Bio
James started playing in 2005, taking beginning piano courses at Diablo Valley College. As both a student and a fan, he listened to all types of music, and many different pianists, but it was when he first heard Bill Evans that he got into jazz. From that point on, he has worked very hard as a self-taught musician.
Over the past year he has studied both classical and jazz theory on his own, including ear training, composition, rhythmic displacement, reharmonization and voicing techniques. With the knowledge he has gained, he applies a combination of inventive harmonic structures and rhythmic expressiveness to his interpretations and original compositions.
James was born in San Pablo, CA. and he is a current student at Diablo Valley College where he has taken several classes in the Music Industry Studies program, and received a Recording Arts Certificate of Completion. He is now beginning to record his compositions, some of which can be heard on DVC’s Internet radio station, KDVC.org.
