Biography

After writing and playing by his lonesome for several years, Jason Choi gathered some friends together to record a CD for Winter in July Records in 2003. Dubbing his backing band the Sea, Jason began writing songs with a fuller sound in mind, involving more guitars, keys, and percussion instruments. After their first tour of the southeast in the summer of 2004, Jason Choi and the Sea went back to the studio to begin work on a full-length album, Leave the Night Behind. Unlike those previous recordsings, these ten songs aspire to uplift the listener, using imagery of light and darkness as a parallel to good and evil, joy and sorrow, and hope and shame. After more touring and several lineup channges, Leave the Night Behindwas released in June of 2006 on Team Grizzly Records. The Release was directly followed by an eastern US tour. Jason Choi and the Sea has played with artists such as Phosphorescent (Misra), Madeline (Orange Twin), Castanets (Asthmatic Kitty), Defiance, Ohio (Plan-It_X), the Living Blue (Minty Fresh) Scout's Honor (No Idea), Baby Calender (Happy Happy Birthday to me), Look Mexico (Lujo), Clock Hands Strangle (Team Grizzly) Band Marino, and Summerbirds in the Cellar.

Lyrics

Waking

Written By: Jason Choi

waking
i am surrounded by words from lips unseen
constantly attacking me
confusing all purpose and truth
now where does darkness end
this is where we begin
i am not afraid
i am aware
i bear this light across my face
i am awake
believe it or not, they're coming for you
to steal and destroy what's been promised to you
so arm yourselves by the light of the day
the war is here the war is now
so arm yourselves or lay down and die
the war is here
the war is now.

Leave the Night Behind

Written By: Jason Choi

leave the night behind
just look at what these hands have made
and all the knowledge in our brains for every step we take
we make big plans, big plans, mistakes
that prove to be everything we need to lose sight
of every gift unseen and every single piece of who we're meant to be
oh, if we only touch his cloak we will be healed
oh, if we leave the night behind we will be revealed
there is life, there is love still to receive
it's rising as the sun in the sky
though i still forget that from time to time
it never leaves my mind.

More the Many Sparrows

Written By: Jason Choi

breathe in freely now
you've opened your door to let the poison out
your broken back will be mended soon
so stand up straight to let the burdens fall
you have been lied to over and over again
but your heart is strong, young, and so alive
the one that tried to hide it from the light -
he does not know your name or hold your fate like he thought
never forget who you are.

Morning

Written By: Jason Choi

from darkness born in the dark i wore your steady scowl
so i bit my lip i spit that blood on the prison walls
but the taste remained until morning came when i drank in light
those nights are gone that heart of stone lives here no more
now i see your teeth waiting for me in this deceit
you can't scar my face you can't wipe my name i came to stay
to let the sun soak through my skin chasing your voice out of my head.

And Boy are My Arms Tired

Written By: Jason Choi

greeted by summer storms you fled back in time to longer nights
and all who try to hide you from the light
their presence too heavy your efforts too light conflict was brought to life
between the love in your heart and the words in your mouth
crashing gently right off the mark
leave this place. find your way back home.

Aren't We Funny?

Written By: Jason Choi

you turned me into a cowboy shirt and a nice set of hands
while i kept his seat warm in the house that he built on a promise unfulfilled
i could not separate you from a soft voice and smooth skin
as wanting eyes cut through the dark to put me in my place
as the basketcase
as the fool again
but Deception, don't you know that i'm a quitter?
i'll shake the dust from my shoes and i'll make my way home
because love is coming in the morning.

Up Jumps the Devil

Written By: Jason Choi

wake up, o sleeper rise from the dead
wake up, receive him, and leave the night behind
but this is the devil whispering in my ear
and that's his hand creeping up your thigh
as we climb higher and higher it's harder to breathe
and the echo of your final gasp is the only sound
as i dive head first into that casket
i can't wash these hands
i can't warm this house
i am helpless without movement
helpless without you.

Down Pours Grace

Written By: Jason Choi

maybe tomorrow i'll be the person that you think i am
and i will wake up without the burden of regret on my back
i'm dying to run but sometimes i stop breathing
the laziness spills from my lungs
i'm looking for strength but i have trouble sleeping
i can barely open my eyes
you are the song of my heart
you are the song
but i've found so many ways to drown out your voice
and still you scream for me
someday i'll get it right
it will be the death of me
someday i'll get it right.

Good Luck to you, Sailor

Written By: Jason Choi

we never made good on those words a life away from land
we could have wasted every day investing in what's as important as anything
in this place
now you've built yourself a new home
and they'll never understand because they never learned
they never learned anything they care too much for everything
in this place
save your breath today
the world has heard enough of your apologies
i hope you can agree with a clear conscience
and a raised chin.

Reminder

Written By: Jason Choi

i can't draw my eyes from the sky
what an incredible reminder that he hasn't forgotten us
we're the ones who turn away filling our hands with empty tokens
of a world that does not care
the rain falls to the earth
desparately trying to wash away this mess that we have made
so we can start over clean once again
just like we always wanted
i know that i've been selfish
but my legs aren't feeling tired
and as i walk this path
i won't stop looking up.
