SoloFolkAmericana

Guitar-based narratives on the beauty and little truths of everyday life, in a genre I call "urban campfire cabaret". Songwriting style is literary yet down-to-earth. Warm alto vocals graced with cool falsetto.

Biography

Jane Godfrey grew up in a large family of musicians and artists in St. Louis.  She began singing harmonies with her eight siblings at an early age, and picked up the guitar when she was eleven. It wasn't until a couple of decades later when, in search of creative fulfillment, she discovered her passion for songwriting; thus prompting road trips to Nashville where her songwriting skills were nurtured through workshops and performing at writers showcases, including the infamous Bluebird Cafe. Jane Godfrey writes songs which honor the ordinary and reveal the beauty and little truths in everyday life.  In a genre she calls “urban campfire cabaret”, her songs showcase strong melodies and an eclectic mix of folk, blues, jazz, and beyond.  Jane possesses both a poetic sensibility, influenced by literary songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin, and, drawing inspiration from John Prine and Steve Goodman; a knack for storytelling with a subtle sense of humor. With songs both personal and universal, Jane moves her audiences and draws them in to share her intimate virtual campfire circle.

Lyrics

Donuts and Daydreams

Written By: Jane Godfrey

JUDY WORE HER AUBURN HAIR TEASED IN A TALL BEEHIVE
SHE'D BEEN WEARING IT LIKE THIS SINCE 1965
SAME YEAR SHE LOST HER FOLKS, IT WAS A HIT AND RUN
JUDY GOT THE DONUT SHOP, BECAME HER BROTHER'S GUARDIAN
NOT EXACTLY WHAT SHE'D PLANNED ON TURNING TWENTY-ONE
SHE WOULD CLOSE HER EYES AND FLY A MILLION MILES AWAY

CHORUS 1
SHE HAD DONUTS AND DAYDREAMS BY THE BAKER'S DOZEN
SHE WISHED HER LIFE COULD BE SOMETHING THAT IT WASN'T
DAY IN DAY OUT FATIGUE AND REGRET
STUCK TO HER SKIN LIKE SUGAR AND SWEAT

JUDY SHOVED A TRAY OF LONG JOHNS ON THE BOTTOM SHELF
POURED A FOLGERS FOR HER BROTHER, ANOTHER FOR HERSELF
SHE KNEW EDDIE SPIKED HIS COFFEE FROM A BOTTLE HE KEPT HID
IT BROKE HER HEART TO THINK ABOUT WHEN HE WAS JUST A KID
SHE COULDN'T CHANGE HIS DRINKING WAYS NO MATTER WHAT SHE DID
BUT SHE COULD CLOSE HER EYES AND FLY A MILLION MILES AWAY

CHORUS 2
SHE HAD DONUTS AND DAYDREAMS BY THE BAKER'S DOZEN
SHE WISHED HER LIFE COULD BE SOMETHING THAT IT WASN'T
JUDY KNEW THE ACHE IN HER HEART
WAS TELLING HER SHE WAS CRUMBLING APART

EDDIE FLIPPED THE MIXER SWITCH AND STARED INTO THE BATTER
JUDY'S NOTE WAS ON THE COUNTER WHERE THE GREASE HAD SPLATTERED
SHE'D SAID I'M SORRY ED, I'LL BE GONE FOR A LONG WHILE
I'VE REALIZED I NEARLY HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO SMILE
P. S. NOW I'M SEEING THINGS IN A WHOLE NEW HAIRSTYLE
SHE USED TO CLOSE HER EYES AND FLY A MILLION MILES AWAY

CHORUS 3
SHE HAD DONUTS AND DAYDREAMS BY THE BAKER'S DOZEN
SHE WISHED HER LIFE COULD BE SOMETHING THAT IT WASN'T
A WISH FOR EVERY DONUT SHE'D FRIED
JUDY LEFT TO FILL THE HOLE INSIDE

TAG
A WISH FOR EVERY DONUT SHE'D FRIED
JUDY LEFT TO FILL THE HOLE INSIDE

The Old Rag Doll Waltz

Written By: Jane Godfrey

VERSE 1
MANTLE CLOCK CHIMED IN THREE-QUARTER TIME
I CLIMBED ON YOUR SHOES, DAD, YOUR DANCE STEPS WERE MINE
WE SWAYED TO THE BEAT, I WAS SWEPT OFF MY FEET
IN THE OLD RAG DOLL WALTZ EVERY DANCE WAS DIVINE

CHORUS
ONE TWO THREE, ONE TWO THREE, DANCING ON AIR
YOU TAUGHT EACH STEP TO ME LEADING WITH CARE
THEN YOU KISSED ME AND SENT ME OFF INTO THE WORLD
BUT IN THE OLD RAG DOLL WALTZ I WAS JUST DADDY'S GIRL

VERSE 2
RADIO DIAL IS TUNED TO YOUR SMILE
I STILL FEEL YOU GUIDE ME ACROSS THE FLOOR TILE
I LIVE EVERY DAY BY THE LESSONS YOU GAVE
IN THE OLD RAG DOLL WALTZ YOU WERE MINE FOR AWHILE

CHORUS

BRIDGE
WHEN I HEAR THE MUSIC PLAY, WELL
I FEEL SO SAFE AND SOUND
WHILE YOU'RE DANCING WITH THE ANGELS
I'LL KEEP MY FEET ON THE GROUND
'TIL WE MEET ON HIGH
IN THE SWEET BY AND BY

CHORUS

TAG
STILL YOUR WALTZING RAG DOLL GIRL

Stuff

Written By: Jane Godfrey/Melanie Johnson

I SHOVED MY ARM INSIDE THE BOX OF FROSTED LUCKY CHARMS
YELLOW MOONS AND PINK HEARTS SPILLING
I WAS A JUNIOR CONSUMER COLLECTING ALL SEVEN
GOING FOR THE PRIZE WAS THRILLING
TV COMMERCIALS MADE AN IMPRESSION
IT WAS POSESSION OBSESSION
I HAD YO YO'S, DOMINOES, HI HO CHERRY O
ROLLER SKATES, AN EASY BAKE, BARBIE CHRONIC-BAD-HAIR-DAY
SLINKY SLINKING OFF THE SHELF, GUMBY TWISTED ROUND HIMSELF
I COULDN'T GET ENOUGH
I WAS CRAZY ABOUT HAVING
STUFF...STUFF, STUFF, STUFF, STUFF
STUFF...CRAZY ABOUT THAT STUFF

I STARED AT MY FOUR REMOTES AND WONDERED WHEN I LOST CONTROL
I JUST KEPT ACCUMULATIN’
I TRIED HARD TO HIDE MY SINS IN RUBBERMAID STORAGE BINS
HAUNTING ME FROM THE BASEMENT
THEY LINED THE WALLS LIKE LITTLE COFFINS
I WAS SCARED TO CLEAN TOO OFTEN
I HAD A TREADMILL, CORDLESS DRILL, 2 OR 3 GEORGE FORMAN GRILLS
A FONDUE POT, CUISENART, A BATTERY-POWERED SINGING TROUT
BOOKS ON HOW TO ORGANIZE, A MASTER MEANT TO THIN MY THIGHS
I NEEDED ALL THIS TO FUNCTION
I WAS DYING OF CONSUMPTION (FROM ALL THIS)
STUFF...STUFF, STUFF, STUFF, STUFF
STUFF...CRAZY FROM ALL THIS STUFF

BRIDGE
I THOUGHT, I'LL THROW IT OUT OR BLOW IT UP OR GIVE IT TO GOODWILL
I'VE GOT SO MUCH JUNK I COULD START MY OWN LANDFILL

I SHOVED THE LAST BAG OF TRASH INTO THE OVERFLOWING DUMPSTER
I CAN'T BELIEVE I DID IT
NOW THE ONLY THING I OWN IS MY FORD EXPLORER
TO ALL THE REST I SAY GOOD RIDDANCE
I'M TAKING A ROAD TRIP TO FREEDOM....BUT WAIT
THERE ARE A FEW THINGS I MIGHT BE NEEDIN'
A ROAD MAP...OH YEAH, SOME CAR SNACKS...
I GOTTA HAVE MY CRACKER JACKS
A FIRST AID KIT, I NEED SOME CHAPSTICK
OH, AIR SUPPLY'S GREATEST HITS
CHEWING GUM, MILK DUDS, TRAVEL MUG, DRIVING GLOVES
A COOLER FULL OF DIET COKE, SUNGLASSES LIKE JACKIE O'S
A HANGING CAR AIR FRESHENER, A HEATED CUSHION FOR MY REAR
OH, THIS IS GONNA BE TOUGH
I JUST CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT MY
STUFF...STUFF, STUFF, STUFF, STUFF
STUFF...STUFF, STUFF, STUFF, STUFF
STUFF...I'VE GOT TO HAVE MY STUFF

Though I Lay My Paddle Down

Written By: Jane Godfrey

OF THIS LAND, WE'RE SONS AND DAUGHTERS
PRECIOUS FLOW'RS OF MOTHER EARTH
WE ARE CREATURES BORN OF WOODS AND WATERS
AND IN DEATH WE SHALL NOT THIRST

chorus
THOUGH I LAY MY PADDLE DOWN
I AM CALLED TO TRAVEL ON
MY SOUL WILL FILL WITH BLISS AS I RISE UP WITH THE MIST
AND DRIFT AWAY, DRIFT AWAY, DRIFT AWAY

OF DEAR FRIENDS, I'VE KNOWN NO SHORTAGE
MY FAMILY'S LOVE HAS BEEN MY STEADY OAR
WITH THE BURDON SHARED TO EASE THE PORTAGE
I HAVE REACHED THE SWEETEST SHORE

chorus

WHEN MY TIME HAS COME FOR LEAVIN'
PLACE A WREATH UPON MY BOW
TAKE MY HEART AND HANDS I WILL NOT NEED THEM
WHEN I LAY MY PADDLE DOWN

Chorus

Dancing With the Northern Lights

Written By: Jane Godfrey

YOU KNOW YOU'LL HAVE THOSE KIND OF DAYS
WHERE YOU'LL WANT TO PULL YOUR KNEES UP TO YOUR CHIN
AND I KNOW IT'S HARD TO KEEP THE FAITH
WITH THE STATE THE WORLD IS IN
YOU MAY FEEL LIKE GIVING UP
WHAT YOU DO MAY SEEM TRIVIAL
BUT IT'S NOT, IT'S JUST SMALL
THE WAY ALL LIFE BEGINS (SO)

CHORUS
TAKE MY HAND
WE WILL WALK THROUGH THE WILDERNESS
THE LAKE AND LAND
TAKE OUR HEARTS WHERE THE HEALING IS
AND LIKE THE COLORS OF HOPE SHINING IN THE DARK OF NIGHT
WE'LL BE DANCING WITH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

I HOPE YOU'LL WATCH FOR LOVE AND JOY
‘CAUSE LITTLE MIRACLES ARE HAPPENING EVERY DAY
AND IF YOU WANT PEACE THEN MAKE SOME NOISE
KEEP A QUIET PLACE TO PRAY
’CAUSE IF YOU LISTEN YOU'LL HEAR IT
THE VOICE OF THE GREAT SPIRIT
IT SURROUNDS YOU IN A CIRCLE
OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY (SINGING...)

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE
FEET FLY OVER THE EARTH
SKY IS FLASHING, WE ARE LAUGHING
AND OUR HEARTS LEAP WITH EACH SWEET NEW BIRTH (IF YOU...)

REPEAT CHORUS

TAG
AND WHILE THE COLORS OF HOPE STILL SHINE AGAINST THE DARKEST NIGHT
WE'LL BE DANCING WITH THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

Finally Loving Myself

Written By: Jane Godfrey

I USED TO RUN IN SO MANY DIRECTIONS
STILL I WAS STUCK THERE IN MY RUT
I WAS SO ASHAMED OF MY IMPERFECTIONS
WHAT I DID NEVER SEEMED TO BE ENOUGH
THEN I HEARD A GOD BREEZE BLOWING
FELT A GENTLE PEACE WITHIN
I LET GO OF THE FEARS I’D BEEN HOLDING
AND I SAILED UP WITH THE WIND

CHORUS
I'M FINALLY LOVING MYSELF
AND IT'S TIME I BELIEVE IN MYSELF
ALL THE CHAOS AND CLUTTER THAT ONCE GROUNDED ME
SURE LOOKS SMALLER FROM UP HERE WHERE I'M FLYING FREE
NOW THAT I'M FINALLY LOVING MYSELF

I HAD TO LEARN TO BE FORGIVING
WITH EVERY TASK I UNDERTOOK
BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING SO FULFILLING
WHEN I LEARNED TO LET MYSELF OFF THE HOOK
NOW THERE'S A PROMISE I AM KEEPING
THOUGH MY VIEW MAY NOT BE CLEAR
WELL WHAT'S A LITTLE FAITH WITHOUT THE LEAPING
I WILL FIND MY WAY FROM HERE

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE
ARE YOU READY TO FLY
YOU CAN FINALLY LOVE YOURSELF, FINALLY LOVE YOURSELF TOO
THEN YOU’LL SING

REPEAT CHORUS

I Want More

Written By: Jane Godfrey

I WANT MORE
Jane Godfrey

LATELY I'VE BEEN CAUGHT UP IN A SITUATION
IT STARTS WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH MY DOOR
WELL I'LL CUT TO THE CHASE, WHEN I SEE YOUR FACE
OH BABE I WANT MORE

THE CLOSER YOU GET THE STRONGER THE SENSATION
I GEAR UP FOR THIS FEELING DEEP IN MY CORE
BUT ONE TOUCH OF YOUR HAND, OH I NEED A BACK-UP PLAN
OH MAN I WANT MORE

I'VE NEVER BEEN GOOD AT COCKTAIL CONVERSATION
SMALLTALK I USUALLY CHOOSE TO IGNORE
BUT YOU WHISPER INTO MY EAR, HONEY IT'S LOUD AND CLEAR
OH DEAR I WANT MORE

Instrumental bridge

I'VE NEVER BEEN GOOD AT COCKTAIL CONVERSATION
SMALLTALK I USUALLY CHOOSE TO IGNORE
BUT YOU WHISPER INTO MY EAR, HONEY IT'S LOUD AND CLEAR
OH DEAR I WANT MORE

IS THIS A GIFT FROM HEAVEN OR MY DAMNATION
I THINK YOU KNOW THE PATH I’M HEADED FOR
WELL BLESSING OR CURSE, THINGS COULD BE WORSE
OH, OH I WANT
OH I WANT MORE

WISH I WERE A COWGIRL

Written By: Jane Godfrey

WISH I WERE A COWGIRL

IN THE BREAKING OF THE DAY ON A CLEAR SEPTEMBER MORN
CAMPING IN THE FOOTHILLS OF OURAY - HEY
I SWING ONTO MY HORSE, GRABBING ON THE SADDLE HORN
RIDING WEST WITH THE REINS IN MY HAND
MOVING ON STIRRING UP CLOUDS OF SAND

HEADING ON TO TELLURIDE AT A ROLLING RIVER’S EDGE
SCENT OF SAGE BLOWING THROUGH MY HAIR - THERE
ACROSS THE SAN MIGUEL UNDERNEATH A CRAGGY LEDGE
WAS A MUSTANG A JEWEL OF THE WEST
ONE NO COWBOY OR GIRL COULD POSSESS

CHORUS
I WISH I WERE A COWGIRL
I WOULD MAKE MY ROPE TWIRL
SHOWING OFF FOR YOU - YOU
YOU COULD BE MY COWBOY
AND IF YOU ARE A GOOD BOY
I'LL SHARE MY LASOO
EARLY MORNING HIT THE TRAIL
SIDE BY SIDE AND TAIL BY TAIL

I SET ACROSS THAT RIVER BRACED AGAINST MY STEED
GAINING ON THAT GOLDEN ZEPHYR NOW - HOW
I LOVE THE RUSH OF LANDSCAPE A'BLURRING WITH MY SPEED
I SWING MY ROPE HIGH IN THE AIR
IT LANDS 'ROUND THE HEAD OF THAT MARE

REPEAT CHORUS

BRIDGE
YI-YIPPEE-I-AYE
THAT'S WHAT THE COWGIRLS SAY
YI-YIPPEE-I-AYE
I'D SAY IT EVERYDAY
I'D WEAR MY TEN-GALLON HAT
AND BOOTS AND VEST
THE COWS WOULD BY IMPRESSED

IT'S TUG-OF-WAR FOR HOURS UNTIL THE CRIMSON SKIES
TURN DAYLIGHT INTO DUSK ONCE AGAIN - WHEN
THAT MUSTANG'S FIGHT IS WANING MY HEART LOOKS IN HER EYES
SHE'S MINE FOR THE TAMING I KNOW
I GIVE UP THAT ROPE AND LET HER GO

REPEAT CHORUS

Beautiful Ladies

Written By: Jane Godfrey

BEAUTIFUL LADIES TAKE CARE OF THEIR BABIES
IT’S A NEVER ENDING WORK OF LOVE, THEY GIVE OF THEMSELVES
THEY FINISH THE DISHES, SORT AND FOLD THEIR WISHES
AND PUT 'EM WITH THE LINENS, SHOVING 'EM HIGH UP ON THE SHELVES

CHORUS
ALL THE BEAUTIFUL LADIES GATHER THEIR GRACES
BETWEEN CARPOOL AND GOOD NIGHT MOON
THEN AS TIME BRINGS RELEASES THEY SMOOTH OUT THE CREASES
AND DO WHAT THE BEAUTIFUL LADIES DO

SHE WAS FROM THE OLD SCHOOL, FOLLOWED ALL THE POPE'S RULES
STILL SHE HELD A VISION LIKE A CANDLE IN THE NIGHT
PATIENCE IS THE VIRTUE THAT GOT HER TO MACHU PICCHU
SHE TIED HER SPIRIT TO THE SUN AND HUNG ON TO THE LIGHT

REPEAT CHORUS

I CAN FEEL IT HAPPENING, IT’S JUST LIKE I'VE IMAGINED
WORDS ARE RISING FROM MY OLDER SOUL AND ROLLING OFF MY TONGUE
NOW I’M PUTTING THIS OUT THERE IN A VOICE WE MOTHERS ALL SHARE
AND EVERY NOTE IS SWEETER FOR ALL THE LULLABIES I'VE SUNG

REPEAT CHORUS

VAMP
BEAUTIFUL LADIES…

BLINKED OUR EYES

Written By: Jane Godfrey

REMEMBER THE DAYS
WE WERE COOL WITH OUR WILD SUMMER WAYS
LEAVING DUST CLOUDS ON A DIRT ROAD
SITTING REAL CLOSE CRANKING ROCK AND ROLL
SINGING ALONG
WE DROVE ON

CHORUS
RIDIN' IN YOUR PICK UP TRUCK
WHEN WE WERE TWENTY-ONE
FULL OF DREAMS AND LOVE AND LUCK
ALL REVVED UP AND READY TO RUN
YEAH WE TOOK OFF ONE FINE DAY
AND LANDED A DECADE AWAY
MUST HAVE BLINKED OUR EYES

REMEMBER THE NIGHTS
BABY GIRL KEPT US UP WITH HER CRIES
WE’D GRAB THE CAR SEAT, HIT THE HIGHWAY
FINALLY SHE'D SLEEP TO A FOUR-LANE LULLABYE
HUMMING ALONG
WE DROVE ON

CHORUS

BRIDGE
I TOLD YOU WAY BACK THEN
I’D RIDE WITH YOU TIL THE END
AND SO WE’VE COME A LONG LONG WAY
BUT DON’T YOU LOVE HOW WE’VE GOT MILES TO GO

REPEAT CHORUS

TAG
YEAH WE TOOK OFF ONE FINE DAY
AND LANDED DECADES AWAY
MUST HAVE BLINKED OUR EYES
