Bio

Born Dominique Jalayna Johnson, Female rapper-songwriter Jalayna hails from Staten Island, NY.

Raised in a devout Christian household, Jalayna was not allowed to listen to rap music. She learned the lyrics to hip hop greats Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, and The Wu-Tang Clan thanks to her teenage neighbor who blasted his music every day after school. By the age of 10, Jalayna was a fan of conscious hip hop artists like Common and Tupac. She learned to write wholeheartedly and honestly from Eminem and Lauryn Hill.

Jalayna started writing poetry at the age of eight. When she was 15, she was one of five winners of the First Annual New York Knicks Poetry Slam. Winners received $1,000 from L.L. Cool J, which was the most money Jalayna had ever seen at once! The winners filmed a commercial for The New York Knicks entitled "One City, One New York," in which all poets performed an original piece about their own borough (Jalayna representing Staten Island). She was also a finalist in the 2005 McDonald's Gospelfest: Aretha Franklin - Back to Her Roots.

After high school, Jalayna took a hiatus from writing and performing spoken word, and studied acting and communications at Northwestern University. During her junior year, she secretly wrote R&B and rap songs. After receiving her degree, she decided to seriously pursue her music career.

Jalayna's style can best be described as "new skool, with an ol'skool flow." With a flow reminiscent of Leaders of the New School, the versatility of Tupac, and the charisma of Kanye West, Jalayna is definitely a voice to be heard. From anti-bullying, to self-esteem, to sex from a womans perspective, her music has a little something for everyone.
