"A Nostalgic Journey With The Tidals"

The Tidals represent a great era of Jamaican music, the group’s first recording “Rebel Nyah” was recorded in the 1 960s, at the same time Bob Marley was recording his first singles “Judge Not” and “One Cup Of Coffee” for Beverly’s Records.
The group recorded their first single “Rebel Nyah” for Phil Pratt a pioneer record producer who along with Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid and Prince Buster laid the foundation for what was to become a vibrant recording industry in Jamaica.
Jamaica gave the world a new sound of which the “Tidals” played an important role along with artistes such as Alton Ellis, Bob Andy, Ken Boothe, The Wailers, Slim Smith and the Skatalites.
There was also the soul-stirring sounds of Rhythm And Blues that featured top acts such as the Drifters, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions along with Jerry Butler and Little Anthony And The Imperials. As entertainers the “Tidals” performed these songs, and over the years have kept alive that renaissance period, when groups singing four part harmonies ruled the air-waves. The Tidals repertoire consists of songs that have become classics, songs such as the Drifters -“On Broadway,” “Via Condios,” “Save The Last Dance For Me” and “True Love” continues to bring audiences to their feet each time they are performed.
The Tidals are members of J.A.V.A.A. an organization that is currently promoting and marketing the pioneers of Jamaican music. The group have themselves given a number of memorable performances at J.A.V.A.A. performing the hits of the Drifters, to tumultuous acclaim, and rave reviews from both the print and electronic media.
The Tidals represents the great eras of Jamaican music of the 1960s,70s and 80s. The group has also captured the sounds and issues of those crucial eras in their music. The Tidals albums includes “Great Days” and their current album “Crucial Tidals,” both albums make strong statements musically, and highlight the skills of this visionary group.
The group is conscious of the many challenges and the high level of competitiveness that prevails in the music industry, both at home and internationally. However, the group’s nostalgic approach in keeping the spotlight on the music of the unforgettable 60s,70s and 80s is to provide the current hype driven generation with guidelines of what great music is all about.
Allow me the privilege to introduce Eupert Reid, Calvin Richards and Winston Cleveland the “Tidals,” an outstanding group that has withstood the test of time, and continues to deliver the hits of yesterday and today with sheer professionalism.

Bio

Michael ‘Jamalya’ Laing, a son of Jamaica, migrated to the United States of America as a teenager. His love for music started long before this journey. His basic training started at Half-Way-Tree Primary School and continued at Kingston College where he interacted with music on a very serious note, He continued his studies in the U. S. A. acquiring a General Equivalency Diploma,(G.E.D.) From the Green Field Community College in Massachuseffs. He then enrolled in the University of Massachuseffs in its Continuing Education Programme in the town of Amhurst, Mass.
There he studied Arts, Management, Political Science, English Literature and Anthropology. After two years at the University Jamalya returned to New York where he continued his studies at The New School of Social Research. There he studied voice, stage appearance, microphone technique, sound engineering and song writing. He studied with the famous voice coach Lou albano, who is popular in the operatic music arena.
He entered the business of music first as a record retailer, Jamalya established a record shop and label called five hearts records. Although Jamalya is a singer and guitarist he prefers to produce other artisfes. His first record release was a co-wriften with producer Clive Hunt entitled ‘Love Is A Message,’ others followed such as ‘Pressure,’ and ‘Satin Soul.’
He has worked with many major artistes, on stage and in the recording studios and is loved by all. Just to name a few: Max Romeo, Gregory lsaacs, Luciano, Ken Boothe, Fab Five, Unique Vision and the list goes on. Operating from the five hearts offices in the Bronx, he produced many Reggae shows throughout the U. S. A. & the Caribbean.
The young singer dreams turned into a nightmare when he was suddenly traumatized by blindness. Jamalya spent six months at the Lincoln Memorial Hospital which tore him apart. He got married and returned to Jamaica in 1990 to recuperate with his lovely wife Denise. Denise an American national helped the singer to regain his confidence quickly, with what seemed to be a new lease on life. Realizing that there was no Arts and culture programme in place for the physically challenged and disadvantaged artistes, he approached the Society for The Blind to fund his album project, but they refused and had to start his own agency, upon the agency’s advice and this resulted in the birth of “The Befta World Foundation, a production company.
He then called upon the assistance of his Alma Mafa, frankly Campbell OD, band leader of the famed Fab 5 and Bertram Johnson, singer/Actor also known as Ras Mandifo. The Kingston College mofto when translated means “The brave may fall but never yield.” “Foils Cadere Cedere Non Potest,” was now a reality. The Befta World Foundation was formed in 1998, and each director as a core function and the steadfast purpose to preserve our music. We also aim to provide scholarship in music for physically challenged and disadvantaged children.
Jamalya and the l’z are as beautiful as they sing. lnequa and Amina Bowman who are a part of Jamalya group are as beautiful as they sing. With the artistic direction of Henry Robinson and Chris Meridith and the production support of Franklyn Campbell, Gregory lsaacs, Luciano, Ken Boot he, Hearts and fire is now a reality which is his debut album and a must purchased for every Reggae lover’s music collection.
To be continued.
