Jan Owen

Jan Owen

BandFolkSinger/Songwriter

Singer/songwriter reminiscent of the great songs of the Beatles and Elvis Costello.

Biography

Jan Owen plays acoustic electric solo, and sounds like 2 or 3 guys when he plays. He is one of the best finger picking guitarists in the world, and probably the only solo player to tackle songs like, "A Day in the Life," which he performed on 92.3 K-Rock in NYC, and his original music reflects that great guitar sound. Valerie Main -- A&R, Sparks Entertainment-- put it best when she said, "Jan and his music ... works great live! It's so reflective of the great 60's and 70's Beatles and Costello era and is 'hooky' and melodic ... Jan's a solid singer!"

Here's what more people are saying about Jan Owen.

"Man, where have you been hiding? Jan, you've got a gift, a real gift!" -- Bruce "Cousin Brucie" Morrow, legendary radio personality; one of the first to play the Beatles songs and Beatles music; introduced the Beatles at Shea Stadium in '65

"You're good! Very good!" -- Sid Bernstein, promoter who brought the Beatles songs and music to the US at Shea Stadium and Carnegie Hall; manager of The Rascals, and many others

"Did I say that? You're more than good. You're incredible!" -- Sid Bernstein, redux

"Gee, you're real good!" -- Ron Howard, director, actor and former resident of Mayberry

"I've never heard a voice like that before . . . Not only does Jan Owen do great covers, but he's an artist in his own right!" -- Jimmy Fink, New York DJ, 107.1 The Peak

"I enjoyed listening to your songs. I didn't know ... that I was talking to such a talented guy!"" -- Pete Best, original Beatles drummer, who still performs the early Beatles songs and Beatles music worldwide

"We'd love to have you play the Cavern for Beatles Week!" -- Bill Heckle, owner and manager of the Cavern Club, Liverpool, England, where the Beatles songs and Beatles music lives on

"You did a great performance! I didn't even know it was you because I was in one of the booths with my back to you and facing the audience. I finally got up to take a look. You had the audience spellbound, and it was great to hear the way you filled in for all the instrumental parts ... particularly 'A Day in the Life,' which may be my favorite Beatles song" -- Black 47 leader, and novelist, Larry Kirwan

"I really enjoyed your show. You nailed those Beatles songs!" -- Bruce Spizer Beatles scholar and author of "The Beatles Are Coming!" and other tomes about the Beatles music and Beatles songs

"Jan, you were the star of the show! You were awesome! I still can't believe you played 'A Day in the Life' on a single guitar! I will definitely be in touch about future events." -- Trina Yannicos, editor, Daytrippin' Magazine

"Jan Owen not only covers the Beatles to perfection, but his own compositions are laced with the greatness that made the Fab Four fab!" -- Pat Matthews, host of the top-rated internet radio station on Live365, Beatles-A-Rama, that plays non-stop Beatles songs and Beatles music

Lyrics

Surprise, Surprise

Written By: Jan Owen

CHORUS 1:
Surprise, Surprise,
What's around the bend?
"You never know - just hang on," says a friend.
But in real life, that's so hard to do,
Or so I said, till I ran into you.

CHORUS 2:
Surprise, Surprise,
What's around the bend?
"Something good -- so hang on," says a friend.
But in real life, that was hard to do,
Or so I said, till I ran into you.

Yesterday was getting up and staring at my face -
Making breakfast for myself in a cold and lonely place.
There was little meaning doing anything alone -
Just a pile of things collected proved that anyone was home.

CHORUS 1
CHORUS 2

[Instrumental Break]

Just a day or two soon after planning my demise,
The magic that my friend had promised, sparkled from your eyes.
And since I had no hope you were more than a dream come true,
And I'm glad I walked around that other bend and into you.

CHORUS 1
CHORUS 2

No One Wants To Be The One To Say The Party's Over

Written By: Jan Owen

When I was young
It was easier to fall in love.
Sleepless nights
And counting all the stars above.
And of all the things at seventeen I've ever done,
Was the time I said that we would be the only ones.

CHORUS:
No one wants to be the one to say the party's over.
No one wants to be the one to end the game.
No one wants to be the one to say that love is dying.
And no one wants to say that things have changed.

Time went by
And painted a picture of laughter and pain -
And memories
I doubt I'll ever see again.
But somewhere along the way love's candle flickered out -
And each of us with nothing left to talk about.

CHORUS

[Instrumental Break]

"I got to leave her,
But I love her so", cried a friend of mine.
"Now I drink too much,
And it's doing something to my mind.
And if I don't go now, I know that one of us will surely die.
But I don't want to be the one to have to say goodbye -
Say goodbye -
I don't want to make her cry."

CHORUS (repeat 2x)

The Healing Kind

Written By: Jan Owen

Your love is a healing kind,
Calling at my door.
Just like you can read my mind,
Knowing I need more.

The way you can see through me,
What is this you do to me?

Your love is a kitten that's
Purring by my side.
I'm feeling your motor run,
Saying "It's alright".

The gentleness so soothes me,
What magic you do to me!

Your love is the puzzle piece,
I could never find.
(But)it's been there in front of me,
How could I've been so blind?

The way you were there for me,
(I)thank God you came back to me.

Your love is a healing kind,
Calling at my door.
Just like you can read my mind,
Knowing I need more.

The way you can see through me,
What magic you do to me!

Your love is the healing kind.

Hey, You!

Written By: Jan Owen

Hey, you!
The one with the freckles on that cute little nose.
Hey, you!
You know that I want you but your mama don't know.

But you,
With them big brown eyes
Can dig down deep in my soul.
You can ask me for the sun,
Ask me the impossible -
You know I'll never say "No."

Hey, you!
You know that you got me there's no reason to fuss.
Hey, you!
You know you can hook me with the proper ambush.

And, you -
With that school girl smile
Makes me feel good down to my toes.
You can ask me for the sun,
Ask me the impossible -
You know, I'll never say "No."

CHORUS:
Hey, you! Hey, you! Hey, you! Hey, you!
You got to listen to me, girl,
Because I'm telling you I love your love -
You know I love your love.

Hey, you!
You deal me a hand, babe, that never can lose.
Hey, you!
You give the kind of love I always can use.

But you,
With them big brown eyes
Can dig down deep in my soul.
You can ask me for the sun,
Ask me the impossible -
You know I'll never say "No."

CHORUS

Hey, you! Hey, you! Hey, you!

Kansas City Reprise

Written By: Jan Owen

You are in Indiana,
I'm to my waist in snow.
We've made our last agreement
To let us know, if we will meet again,
Let it be known, when we will meet again.

I'll sip my Bloody Mary,
You'll wear your purple rose.
We'll meet in Kansas City, baby -
(At our) secret rendezvous, baby -
A city built for two - for you.

...baby, our secret rendezvous,
Baby - a city built for two.

A year or two divides us,
Our paths may never cross.
But with the love inside us, baby -
As friends we'll never die,
But honey, it's time to say goodbye.
Bye-bye.
Bye-bye.

You're So Good For Me

Written By: Jan Owen

I've had hard times, bad times, cryin' times,
And it's been so disturbing.
I've been knocked down, dragged down, beaten down,
Until I've begged for mercy.

But talking to you is so easy -
You always understand, 'cause,

CHORUS:
You're so good for me -
You get me back on my feet again.
You're so good to me -
That leaving you would surely be a sin.
It's like a shot in the arm -
You get me on my feet again.

I've been sold out, conned out, cheated out
Of all the things I've treasured.
I've been led down, held down, beaten down,
In all the plans I've ventured.

But talking to you is so easy -
You always understand, oh, 'cause,

CHORUS
It's like a shot in the arm -
You get me on my feet again.

[Instrumental Break]

CHORUS
It's like a shot in the arm -
You get me on my feet again.
