Bio
My brother was a huge influence on me musically. He is four years older than I am, and when we were young he shared his musical tastes with me. So when most of my friends were singing "Sesame Street", I was singing "Bad, bad Leroy Brown", "Joy to the World (Jeremiah was a Bullfrog), and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". He also had a collection of the Beatles. He had a band early on, and played bass guitar so I went to sleep for years to him practicing "Smoke on the Water". I learned rock and roll songs from him, but my own collection was eclectic -- John Denver, Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, Barry Mannilow... I loved disco music as a teenager.
My country music connection from my Arkansas roots -- my cousin and I used to sing a lot of country music swinging on my grandma's porch swing. Dolly Parton was our favorite "Me and Little Andy", especially. We had a little venue in town (still active for over 20 years with different owners) with The Grapevine Opry originally owned and managed by Chesai Childs and her husband Andy; and Johnny High who left to form his own highly successful show still in operation. Great local talent such as Brad Davis (with his brother and father with a blue grass band) and went to Nashville to play with the Forester Sisters and many others; Lee Ann Rimes (performed with Johnny High); Lee Ann Wommack (also performed with Johnny High's show). Back in the old Opry days, sometimes big name performers dropped in such as Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and more -- Chesai's dressing room was full of pictures of visitors to the Opry. I grew up in Texas, so no matter how hard my folks tried to keep me out of country music, there's no way around it.
