Bio

James Potts’ musical interests and style have traveled a long road that ultimately led him to Christian music. James would never have imagined that he would use his faith as inspiration and be leading worship when he first picked up the guitar as a teenager. His musical influences were completely secular and rooted in hard rock. During college, James drifted away from his Christian upbringing and disconnected from the church. He always claimed to be a believer, but did not walk in his faith until he met his future wife Sharon. She motivated James to reconnect, which opened the doors spiritually and musically for James.

James’ style can be simply defined as “rock”. His early influences have clearly carried over into his song writing, but James has developed a style of his own thanks to the acoustic guitar. “I have always claimed to be an electric guitar guy, but the truth is I’m more comfortable behind my Taylor. I have written almost every one of my songs with an acoustic guitar.” The combination allows for a dynamic and contrasting sound that moves with the emotions of each song.

In 2009, James released his first full length solo CD entitled “Measuring the Sky.” The title was drawn from a line in one of his songs, “Greatest One”, and signifies one of James’ struggles with faith and how he has overcome it. “I am a technically minded person and try to place everything neatly into a box. We are all born into a world of measurements. From life itself to the size of our world, science teaches us that everything can be defined and measured. However, God does not fit into this mold and I am reminded every time I look into the sky how amazing and immeasurable He is.” In addition to the powerful songs of praise, James included several personal songs on the album. “’Love of a Lifetime’ was written about my wife for our wedding. She heard the song for the first time during our first dance and it will always be a reminder of that wonderful day. ‘Beautiful’ was written just after my daughter was born. It is a testament to the powerful emotions of having a child, but also how incredible God’s love is for us.”

To support his CD release, James formed a band of friends and began playing various festivals and events. Unintentionally, the group was dubbed the James Potts Band by one promoter in some advertising for a festival. The name was carried through to additional shows and has since stuck with the group.

The James Potts Band has already shared the stage with some great Christian artists, including Warren Barfield, inStereo and Blessid Union of Souls, and is looking forward to continuing to book shows in support of the CD.
