"Gateway Music Festival Featured Band Series: The Jane Rose Band"

The folk rock genre is making an attempt at a comeback and few bands are working harder to reproduce that signature sound of a singer/songwriter as Jane Rose. Her music is honest and open with a very candid stage performance. The music is not overpowering as the vocals carry you through the very personal stories from a very talented vocal personality.

Heartbreak is written over many of the songs in the Jane Rose catalog, but there is hardly any moping. The music is written in the style of early classic songwriters like Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell, but with a sound closer to Sheryl Crowe or Alanis Morissette. The sound is fresh and borders on the sound of a female country group, but never loses site of its folk rock core. Drums and bass are held down tight while Jane sings and howls over the music never losing the emotion that first inspired the song to be written.

The band performs well live and it is obvious that these musicians have been on both sides of the media spectrum. Several of the band members are also photographers for various publications and the poses they throw to the cameras make them a photographers dream. The band is hardly arrogant though, as the stage presence represents the music honesty and humility. The Jane Rose Band is the kind of band that you can put in front of a huge crowd; ready to go wild, or a band for your local church picnic.

The studio as been very kind to the Jane Rose Band and it is apparent on their LP, Talk About It. The album is chock full of songs that sound they should have already been written by some classic folk star, but still sound new and exciting. The album sounds fresh off the shelves of a Starbucks feature stand, but it becomes unexpectedly rocky in places that lift the album to a special place in my library. Another studio release may be a while off, but I can not wait to hear more from these folk rockers.

The Jane Rose Band is another band in the trend of playing to younger audiences who will share the album with their parents. The music captures a beautiful moment in each stanza of Jane Roses’ music and that is irresistible to any age group. The band is cheery, but does not ask you to dance. It is pained and edgy, but it does not ask you to cry either. Jane Rose just wants to tell you a story, and her band wants to make her story a little catchier. - Tay Kuy Media
