Bio

Jacob Rathbun grew up in Mystic, CT. He started playing trumpet and piano while he was in middle school. Under the direction of James F. Hilbie he quickly advanced and started taking private lessons. He studied under his mentor, Jose Cordero. Throughout his early studies he continued to grow as a musician and as a jazz player. Throughout his middle and high school careers he would occasionally sub in with the local big bands for experience and the fun of it. James Hilbie once said, "He just loves to soak up the knowledge, especially when it comes to jazz". But it was the influence of his Chet Baker cd collection that pulled him to the small group jazz. While he was in high school, Jake started to attend the New England Conservatory jazz prep program to even further his knowledge in the jazz world. While there he studied under the likes of: Peter Kenagy a local boston trumpet player, Dave Zoffer the director of the program and a guitarist/pianist, Adam Larrabe and many many more. All of this eventually prepared him to move on and after his senior year of high school he began attending the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is still currently studying there preparing for his final semester next fall. While at U of I he has been studying under Tito Carrillo, Chip McNeil, Chip Stevens and many many more. While there he started taking vocal lessons and now has ten performing regularly singing as well as playing trumpet. After school he intends on performing whenever and wherever he can. "One of the better soloists I know..." Ben Ford. One of his future goals is to compile a record of most if not all of Chet Bakers solos and create a transcription book. Chet Baker always has been his biggest idol and he plans on creating a concert tour based on the music of Mr. Baker.
