"Favourite Hallucination EP"

Colinger, Jared
Favourite Hallucination EP
(2006, Allalom Music)
Rating: 8.2

Indie-pop has yet another free spirited, soulful crooner in Jared Colinger. On his second EP, Colinger writes 6 immediate pop-infused gems. Showing the best of taste, indie icon Frank Lenz assists Colinger with instrumentation, and shares production credits. Lenz has a definite and stable presence on this EP, but quite honestly, Colinger doesn't really need much help. His baritone has crooning flex, just check "Carefree Indifference", but also the indie-charming swagger that pulls off "Favourite Hallucination" like a sugar-pop breeze. Matt Fronke, who has contributed to projects like Charity Empressa and The Lassie Foundation, is featured on many of the EP's tracks. The addition of horns serve the EP well, and Lenz has always had a special talent for arranging orchestral snippets. Stylistically, it's hard not to like Colinger, who always stays safe of the side of hooks and great melodies. But having said that, this EP is not pop-by-the-numbers. There is a certain challenging side to these 6 songs, and Colinger has done well creating captivating pop that doesn't quicklly grow stale.

Bio

Growing up in Tennessee has been a challenge for multi-instrumentalist Jared Colinger, but musicians like Elvis Costello, Squeeze, and Starflyer 59 have helped give him a unique take on both music and life.
Earlier this year Jared had the chance to work with one of his heroes, Frank Lenz (Headphones / Starflyer 59) and out of that time together came the "Favourite Hallucination EP", full of whimsy and indie pop orchestration released August 1st, 2006, on Allalom Music. To support the release Jared made his first trip out west to perform at TOMFest followed by a short California tour.

Coming off of the successful tour Jared went home to write more soul-searching songs about love and life before heading into the studio November 2006 with Jason Martin (Starflyer 59) to record another EP.
