"Jared Scharff- Guitar Hero"

From the “About Me” blurb on Jared Scharff’s MySpace.com page:

Remember the days of analog tape and drummers like Keith Moon? Guitar players like Townshend and Clapton? Singers like Mick Jagger and John Lennon? I’m looking for that.

Remarkable, really—Scharff himself doesn’t remember, because the heyday of ’60s pop preceded his arrival on this planet by a good two decades. By the time Scharff was pedaling a Big Wheel and learning his ABCs, Moon and Lennon were gone, Jagger, Townshend and Clapton had long stopped writing hits and analog had gone the way of the dodo.

Ah, but the spirit of the age is alive and well in Jared Scharff, a blonde, mid-twenty-something New York City singer/songwriter to whom the phrase guitar hero both matters and applies. He’s a Radiohead-era guy with a Cream-era sensibility on a personal crusade to ensure that the concept of the guitar hero marches on. Plenty of online fans and New York City club goers will tell you he’s doing a bang-up job, too.

“I grew up a Beatles-Allman Brothers-Hendrix-Clapton kind of guy,” Scharff said. “Around sixth grade it was all about Metallica, Poison, Ozzy, etc. Then in junior high it was all about Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins. That gave way during high school to the jam band scene, because I loved the guitar playing. Of course, as I grew up, I fell more in love with the power of an amazing song. And that’s where you find me now—trying to write great songs and putting guitar in the forefront as a vehicle for ultimate expression. To me, that’s a winning combination.?
“The way I like to describe it is: If the Who met up with Coldplay, went to a party with Tom Petty and U2, said hello to the Beatles and the Stones, waved to the Police and ended up at the Killers and Bloc Party after party. So it’s all kinds of rock, really. It’s a blend of retro, modern, pop, folk and indie rock, with a big emphasis on the guitar.”

Born in Rockland County, N.Y., Scharff began learning Zeppelin songs and Metallica solos in sixth grade. College found him signed to RCA Records in a band called Carbondale; he left after one album to follow his own muse. He made 2005’s critically acclaimed The Coast EP, writing the songs and playing all the instruments. He has done session work for Columbia, Sony, Elektra and RCA; and has played onstage with Maroon 5, Avril Lavigne and Dave Matthews Band violinist Boyd Tinsley. His music has been heard on MTV shows Punk’d and Undressed, and on the MTV Movie Awards.

He describes himself as “trying to break down doors in the music world with strong guitar heroics and songwriting. I want people to know that I care deeply about music and that I’ve loved, studied and breathed music my whole life. I want them to know that I’m someone to watch out for.”

After The Coast EP, Scharff started doing solo acoustic shows around New York City while assembling a live band. Incendiary sets at clubs like Pianos, the Mercury Lounge and the Knitting Factory earned Scharff and his band a solid following. And since he posted his songs on MySpace.com last October, he now counts more than 3,700 online fans and 13,000 plays.?
He takes the guitar hero thing seriously, and with good reason—he’s a solid writer and a scorching player. “The guitar is key for me,” Scharff said. “I’m making its presence known and unavoidable, and I’m trying to bring the era of Clapton, Hendrix, the Who and Zeppelin back in terms of quality, originality, melody, dynamics and intense guitar playing.”
?Said heroics are usually accomplished on Scharff’s beloved Fender Stratocaster guitar.
?”I love Fender guitars,” he said. “It all goes back to Eric Clapton and Blackie. He was my first guitar idol. When I was ready for a “real” guitar, I got myself a black Strat with a maple neck. I’ve been playing that guitar for about 12 years now! Also, I always loved the sound of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. For some odd reason, even as a young kid, I knew that was the sound I wanted. The Strat fits my personality. The sound, the vibe—I love it. I’m also a huge fan of Fender amps. I love Super Reverbs, Twins, Vibrolux, and my secret weapon—the Vibro Champ. That’s one gnarly amp! I used that a lot on my EP, actually. All my solos are the Strat through the Vibro Champ.”?
Asked who he’d choose if he could’ve been in any band from the ‘60s or ‘70s, Scharff demurred: “To be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t want to be in any of my favorite bands because I love them just the way they are! But I would’ve loved to jam with Clapton with Cream, the Who with all original members, and definitely the Allman Brothers with Warren Haynes and Dickey Betts. That would be insane for me.”?
“But I feel there’s a lot of great music coming out now,” he added. “It’s becoming more about the music again. Less ‘generic’ music is making it onto the airwaves, and it’s making the music world much richer. I applaud that, and I plan to ride that wave and make my contributions as well.”
