"First Summer Showcase - Review"

First up was JAM REID. A young guy with a wirey tall frame full of enthusiasm with an almost banshee rebellious tone to his own material. On his own with an acoustic guitar, ‘Way Back Forward’ stood out as one of his stronger songs. Even allowing for the string breaks and the continuous slightly flat guitar, the audience cheered him on. The title of his song, ‘Just Be Brave’ was a good way of summing up his performance. - Chris Lemon

"Jamie Reid Talks"

Can you tell us a bit about your music and your influences?

Music and Influences- I’ve been compared with having similar playing styles to the Libertines and the View, both of which I am a fan of. The American band Brand New has also played a big influence to me in the way I write and think about music.

Where are you at with your EP, how do you think it has evolved and are you pleased with the end result?

My Ep- I have recorded a live demo of my “Persevere” EP in the aims of getting gigs and promotions. I havent released my EP as I have found through performing the songs live repeatedly I am getting a more profound sound with every gig. I am also currently working on new material and have hopes of having an album sized amount of my own material by the end of the year.

There seems to be an awful lot of movement in the music scene in Caithness, can you tell us about the advantages and challenges of being an emerging talent in the area?

Being From Caithness and trying to make my career lift off is hard work, there is a lot of great local talent and not a lot of venues or masses of local interest in the live music scene. I’ve only played once in my hometown of Wick and I doubt I’ll be able to get any more for a long time- Its easier to get gigs and promotion 110 miles away in Inverness. You really have to just keep trying and hope for a break eventually.

You have a busy summer coming up can you tell us about what your most looking forward to?

I a mostly looking forward to opening the HEN Free Range Folk Stage at Belladrum this year, Friday at 12:00

Also planning on playing the Ironworks Summer Showcase on the 14th July with Fallen Riot and PAWS, and I am planning on playing the Thurso Newmarket Bar on the 23rd of August.

If people have not heard of you, what song would you recommend they listen to and why?

Depending on taste for those who have not heard me before there’s the soft songs like “For You” but for those who like music with a kick to it I would recommend “Episode”.

You can see a bit more of Jam on his facebook page and of course the aforementioned gigs.

"The Leonard Jones Potential Review"

Jam Reid has been gigging hard recently, having played Edinburgh and Forres in the past couple of days. He certainly did not look gig tired, far from it, Jam’s repetoire of songs was a mix of covers but mostly his own material that appeared intimate and personal. He took time to describe one of his older songs that had recently been resurrected, the chorus of which bore a little resemblance to the chorus of The Killers’ “Mr Brightside”.

Jam is one of a few younger male talents in the area that primarily play solo (Toby Michaels and the artist formerly known as Graham Brown come to mind with the likes of Iain McLaughlin and James Mackenzie occasionally playing on their own).In Jam’s music there is a nice combination of honesty and the vulnerability of youth (as proven – if proof were needed – with the set list being retained on his mobile phone), that makes you want to hear more. His EP is currently available “it’s proper printed and proper good” - Chris Lemon

"Promise On The Bill"

Winning one man and guitar formula. Angsty lyrics had you wanting to hear more - and get ahold of a lyric sheet, as sometimes the passion in the singing made the words hard to make out. - Margaret Chrystall

Bio

I am 19 years old and I'm at the very first steps of becoming an acoustic singer/songwriter. Originally from Wick I have now moved to Aberdeen to support my musical career and I have been seeking out and taking advantage of any opportunities given all over Scotland. I have been playing live on various radios, been eatured on various newpapers and played in many different venues from the very North of Scotland right down to Glasgow and Edinburgh. My determination and passion drives me forword and as most of my gigs are self funded I have been set apart from most other musicians my age as every spare penny I have is set to hopping on busses to play gigs all over the country in aid of my career.
