"4 Musical Acts You Can Find On The Danforth"

Drawing influence from the likes of Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell, and Rufus Wainwright, Janet Whiteway’s sonic palette is an eclectic mix of styles from folk to pop to jazz. Uplifting and optimistic in tone, Janet Whiteway’s music could perhaps be best described as hopeful. (Maya Bajic). - On The Danforth

Bio

If you ever want to test out your self-control, come to a Janet Whiteway gig, and see how long you last before you start singing, or dancing, or both.  At the very least you’ll end up grinning like a cat, because this is the  cream of musical  performance,  which,  when  coupled  with  her delightfully whimsical take on life,  makes her and her band a little  known Toronto delight.

If you haven’t heard her perform Jolene, you’ve only half lived.

But don't let the 'campiness' and fun mislead you: it's not an exaggeration to say that for Janet music is the fulcrum of a life loaded with talent.  Or perhaps burdened - listen to “Autumn” on Pure Sunshine, (her CD) and hear the wrenching honesty of goals partially attained. Or 'Broken Vows', gorgeous and somber, ancient and Irish, but tuned up for our ears.

Her CD- eclectic, soulful, funky - instantly grabs your attention, but rewards careful listening.  Her live performances - the same, flexibility and professionalism, are clearly the basis of her work.

It's tempting not to share, but it wouldn’t be right.

Come. Listen. Watch for yourselves. Dance and sing…for the whole room.

Janet currently plays as a solo (duo/trio) performer as well as with the funk band Grace, the folk/pop duo The Coe Hill Girls and with her tribute bands Elton Jan and Boss Lady.
