"Janine Gobeil has gotten in touch with her inner tween"

Recording in L.A. earlier this month, the 28-year-old Winnipeg vocalist was invited to lend back-up vocals to a track by '80s pop singer Tiffany, who's on the comeback trail after pulling a Debbie Gibson and posing for Playboy.
As it turns out, the first album Gobeil ever purchased was by Tiffany, says Winnipeg producer Rod Hussey, who's quaterbacking Gobeil's forthcoming album with Canadian expat Tim Feehan, a former '80s singer himself. - Winnipeg Free Press

"Won't be the last time you hear Gobeil's name"

Janine Gobeil. This won't be the last time you hear Gobeil's name. With a flair for jazz, cabaret and pop, it's only a matter of time before this local singer-songwriter/pianist is known far and wide. She releases her self-titled debut EP, recorded in L.A. with veterans Alf Catolico and Rod Hussey, tonight.

""best part of Janine Gobeil's website...""

The best part of Janine Gobeil's website has gotta be the HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION section, where she tells of being flown to Los Angeles by her producer and given lodgings by one Chip - of Chip & Pepper fame. When we were young, we basically lived inside the same green-and-black C&P mock-turtleneck for a year, so this is kind of a big deal for us. Also the part about Janine singing for Tiffany, and the ghost of Karen Carpenter haunting the studio where she laid down tracks.

""She's a great singer and songwriter""

"I've said it quite openly that I'm a fan of Janine's and her album is a really great piece of work. And as people get a little taste of her music, you'll find out what talent this woman has. She's a great singer and songwriter"

"Impressive six-song debut EP"

Gobeil might not be a household name in Winnipeg yet, but her impressive six-song debut EP should open many doors for her in the Canadian music industry.

The young singer-songwriter enlists local vets Rod Hussey, Murray Pulver and Alf Catolico as her backing band for her dramatic brand of clever pop which incorporates elements of jazz (OK), cabaret (Quick and Witty) and wistful balladry (Troll).

As a piano-based artist with a powerful voice, comparisons to fellow Canuck songstresses Chantal Kreviazuk and Sarah Slean are a given, but Gobeil is definitely her own woman who shouldn't remain unknown in her city, or the country, for much longer.

"Six-song EP provides a nice introduction to the singer/songwriter and pianist"

Recorded in L.A., Janine Gobeil is a six-song EP that provides a nice introduction to the singer/songwriter and pianist. Gobeil's strength is undoubtedly her voice, which is rich, full and warm, but she also shows a willingness to take a few chances with her melodic pop songs. That's refreshing, and it sets her work apart from the cookie-cutter ballads that fill the airwaves. Even when Gobeil sticks to straight-ahead piano ballads, as on Regrets and Troll, her tremendous voice carries the day. And yes, Doc Walker guitarist Murray Pulver somehow found the time to work on this album, too. That dude gets around. - Uptown Magazine

""...one of Winnipeg's most captivating voices.""

Winnipeg pianist and songwriter Janine Gobeil got her first big break as a back-up singer for Tiffany (of "I Think We're Alone Now" fame) on her comeback record Dust Off and Dance. Gobeil must have had a good experience, because she stayed in L.A. long enough to record this honest, heartfelt six-song debut. With tracks like the catchy opener "Perfect Side of Me," the hopeful "Wander," and the funky-pop of "OK," Gobeil clearly demonstrates her ability to write beautiful piano pop melodies, ideal for light rock or jazz radio stations. While Gobeil doesn't really stretch from these genres, there are two tracks that sound quite different. The sexy, drum heavy "Quick and Witty" is dramatic and instantly reminded me of something Sarah Slean would do. The first single, "Regrets" is a breathtaking ballad that shows off Gobeil's incomparably beautiful voice. As an extra, this CD comes with the "Regrets" video (directed by Winnipeg's Scott Catolico) which complements the song perfectly and made me wonder why MuchMore Music doesn't play more independent music videos (or much music for that matter). While some might find Janine Gobeil a bit too sweet, there's no denying that she possesses one of Winnipeg's most captivating voices.

"A standout disc from 2006"

Just like the song (Track 2), Janine Gobeil is 'quick and witty;' She is also upbeat and confident; all of which permeates her debut disc. All six jazzy pop tunes radiate personality and charm. Guided by highly regarded producer Rod Hussey (Voice of Boom, New Meanies, Greg MacPherson), Gobeil's crisp, clear vocals accentuate the lightness of the music and add a bounce to the beat. A standout disc from 2006.

Bio

There is a certain “classic” feel and sound to Janine’s songs that were unintentional but naturally created. Her words are honest and her ideas are heartfelt. Take a listen, “see” the song and you’ll find yourself cruising care-free down a hot desert highway in a huge convertible or at a drive-through where girls on roller-skates take your order.

In one year, this singing songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba recorded in Los Angeles, shot a video in Victoria, B.C. and wrapped it all up in a six song enhanced CD. Taking a very independent approach, Janine, producer/musicians Rod Hussey (bass) and Alf Catolico (drums/guitar) financed and produced the record themselves. The songs were engineered by Andrew Slade and mixed by Tim Feehan at Backroom Studios in L.A., with Murray Pulver adding some guitars at Monster Music in Winnipeg. The video for “Regrets” was shot over two rainy days in Victoria by Scott Catolico who edited it perfectly, complimenting the subtle flow of the song.

Starting at a very early age, Janine has done voice-overs on Sesame Street, fronted daring rock bands and jazz groups, performed in stage productions and has done an enormous amount of studio work tracking her voice on many recordings for artists across Canada and the U.S. Throughout all of that, Janine wrote down her thoughts and stories and honed her songwriting abilities. She is currently creating more pieces of music for everyone to take home.
