Bio
James is a singer/songwriter from Winston Salem, North Carolina. He has been playing guitar since he was the age of 12. James stated that his older brother John Mitchell, who also plays guitar, was the reason he started playing guitar in the first place. "It's all about wanting to be like your big brother," says James. “My brother had a Gibson ES-335, and I would sneak into his room and play his axe when he was out of the house.” His grandfather, the late Rev. Rayford James, was also a guitar picker and a Baptist preacher who led his congregation in song with an acoustic flat top guitar. “Grandpa and I would spend hours singing and playing old time country gospel tunes. It was a great time in my life and I miss those good ole days with Grandpa,” says James.
James has written gospel, folk and country songs and James says “Gospel music is where my heart is, even though I like all kinds of music, I'm country and I couldn’t change that if I tried, so I just sing what comes natural to me.” James has also stated that his guitar playing has been greatly influenced by Doc Watson who is also from North Carolina. His writing influences come from singer/songwriters like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and James Taylor.
