BandPopSinger/Songwriter

26 year-old James Marshall is a handsome and gifted singer/songwriter/guitarist in the mold of James Blunt. He writes addictively catchy three-minute pop/rock songs and croons them with a rasp reminiscent of Bryan Adams. His “Beautiful” was a minor hit on Chicago radio. Primed for a breakthrough

Biography

The 26-year-old performer has a new album, We Are The Dreamers, that’s the product of a year of songwriting and inspired performances by his band. “It’s a combination of acoustic ballads, mid-tempo Oasis-type tunes and a few great rockers,” says James, “and delivers the message of hope through tough times.” His fans can’t get enough and are making the CD a hot-selling item at his shows.

Add lots of Chicago airplay for his songs “Beautiful” and “I Can See a Liar,” and a loyal following in premier Windy City rock venues, and there is no question that James is poised to springboard to a national level.

What’s life like for a singer/songwriter watching his listener base explode? “My everyday life is like...that of a Rock God,” quips James. “But seriously, I write a lot, whenever it comes to me. My approach to the songwriting process is rather organic. It just kind of comes out of me.”

Marshall's love for songwriting has been years in the making. As a child, he knew he was going to be a performer — not at all surprising when you consider his artistic pedigree. A native Chicagoan and member of an Irish-American family, he was surrounded by relatives with musical talent. Learning guitar and writing songs came naturally.

“I knew very early on that music and melody were in my blood. I just followed that impulse.”

His other musical family — the performers and music with which he surrounded himself as he found his own voice — include The Beatles, U2, Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher, John Hyatt, Elvis Costello, the Gin Blossoms, and many more. “They’re all people who know melody and songwriting.”

James carried his passion for guitar and songwriting with him to the University of Illinois, built a loyal following in clubs and coffeehouses, and then returned to Chicago intent on making music a career.

After settling on the right combination of musicians, James cut a couple EPs that grabbed the attention of music fans and critics, and soon was playing shows at landmark clubs like the Elbo Room and the Beat Kitchen, and as the house band at U.S. Beer Company. High-profile performances at benefit concerts and rock showcases helped to bring his soulful rasp and catchy rock/pop style to thousands of new fans, and he credits these club and concert performances with making him a performer and “more than just another guy with a guitar.”

Today, James has an air of confidence about his art and clear sense of the music he and the band create. “We sound like the Goo Goo Dolls,” he says. “Three-minute radio friendly pop/rock. Good songwriting for a good audience. This album is really a quantum leap for me, as well as my band. Every song is solid and worthy of being on the disc and goes down really well live.” And he’s equally confident about what comes next.

Lyrics

Beautiful

Written By: James Marshall

Somewhere in the world
Someone's got it all
and saying
it's alright
Somewhere in the world
Someone's all alone
She's saying
it's all wrong

So let it fade away
'cause i know it's okay
and someday they'll see
there's more to life
than there appears to be

You're beautiful
oh yeah you're everything
your beautiful
oh yeah you're beautiful to me

There's A Sign

Written By: James Marshall

THERE’S A SIGN
Verse1:
There’s a sign in the window and it shows which way the wind blows
All you want all you need all you like

And there’s a feeling all around me and in fact it permeates me
All you want all you got is a lie

Verse2:
And there’s a guy who says to me hey man, I’m doin’ everything I can you know that the World is killing me

And there’s as girl high above me and I’d die to make her love me
And I know with just a chance I’ll make her see

Pre-chorus:
I’m gonna be someone and I’ll fly until I hit the sun
And I’ll give it all I got to give today…

Chorus:
Me and you, we’ll find a way, I promise you
All that we need right now is just a little love.

Verse 3:
At night she wonders where it all went wrong, wonders where the feeling’s gone
She knows that the flood is coming soon

And then he holds her tight and says “hang on, baby, this is when we must be strong
You know what we got will see us through”.

Verse 1:
Hey sweet Annie I’m still on your side/when everything is said and done;
I dream of days when off we’ll ride/into the setting sun.

Verse 2:
Hey sweet Annie you’re all that I have/you’re all that makes me a wealthy man;
Touch my face and tell me you believe/I’m doing all I can.

Verse 3:
Hey sweet Annie the sunshine’s always free/no need to dwell on yesterday;
They say Heaven’s a cottage by the sea/we’re finding out someday.

Bridge:
But I don’t know where we will go/and I don’t know what we’ll do;
But springtime’s here and I’m alive/and I’m waiting here for you.

Give me something new someone just like you
You’re everything they want to be…

Anything that floats into your pretty mind
And anything at all, burn your bridges break your fall
Anything that floats into your pretty mind

Verse 1:
And everyday you think
why can’t it go my way

And all you do is try
but it’s always yesterday

But baby I don’t know
How it’s gonna go

Just as long as you hold on tight and do what you do
to make it through the night

Lonely Eyes, the loneliest eyes
I’ve ever seen
you remind me of something
I saw in a dream

Verse 2:
Now deep inside know
there’s better way to go

There’s a life you want to lead
where you can find the piece you need

Lose Yourself

Verse 1:

There’s nothing too special about my side of town

The buildings are old and they’re crumbling down

So come by and get me we’ll go anywhere

Top down, singing and we’re walking on air.

Pre-CH:

Man we’re a big disgrace//when we gonna find our place

Can they let me be, let me be…

CH:

So loose yourself in your rock ‘n’ roll tonight, oh yeah, oh yeah,

oh yeah…

Verse 2:

We’re young and we’re broke and not the fabulous few

It’s not what I call living, it’s just something we do

So come around and talk a while and make me believe

That yeah someday we can fly away and find dream we can keep.
