"Jam Theory a study in music improv"

The following in an excerpt from a cover story in the Pulse entertainment section of the Las Cruces Sun-News published 9-18-08

"Formed in June of this year as a result of a late night jam session, Jam Theory's goal is to play music through pure improvisation. Three months later, this unique, progressive band out of Las Cruces is making improv an art, and unlike most bands rehearsing is out of the question.
The Band members do not "pre-write" or rehearse the songs they play live, so each show is a one-of-a-kind experience. All of it's recordings have been done in concert or during "practice".
Three months have proved enough for Jam Theory to become a cohesive band . . ." - Las Cruces Sun-News Pulse

Bio

Jam Theory was formed in early June of 2008 after a late night jam session by brothers Ben and Jesse Gutierrez, and long time friend and guitarist Joel Martinez. They wanted to create a band that relied strictly on pure improvisation. They didn't know if it would work or if they would fall flat on their faces but they recorded a quick demo and with that quickly booked their first gig. After an amazing first gig they knew they were onto something new, different and exciting. The next gig would bring something new to the plate, second guitarist Mike Ramos had joined the band the night before and keeping to pure imoprov played the show the next night.

In September Joel would leave the group to return to Boston, MA where he had just graduated from Berkley College of Music in the spring. Just before his departure, Rick Luna on auxiliary percussion would join and complete the lineup. Now being the Jam Theory that exists today they continued to push forward and develop as a group.

October would see the self release of the groups first CD "InconFormation" an all instrumental collection of songs from the first 4 months of the bands existence. Not easily categorized or thrown into any genre "InconFormation" represents the formation of the group and their desire not to conform to any preconceptions of what they should be.

In November Jam Theory competed in the "Battle of The Bonez 5" the areas longest running all originals only battle of the bands held in the neighboring city of El Paso, TX. The judging was based on originality, musicianship, stage presence and crowd reaction. Out of the 25 bands that competed Jam Theory took 2nd place overall, not bad for a mostly instrumental improv band that had only been together 6 months! In January Jam Theory was picked as one of 2 local bands to be featured in the editors choice "What to watch for in '09" by the Pulse Entertainment guide. It's clear that Jam Theory is making noise around the local region and they don't intend on stopping!

Their music is not bound by any particular genres and flows seamlessly between many, from jazz all the way to metal, nothing is held back. Check out their myspace page for a taste of their unique flavor of music!! www.myspace.com/jamtheorymusic
