"Singer Universe Best Vocalist of the Month"

Jason Bravo Named January “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With His Song “Lying Under The Moon”

By Dale Kawashima

Jason Bravo, a talented AC/pop vocalist/writer & pianist based in Buffalo, NY, has won the January SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of his song, “Lying Under The Moon.” This song is featured on his 10-song debut CD Between Head And Heart, which he released independently in December 2006.

“Lying Under The Moon” is an elegant, graceful AC ballad, which has a pretty melody, and features an arrangement which builds throughout the song. This cut provides a terrific showcase for Bravo’s vocals, which uniquely recalls Roy Orbison’s pure, fluid style framed in a contemporary classical/pop context a la Josh Groban. Bravo also played piano on this recording, and he expertly produced this cut.

Bravo was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, and he started to sing and play piano at a young age. Bravo was always a big music fan – “I loved reading liner notes and all the credits” – and he was inspired by artists such as George Michael and Mariah Carey, plus songwriters Diane Warren and Walter Afanasieff. During his teenage years, Bravo would play piano recitals, perform in musical theatre productions, and he was also a dancer.

For college, Bravo attended Brandeis University near Boston, MA, where he subsequently graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. One of his highlights at Brandeis was when he composed a new musical called Platterplatinum and performed it onstage. He also developed his pop songwriting skills during this period.

Following college, Bravo lived in New York City for a few years, then moved back to Buffalo, where he continues to work as a professional pianist and as a musical director for local productions. In addition, in 2004 Bravo decided to record his debut solo album. “I had written many songs and done demos, but I felt there needed to be a product – a full CD,” he said.

Bravo’s album Between Head And Heart was recorded over a two-year period, and he released it at the end of 2006. The CD has received good reviews, particularly from internet radio stations such as Radio Crème Brulee in Boston, which has played “Lying Under The Moon” and other cuts from the album.

“I have been promoting my CD and getting the word out,” said Bravo. “My goal is to get a major label deal, and I would love to work with a top producer like Walter Afanasieff.” Bravo is also performing live regularly, with a backup band for larger shows, and playing solo for smaller venues. And notably last summer, he performed in front of 15,000 people when he opened for veteran band Pure Prairie League at the Art Park Amphitheatre near Niagara Falls. - Singer Universe Magazine/Dale Kawashima

"Best of Western New York"

The debut CD from singer songwriter Jason Bravo, Between Head and Heart is a mix of adult contemporary pop and ballads. An extraordinary pianist Bravo performs locally and has served as vocal director for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and has performed in Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. An easy comparison would be to early Elton John pre schmaltz phase but with a stronger Josh Groban delivery. He is assisted here by some of the best musicians in the area including Mark Krurnowski and Cave Wilson from The Filter Kings, guitarists Geno McManus and Mir Ali, bassists Aaron Trubic and Jim Kurzdorfer and percussionists Wendell Rivera and Nick Corallo. Dave St Onge and Mike Rorick twist the knobs for a grandiose sound. Check out the tracks "It's Called Movin" on", the piano power pop ballad "Lying Under The Moon", "It's Not My Time" and the Latin tinged "The Right Way To Touch You". "'Between Head and Heart' a Bravo CD"

‘Between Head and Heart’ a Bravo CD

By Robert E. Kupczyk

Bee Entertainment Associate Editor

Local singer/songwriter/pianist Jason Bravo’s “Between Head and Heart” is a heartfelt 10-song CD.

From the get-go of “Between Head and Heart” you can hear that Bravo has an excellent voice and musicianship and uses them to their fullest throughout the CD.

Most of “Between Head and Heart” was recorded and mastered by David St. Onge at DMS Productions in Ransomville. The CD opens with “It’s Called Movin’ On,” a memorable, grooving tune featuring a recurring guitar riff and backup vocal “ahhs” that sounded like Bravo had The Eagles in the studio. The songs “I Can’t Find Any Water” and “The Right Way To Touch You” were recorded and originally mastered at Audio Magic by Mike Rorick.

“Please Don’t Say You Love Me” is a standout ballad that is instrumentally sparse, but anchored by a catchy piano theme, Bravo’s tenor voice and piano chord changes. “Between Head and Heart” features pop ballads that reminded me of Elton John and Tim Rice Disney film songs. Such examples include “Lying Under the Moon,” “It’s Not My Time,” “I’m Already Holding You” and “A Welcome In Your Smile.”

DISNEY PRODUCERS TAKE NOTE: Bravo’s songs could easily be used in any Disney animated film. (Remember, I tipped you off to him, and I do accept cash and/or checks.)

Bravo picks things up with the slick dance song “I Can’t Find Any Water,” a song that moves along at a brisk pace and features everything from wah-wah guitar to a female backup vocal. If we’re talking about musicals, Bravo’s ballad “Take Me As I Am” has an “Aida” feel to it, highlighted by percussion and Bravo’s melodic vocal. “The Champion” starts with a flurry of classical guitar notes played by Mir Ali. I can’t stress enough how well Bravo’s songs and voice suits film or musicals, as “The Champion” exemplifies this point. He’s got the pop ballad formula down pat.

“The Right Way To Touch You” is a dance song with a nice beat and features a Santana-tinged guitar response to the vocal in the chorus.

The great thing about the CD packaging is that lyrics are included, which gives the listener an insight into Bravo’s songwriting. It seems evident that Bravo is a songwriter who wants the listener to pay close attention to his abilities.

All the songs on “Between Head and Heart” were written by Bravo, with only the opening track including additional music by his brother and manager Gregory Bravo.

Bravo has assembled an accomplished supporting cast of musicians on “Between Head and Heart,” including his brother Greg, Mark Krurnowski, Cave Wilson, Geno McManus, Aaron Trubic, Nick Corallo, Jim Kurzdorfer, Mir Ali and Wendell Rivera.

If you enjoy pop ballads and solid songwriting, then you will certainly take Jason Bravo’s “Between Head and Heart” to heart. For more information on Bravo, visit www.jasonbravo.com.

BIOGRAPHY:
Honing his craft in coffeehouses in Buffalo and New York , Jason moved on to play the famed Rainbow Room in Rockefeller Center before releasing his debut CD "Between Head and Heart." Less than a year after his CD was released, he opened for the rock band Pure Prairie League ("Amie") at the Artpark Amphitheater in the HSBC-sponsored “Concerts at the Gorge” Series. Superstar producer David Foster even commented to him after hearing him perform "Lying Under the Moon": "That sounds like something I would have written..." Local TV and press. Lots of internet radio play, where his songs have become some of the top user-rated. A lot of exciting things have been happening recently!

His debut CD, “Between Head and Heart,” is a finely-crafted, often intimate, collection of original songs that range from piano ballads to funkier rock- and Latin-inspired tracks. Jason tries to write songs of sincerity and simplicity that are melody-driven and have lyrics that are universal but not clichéd.

His voice has been described as a cross between Elton John and Josh Groban, and his songwriting mirrors that of today’s hitmakers like James Blunt and Five For Fighting. He strives for honesty in his vocal performance, keeping it free of overwrought histrionics.

“I feel like music is a common denominator. We’re all living life, and go through a lot of the same things. I like it when people hear my songs and find that the words I write are things they feel, but maybe haven’t been able to articulate,” says Jason.

The lyrics throughout the CD have fans saying “That’s me.” Whether you need an extra shove to get over a relationship (Track 1 “It’s Called Movin’ On”) or simply need a moment to remember (Track 10 “A Welcome in Your Smile”), you find it on “Between Head and Heart”.

“When someone tells me that a song of mine moved them because they’ve felt those same sentiments in their own life, it really makes me feel great. That I can connect with people on that level and give them encouragement in a challenging time in their lives is, honestly, something I’m very thankful for.”

The CD “Between Head and Heart” is available online at www.cdbaby.com/cd/jasonbravo, www.amazon.com, www.itunes.com and in the Buffalo area at Borders Books and Music and Barnes and Noble.
