"Note to Self"

Note to Self
By FRANK GALE

STEPHENVILLE - Well-known local performer Jamie Walsh is ready to release his first CD.

Walsh’s first recording, entitled Note to Self, features 10 original songs of the rock/pop genre.

Walsh, 29, has been playing music since he was 14, and just last year started pursuing his own music. He was a featured artist at the East Coast Music Awards this year in Charlottetown, P.E.I. and played two showcases for Music Newfoundland and Labrador and another for Sennheiser Canada, who are the world leader in consumer and professional audio systems.

“This was a wonderful experience as I learned a lot there, especially the fact there is so much more to having a music career than just playing the music. You have to get into distribution, getting your music played on the radio, setting up a website so people are able to access your music, bookings and so on,” he said.

Walsh said there were a lot of seminars at the ECMAs with industry professionals and he took in as many of those as time would allow.

He’s now looking forward to Music Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual awards taking place right here in his hometown of Stephenville from Nov. 3-5 this year.

Prior to working on his CD, Walsh played regular gigs in Stephenville at locations like the Holiday Inn, CC’s Pub and Grub and Clancy’s, and different festivals. But he spent most of last year preparing for this CD.

Walsh said his hope is to at least break even on the CD and looks at it as a step towards getting a second CD produced as he furthers along in his musical career.

A release party for Walsh’s Note to Self is taking place starting at 10 p.m. on Saturday at Clancy’s Pub in Stephenville and Walsh is inviting people to drop by.

In addition to Walsh performing songs from his CD - which include titles such as This, Do Your Remember, Fragile, Are You Ready and Note to Self - the evening will feature Three of a Kind and other musicians. A highlight will be a big jam for fun at the end of the night.

Walsh expressed appreciation to those who helped him produce the CD, including Leon Aucoin on bass; Kevin MacNeil on drums; Rick Walsh, his dad, on keyboards; Stan Gallant on lead guitar; and Kevin Carey on saxophone. Walsh handled vocals and acoustic guitar himself.

The CD was recorded at Mall Czar Productions in Stephenville. - www.thewesternstar.com

"Enjoying the opportunity"

HEADLINE: Enjoying the opportunity

Amidst this scene of countless acclaimed artists,
outrageous fashions and wacky hairstyles, Jamie Walsh
looked more like the boy next door than a musician.

The clean-cut, slender 29-year-old is just a regular guy
from Stephenville excited to be at the 2006 East Coast
Music Awards in Charlottetown.

But give him a guitar and let him sing, and it's apparent
there's nothing average about him.

That's why this virtual unknown guitar-playing
singer/songwriter was chosen to play at the ECMA's
pre-awards show performances.

In fact, of the many acts selected to perform at the
province's music suite at the Delta Hotel over the last four
days, Walsh was the only one without an album.

"I was pretty excited about it. It's a great opportunity," Walsh
said Monday afternoon as he prepared to go to a workshop
with world- renowned performance trainer Tom Jackson.

"To be among all these well-established artists, like Ron
Hynes, is a real honour. I'm really thankful Denis Parker
gave me this chance."

Parker, Music Newfoundland and Labrador's executive
director, recognized substance in Walsh.

"I saw him at the club in Stephenville a while back and I just
thought he showed tremendous talent," Parker said.

"Jamie is one of our rising talents in the province and he's
showing considerable potential to go farther, and we're
committed to helping him at every opportunity."

Like most musicians, Walsh began playing rock cover
tunes at school functions as a teenager and then
performed at clubs around Stephenville. While he's been
writing songs for years, he's most proud of his work in the
past few years.

"When I started writing good songs, that's when things
started going for me," said Walsh, who learned piano at
age six and taught himself to play guitar.

Purchasing a good guitar - a Gibson J-45, "the same as
Ron Hynes," - helped the creative process.

"It was worth every penny," said Walsh, who took out the
guitar to demonstrate his talents.

Walsh's career really got rolling when he got in contact with
Jack McIsaac - owner of a All the Way Music Publishing, a
company is Stephenville - who helped point him in the right
direction organizing his work, promoting it and developing
a website.

Walsh will release his debut CD, Note to Self, in June and
plans a release party in St. John's in July. McIsaac is the
album's executive producer.

"I chose Note to Self because I think that when people write
songs, no matter what the actual words are, it's always
about them, whether it's about something that happened to
them or the way they feel about something," said Walsh,
whose first single from the album will be My Own Way.

And if he had any doubts he has what it takes to make it in
the business, they should have been put to rest after his
visit to Charlottetown. He's drawn compliments from fans,
artists and industry people alike.

"It's really encouraging and it gives you more confidence,"
said Walsh, who would like to earn a spot in the Sneak
Peek Rising Stars Showcase next year.

"Because you're putting yourself out there - so to hear all
these compliments from all these record people, it's great.

"This is what I've wanted to do since I was a kid, and with
so much excellent music coming out of Newfoundland, it's
just really inspiring.

"I want to go all the way with this."

Bio

All The Way Music Publishing is proud to announce June 14th, 2006 as the release date of singer/songwriter Jamie Walsh’s debut CD Note to Self.

“We all love a great story of how a star is born,” says Michael McIsaac president of All The Way Music, “and we’ve found us a star.”

He is speaking of Stephenville’s Jamie Walsh. Having grown up in a musical family, Walsh found that singing and playing came to him instinctively at five years old. When
He started classical piano and voice training at the age of nine, he knew he’d found his calling.

Since adding guitar to his roster of talents at the age of fourteen, Walsh has played at benefits, fund raisers and talents shows, wowing audiences with his vocal sensitivity and guitar prowess. At age sixteen he began playing professionally with local bands and as a solo performer.

A variety of inspirations have shaped Walsh’s music. He studied Jazz at St. Francis Xavier and attributes much of the artistic influence on the album to his work with the seasoned and accomplished musicians in his group West Coast Blues – all of whom accompany Walsh on the album.

The release is momentous for Walsh, not only as his debut album, but as a project very close to his heart – the studio where the album was engineered and produced is owned and operated by his long time friend and musical collaborator Stan Gallant.

Walsh’s music is best described as an eclectic blend of many styles that have come together to create a tour de force. There are elements of blues, rock and pop with a unique combination of Jamie’s melodies and vocals.
