"James Jernigan / These Days"

I've just received copies of the 1st LP release of James Jernigan entitled “These Days”. Since I've written & recorded with Mr. Jernigan, I feel my views & insights on the songs of this LP are an honest & insightful opinion (I know the high quality of song writing that James is capable of). That brings us to our 1st song,
Plight of the Social Graces. An excellent song & great start for the LP. It brings to mind Elvis Costello in the Girl Happy era. Although I think the chorus vocals are a little over distorted, this is one of the strongest and best written tracks on the LP. Scale of 1 to 10...9. Track 2, London Rain, This song is Top Notch ! I love this song ! Best on the LP. Vocals, instruments, everything is as it should be.  It should be noted at this time that Mr. Jernigan does all instruments as well all production & recording. Well done! 1 to 10 91/2   Which bring us to Track 3, Love You Lover. This is what we would call a filler song, a B side. Something to put between Track 2 & 4. All albums have 'em. Makes the good songs sound better. 1 to 10...2.  End of part 1 of 4 part review. More to come.  John Gasperik, owner of Shakerag Music Store. shakeragmusic.com

Track 4, I Really Don't Know. This song is a toe tapper, a very good song. It’s not pretentious or overstated. This is pure Jernigan! The way I like it. It would have sounded great with a horn section. 1 to 10 81/2
Track 5, This World, This is a very good tune that brings to mind a George Harrisonish song (Somewhere In England). Although I take this song a little personal. I would love to travel, but when you own your on business it's hard to get away. Maybe it's a presumption to think he's speaking to me, F... It, it's my review! 1 to 10  8.
-Track 6, This song sounds a little too much like Julian Lennon to me. A little dated, but still a fair offering. The fadeout is a little long, 1 to 10   6       End of pt. 2  to be continued...................--

Review Pt.3
Track 7, Not So Sure. This is an interesting song, The song itself is a very good tune. It's the structure I have a problem  with. It seems the second break in the song in the song is a little too long. It makes the song seem a little disjointed. I've listen to this more than others & I'm still Not So Sure. Am I being too judgemental? You decide. 1 to 10 8

-Track 8, Flowing Wells. This is the song I have issues with. I like part of the song, but it gets a little to close to Lennon for me ( Gimme Some Truth & Isolation). Sorry James. 1 to 10  7.

Track 8, On Pelton. How could I not dig this song? It's about us! It’s true, we weren't very good. It starts with lines from James' first song "If it's Love" & a song we both wrote " Dreary Haze". A walk down memory lane. A good song even if you weren't there. 1 to 10  81/2   More to come.

Bio

He was born in 1956 and grew up a child of the 60's listening to everything. Absorbing it all. He was a quiet child that did not get into too much trouble most of the time. He started playing guitar around the age of 10. He would rather listen to records or play his guitar rather than be outside participating in common sport, especially football, which he hates.

He has been hearing songs in his head all of his life. He writes them down on scraps of paper and often misplaces them.

In 1965 he managed to convince his mother to purchase a copy of "I Feel Fine". He took it home and wore it out. Watching the orange and yellow swirls go 'round and 'round. Recently he said "I still smell the aroma of felt being warmed by unseen tubes when I hear that song. I practically dug a groove all the way to "She's A Woman" I listened to it so many times".

He sat in the shadows spellbound watching Elvis Presley stroll back and forth on the stage one night. "He was like a god or something. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. Never has any man had such presence on stage before or since."

He does not want to be on American idol. He loves to fish. He is at an age where he only cares about the important things. He hates pretension. He is a trained photographer and graphic artist. He loves to travel and see the world. He loves Hawaii and plans to move there after he gets rich and famous.

He intends to present his art to the world on his own terms.
