Today’s New Music Of The Day Comes from Australian wunderkid Japanese Wallpaper, who’s premiering his cosmic new hit ‘Cocoon’ with NME. The beautifully subdued ‘Cocoon’ is the follow-up to his stupendous self-titled debut EP, in which several of his tracks have broken the 500k play mark and earned him 27k followers on Soundcloud as a result.
The 18-year-old is yet to play a show outside his native country, but he’s keen to continue working on collaborations with a variety of artists. “Collaborations are half the fun... Working with people you like and respect. Every time I've collaborated with someone, I've learned so much about songwriting,". ‘Cocoon’ though is all Strum and it shows - it's refreshingly honest, endearing and avoids the cliches that beleaguer hopeful artists.
Strum may be ready to keep working with other artists, but ‘Cocoon’ is ample evidence that he’s going to be pretty special on his own, too.

Melbourne-based artist Gab Strum has been making music since the tender and turbulent age of 13. While most teens struggle with the rage and angst building up inside of them, Strum silenced the chaos with ambient electronic medleys that have found their way to major motion picture soundtracks. As Japanese Wallpaper, he is able to connect with people on a more intimate level with music that doesn’t necessarily get you out of your head so much as it temporarily takes your mind elsewhere.
Today, we are premiering the official music video for his latest single, “Cocoon.” The Hamish Mitchell-directed visual contains a montage of serene outdoor scenes. It’s all very lush thanks to overlays of the minimal surroundings, cropped on top of each other. You’ll really come to appreciate the beauty in the ordinary.
“‘Cocoon’ explores the hazy convergence of two almost-aligning perspectives,” says Strum. “We wanted the juxtaposition of different frames within the constantly shifting aspect ratio of the clip to reflect the subtleties of that kind of situation.”
Japanese Wallpaper already released his debut, self-titled EP. More music is on the way, but for now, you can let your mind escape within the video, below. - Nylon
Australian wunderkind Japanese Wallpaper (Gab Strum) crafts shimmering, subdued electronic pop music marked by serene melodies, vibrant synths and spritely extra touches. His latest effort "Cocoon" follows on from his impressive self-titled debut EP, which has racked up over a million streams on SoundCloud and secured a future in music for the obviously talented producer who's only just fresh out of high school.
