"Jarryd Scott @ La Salle Power Co."

The La Salle Power Co. has a rustic industrial feel, retrofitted to resurface as an entertainment megavenue with multi-leveled bars, a restaurant, and live music stage on the top floor. The adaptive reuse parallels the innovative music that was on alive on Saturday night. With progressive reuse ideas comes progressive solutions, an evolution of knowledge, while holding onto an old-fashioned aesthetic.

And so the stage was set for the beginning of the show. Our very own Lindsey Wilson gave tribute to the solo efforts of women singer/songwriters before passing the torch to Jarryd Scott. An up-and-coming singer/songwriter that graduated with a degree in Sound Recording Technology from DePaul, Scott shows an affinity for musical production as he orchestrates his band around his acoustic guitar and alt-country rock vocals. Scott and his band started the show with a tribute to the old school, folk country roots of American songwriting, and later transitioned through the decades to a series of reggae inspired tunes. Both genres are purveyors of story telling, each requiring simplistic musical accompaniment in order to showcase the true talent of lyrical poetry.

An honest observation would be that the band as a whole seemed to be more inclined and comfortable playing the reggae genre. The electric guitar tone definitely was more fit for reggae, but with the right direction could find a talent in the folk country realm. The drummer showed the most diversity of talent, seamlessly transitioning in between genres. Though through it all, the highlight of the show was the ability of the frontman and his accompanying female vocal to create melodies together in a harmonious combination of talent.

Scott’s original “Scars on My Guitar” is probably the truest reflection of his ability to poetically craft a combination of words that create something unique. It’s the story of experiences that have in some way changed the face of an artist. It’s about the fight for an individual identity in an image oriented industry. It’s about finding a true voice for oneself, and it’s about trying new things, while never forgetting where you’ve come from just like a scar reminds your body for good or bad of the actions that brought the tissue to fruition.
