where is my true love today"

[CH]
The winter winds are stinging lonesome
I'm walkin' the streets tryin' to show no pain
And where I'll be tonight there ain't no mistakin'
For I'll be knockin' at your door again

Bring Flowers to My Grave

Written By: Jake Klar

If I were in some dark hollow
If I were in some dark place
If never morning but always midnight
Id say "Mary please sing again"

If black water gathered round me
If green grass turned to snow
If a cold wind blew about me
Id say "Mary comes my time to go"

Well the bottle only ends in sorrow
The blade only yields pain
The barrel only sings of murder
And this war only brought shame

So Mary come lay beside me
When the doves begin to fly
Bring me three red red roses
And wont you lay them upon my grave

Devil's Bread

Written By: Jake Klar

Mornin' in the valley, down in the desert the wind shifts
Men millin' the dust, saddlin' up their horses
Prophets wakin' coughin' slippin' outta their beds
The demons and the damned, stubbin' out their last cigarettes

Jesus heals the sick man
Trouble don't turn her head
Nobody sings when the song is over
Passed down the table the devil's bread

Caught between the word and the world
Caught between the duty and the deed
The bowed figure on heaven's highway
Growin' the greed out of the seed

Jesus heals the sick man
Trouble don't turn her head
Nobody sings when the song is over
Passed down the table the devil's bread

A boy walks thru heaven
But thinks that it's hell
Throws his grace and his joy
To watch them fall down the wishing well
And all the while the world's burning
A dollar at a time
A dollar at a time
A dollar at a time

Jesus heals the sick man
Trouble don't turn her head
Nobody sings when the song is over
Passed down the table the devil's bread

Trying tired and trying torn
Another baby's bein' born
Another back bent by
Years of carrying their own stone

Jesus heals the sick man
Trouble don't turn her head
Nobody sings when the song is over
Passed down the table the devil's bread

Can't Help Thinkin' it Was Easy

Written By: Jake Klar

Can't help thinkin' it was easy
Knowing what I know now
When I was sitting in front of the TV
And baby cookin' dinner in her morning gown

And there were the kids under the boardwalk
Stealin' sips of wine and drags of cigarettes
Saying "I don't know where we're going
But boy if we keep movin' we're bound to be the best"

It ain't always easy to get away from it all
But I ain't ashamed of trying somehow
Though that don't change
I'd thought Id be a better man by now

Now I'm watching the road flyin' under the wheels
And I'll daydream the next hundred miles
Rolling out with the night, the hills
And the eastern pines

There ain't a star over my head
And I'm still surprised I've made it this far
And the lights of the town up ahead
Weigh heavy on this lonely heart

It ain't always easy to get away from it all
But I ain't ashamed of trying somehow
Though that don't change
I'd thought Id be a better man by now

I remember when we were young
the way she used to laugh at all my silly jokes
But now no matter how hard I try
She still stays up late and cries
And there's nothing I can do
There's nothing I can do
There's nothing I can do
But watch the changing in her eyes

But I still catch myself wondering
Where she might be tonight
And I'd be a fool to think I'm changing
When there ain't anyone I'd rather kiss tonight
