A Prayer in his Songs
By Meenakshi Kumar
A Prayer in his Songs
Sushan James Basnet, a Gospel musician from Nagaland, became the first Indian to win the prestigious International Music and Entertainment Association (IMEA) Award 2014 for his ‘Brand New Day’. The win was a surprise not just for Basnet but for the crowd at the ceremony who knew little about Gospel music from India, and hardly anything about the Northeast. That’s why Basnet has decided to educate people about this genre of music as well as the Northeast. Basnet took refuge in music early on in life. It was actually his circumstance in life that led him to Gospel music. He lost his parents as an infant and was brought up by his grandparents. This loss at an early age led him to turn to music and serve God. He started writing songs at the age of 14, and now dreams of his creations being sung in churches around the world. He speaks to NE Travel and Life about the award and being a Gospel musician.

When and how did you get into Gospel music?

I was very passionate about Gospel music from an early age, and as I received Jesus as my personal Lord and saviour, I started helping our local church by leading Praise and Worship. At the same time, I also started to write songs and compose music.

Was it a conscious decision to become a musician?

Yes, definitely. I felt inside of me that this is what I wanted to spend my life doing.

How does it feel to be the only musician from India to win the prestigious IMEA award? What was it like being there for the ceremony?

I felt very proud representing my country at an international platform and provide a glimpse into our rich culture. The win was not just for me but for my country too.

For me, the whole experience was new. It was the first time that I walked on the red carpet, was interviewed, and won the IMEA award. The performances were amazing and it was such a humbling experience to stand among such talented and accomplished artists from all over the world.

Was the western world surprised by a Christian music artist from India?

Yes, absolutely! In fact, they were so surprised and happy that they wanted to visit India, especially the Northeast.

What inspired you to write ‘Brand New Day’? Tell us a little about the song and how you developed it?

One day when I was praying for inspiration for the title of my album, an elderly lady in my church prophesised. She said: “God told me to tell you that He will give you songs in the night and these will go international”. So one night, at about 2 a.m., as I was praying and seeking His face, suddenly I felt like I was wearing big 3D glasses and words started rolling in front of my eyes. I thought I was dreaming but I realised that I was in my senses. That’s when I remembered the lady’s prophecy. So, I started writing down the lyrics and that’s how ‘Brand New Day’ was born.

Have you had the opportunity to perform elsewhere in India? If so, what has the response been?

Yes. Every time we have had an opportunity to perform, people really liked the music and we received good response from them.

Don’t you think that your genre of music would have a limited reach in India?

Yes, of course. Being a Gospel artist is a bit challenging in our country but my ultimate goal is to be a blessing to as many people as possible through my songs. So, it’s not really a big problem as long as I can be a blessing.

Do you see yourself moving to other genres in the future so as to reach out to a wider audience?

No, I don’t think so, my focus is always my God, and I don’t think I will ever compromise with that.

What is the perception of Northeastern people outside the region and internationally?

Most of the people from other countries (many Indians too) don’t know much about Northeast India so much so that they don’t believe that we are Indians.

What is the kind of music you listen to? Who are your favourite musicians?

I love listening to Gospel music. My favorite musicians are Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman and Phil Wickham.

What are your views on the music scene in the Northeast?

The people of Northeast are big time into music. Not only do they listen to all kinds of music but also play different types of instruments. I would say music runs in our blood.

"Nothing is Impossible"

James Basnet didn’t quite have the childhood he would have hoped for. As a baby, he was abandoned at somebody’s doorstep and he never knew or saw his parents, although a few days later, he was taken in by his maternal grandfather and was later adopted and raised by his aunt. He would only learn later that his parents had separated, and that, sadly, his father also passed away a couple of months after his birth. Given the circumstances, it seems natural that he had a lot of questions in his heart, as he puts it. “I went into the wrong direction and got into drugs and alcohol when I was just about 12 years old”, he confesses. When he reached the prime of his teenage years, he says, “I thought I would commit suicide.” “Then, I was sitting on the roof one night, and I heard a distinct voice…God saying “I love you”, and that changed everything! It was the first time somebody ever told me that”, he testifies even while insisting that it is the sheer love of God that completely transformed his life. And over the years, he has held on to the promise he has received then. That “He is going to give me a song, and the world will be my stage.” James Basnet has not only been singing but also writing English songs for about 10 years now. His first album is called “Brand New Day” and during 2014, he bagged 3 international awards including two of International Music and Entertainment Association (IMEA), Kentucky, and one Akademia Award, Los Angeles. He won the awards for the Best Artist of the Year and the Best Song of the Year respectively. This year, he released a single titled, “Just the way you are.” “I learned that for God to love us, we need not be special. He loves us just the way we are”, he conveys while talking about the song. This song had further been awarded the “Christian/Gospel Song of the Year” by International Music and Entertainment Association (IMEA) this year. Significantly, he was nominated for the first round of the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, 2015 for three of his singles including “Just the way you are (He loves you)”, “Love came down”, and “The Saviour is born.” He shared this privilege with world renowned artists such as Hillsong, Rihanna, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, etc. He has mostly performed as a solo artist, but sometime last year, the James Basnet Band was formed with his wife, Imlinaro Longchar Basnet as the pianist, Kosopong as the lead guitarist, Adarsh Chettri as the drummer and Akum as the bassist currently. James Basnet has done extensive tours in nine states of the United States of America as well as Bhutan and India. As a solo artist, he also shared the stage with an Australian band known as “Planet Shakers” in Dubai during 2013. That he is a self-taught musician speaks volume of his passion for the art. When asked what music means to him, he says, “For me, it is a channel to reach out to this generation. I had been really down in life and I know people who feel down. I want to reach out to them and say that there is someone who’s there for them.” The father of one son, James Basnet (www.sushanjamesbasnet.com) graduated from a Bible School called Domata India, Bangalore in 1999 and has also been a worship leader for 16 years. In the recent past, he has been involved in charity events apart from performing in numerous occasions. The Nagaland based Artist also feels that there is so much talent here. “People don’t realise what they have. This talent can do so much. It’s always good to dream Big. There is nothing impossible if we believe in God”, he affirms while citing Mark 9:23, which says, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” James Basnet has definitely come a long way from where he started. While he was on tour in the US, somebody had unbelievably gifted him a Mercedes. This good fortune took him back to his childhood, which he tenderly recollects, and shares, “I couldn’t afford any toys when I was a small boy. And so, I used to go to the riverside, find rocks which were shaped like cars and draw windows with chalks.” He may not have dreamed to own a Mercedes someday, but his music, which is, manifestly his gift from God, has certainly worked wonders in his life. And as for him, he intends to use it as a calling for the youth. - See more at: http://www.nagalandpost.com/sundaypost/ArticleShow.aspx?sid=UzEwMDAwMDY3MQ%3D%3D#sthash.uFGcfL2R.dpuf - Sunday Post

"Refresh - James Basnet's new album"

AUGUST 16, 2016 • NO COMMENTS •UNCATEGORIZED

IMEA award winner James Basnet is back again. His new album ‘Refresh’ is going to release on 20th August. This talented musician from Nagaland opens up about his new album and how it is going to be different from his earlier work –

You are going to release Refresh soon. How does it feel?

It’s exhilarating. I am so happy about this new album. It’s everything that I hoped it would be.

What will ‘Refresh’ be about?

You know how sometimes, you load a page online and it gets stuck, and you click on the refresh button and it’s all clear. Well, sometimes in life also, we feel stuck and we need a refresh button to clear our head. This album is exactly that. You’re going to be revived and refreshed, listening to the songs.

How will it differ from your earlier work?

Musically, this time, the songs are more upbeat and the tunes will get you up and dancing. The lyrics, as always, are aimed to encourage and uplift your spirit. This time round, I think I had more freedom with the music and together with great musicians, we have mixed great music with simple and honest lyrics to bring you a one-of-a-kind album.

How long did you work on the album?

I have been working on this album for the past two years and it has been tough at times, but completely worth it.

How is the market for gospel music in India?

It’s not as big as the secular market, but I think it’s getting better now with people being more open to give gospel music a try. Now, my music will be available on Hungama, Artist Aloud, Itunes India and international, mix radio, Vodafone rupee 1 store, Wynk music app and Guevara music app. So, I guess the scene is getting better.

What are your fondest musical memories?

When I think of my musical journey so far, nothing can beat the feeling of winning the IMEA award for ‘Brand New Day’ in Kentucky, USA. Also, seeing my name together with artists like Chris Tomlin, Hillsong musicians, Taylor Swift, Adele, etc in the ballot of the 58th Grammy Awards was kind of a huge satisfaction. It still feels like a dream. I am just really thankful to God for bringing me so far.

As for the ‘Refresh’ journey, my band and I have had some fun memories in the studio, but I think it was a great feeling when we finally finished with the mixing, mastering and we all put our arms up and shouted ‘YEAH!’ in unison. I am blessed to work with a wonderful team, they are really a class apart.
