Biography

JASON DEAN:
A LIVE PERFORMER
Vocalist Pianist Songwriter

All good things come to those who wait….

Here’s a man who’s allowed himself, to develop a monstrous talent. Having made a fine living, unashamedly performing covers on the fastidious Melbourne live scene for the last fifteen years, it’s not surprising that this undiscovered singer/songwriter/pianist can own a stage and an audience the way he does.

Maintaining a large and loyal following, as a respected and electrifying live performer, faithfully tied to his roots in his home-town of Frankston (Mornington Peninsula, Victoria), Jason is now primed to extradite said loyal following, to the glorious city of Melbourne and certainly beyond, via infection of others, on a much more regular basis. However, from here on, the ever-loyal following will be enjoying Jason Dean performing songs written especially for him.

Steadily focused on his original song-writing and recording project for a number of years now, out of the cosy “hotted up” recording facility (Evolupe Productions) he has built with his business partners, Jason Dean is about to embark on a long-awaited and carefully considered journey that every cover-artist dreams of. So long “cover-band land”! Thanks for the experience!

Melbourne radio listeners at large are unaware of their subconscious association with this recognizable voice, from numerous radio station jingles, and call signs (“One oh- one point one double tee eff em”…). We’ve all unknowingly heard him on the airwaves, but tit-bits just ain’t enough!

Whilst Jason’s early years were spent with the Australian Boys Choir, his teens were spent musically directing school productions and performing covers in live music venues all over -piano bars, pubs and nightclubs, casinos, sports clubs - even the Collingwood Football Club specifically requested Jason’s almighty lungs at Victoria Park to entertain the masses, the day after their historic early-90’s AFL Grand Final win.

In years gone by, as a heat winner and series finalist on New Faces, Jason has also experienced performing to camera with additional appearances on the other free-to-air networks.

More recently, within the walls of Evolupe, Jason has worked with Dan Hall (ex-Taxiride) in pre-production for his debut solo release. On the stylistically varied works and recordings of many local artists at Evolupe, Jason utilizes his second-nature skills for sequencing and programming, arranging and producing.

And as a session player in others’ studios, for example, with Rob Mills (Aus Idol) who requested Jason’s assistance in rehearsing his recently released debut album and desperately wanted to include Jason in his touring band, however our boy’s commitment to his own project and his studio won out. Thankfully.

Jason Dean’s vocal presentation is clearly what sets him apart from the hundreds of musicians he’s performed with. Watch closely, there’s something you’ll fall in love with here. Expression and feel are always on the menu and tasty, fertile instrumentation is served up like red wine and cheese. With flavour and care, and not too much pretension, the way we all like to enjoy it.

And so, those years of playing others’ music have ultimately translated to the best live performance experience that a singer / songwriter under self-imposed development could ever possess.

Jason will still play some covers, new and obscure, favourites and standards (just try and stop him) as he’s always expertly delivered with his own tweaking. But when your own songs are just as worthy as the covers you’ve been playing forever, well, there’s no question about the next step!

THE SONGS OF JASON DEAN

At Evolupe HQ, Jason engineers melodic creation. With his devoted partners and co-writers, (Simon Moran and Jessica Brown – who together own and operate pro live audio supplier Optim Audio out of the same premises), Jase has formed an effective, inspired song-writing and production team. With new original material constantly spewing forth, in the coming year Evolupe Productions will independently release its first recording of Jason Dean.

Other contributors to the writing process at this stage have included Karl Lewis (drummer/percussionist – Savage Garden, Bachelor Girl, the Hampdens), whose consummate drum-set playing, sequencing & programming has fuelled the process with a signature pop feel and impeccable timing.

The songs themselves, like “Only You”, a heartfelt appeal to a much younger lover, are commercially pleasing to the teenybopper, yet, technically appealing to the advanced musician. Listen to the simplicity of the showstopper, “Can You Hear Me Now” – a disarming ode to those who declare their support and belief, yet never tangibly deliver on promises – Jason’s vocal and piano is unadorned and a riveting, rawly emotional delivery is the result. “Plain To See” cries of disappointment and then realisation. The superbly penned

Lyrics

Can You Hear Me Now

Written By: Dean, Lewis, Moran

Like the egg that broke
Something flowed out like yolk
A river from me, developing insecurity
And then in a flash, my faith would crash
Down around me
As the world came down on me

Now I need to see, just so simply
A greater man than I would want to be
So I say to you

Can you hear me now
I’ll take you to another place, another time
I will show you how
So can you hear me, can you hear me now

There’s a crack in my thought
Return to what I have bought
Please explain to my brain
That everything’s alright now
I’ll exchange what I had
Just to feel glad
With pleasantries from a special place

I’ll reveal to a better side of me
For you to say

Can you hear me now
I’ll take you to another place, another time
I will show you how
So can you hear me, can you hear me now

Sit alone, wonder why, is it that I need to try
Find a space where I can see
Understand what, what’s really me

Can you hear me now
I’ll take you to another place, another time
I will show you how
So can you hear me, can you hear me now

Only You

Written By: Dean, Lewis, Moran

And about that time
I knew it was you I really needed
Put myself out there
Just to find out if you could care
And as time moved on
My confidence and strength was gone
Intimidation grew
Doubted what was me to you

Is it me
Could it be
That we found out who we are
The years between too far

Only you can make this call
For me to be with you
Will I ever have the chance
A wish came true for
Two lonely hearts
Years apart… what can I say

Yes I probably know
They’ll say its wrong, unfair, unjust
But I know what I feel…
It’s something true, it’s something real
Look inside yourself
Release the fears
And it’s finally over
We could be what we want to believe
We could find a way to be together

You and me
To be free
Just to find out who we are
And the years don’t seem so far

Only you can make this call
For me to be with you
Will I ever have the chance
A wish came true for
Two lonely hearts
Years apart…

What else can I say
To make you feel this way

Only you can make this call
For me to be with you
Will I ever have the chance
A wish came true for
Two lonely hearts
Years apart… what can I say

Time

Written By: Dean, Lewis, Moran

I was just a fool in life
To believe in things that shine so bright
Chances come and chances go
Who’s got the answers, I don’t know
But I’m looking for it deep inside

Like a blind man, I could not see
Where the truth did lie, my destiny
And time and time again, I’m wrong
But if I just keep movin’ on
I’ll find the dream I’ve been looking for

Time, to let things go
Time to give, trust and flow
And in time you will only see
Time will be the key

Like a little child, has grown to man
Then he’s supposed to live his master-plan
Then it’s time to see
What I really need to be
Head for the clouds, we’ll leave it all behind

Time, to let things go
Time to give, trust and flow
And in time you will only see
Time will be the key

No matter how hard I try
I never know the reason why
Can I be strong for me
Cause I long to be
Here in a place where I find my way
I’ve moved onto that, happy, happy sunny day

Through all the changes that I made
All the time they seem to just fade away
Now it’s time to find the truth
I have to face up, just can’t lose
I will catch me as I fall

Time, to let things go
Time to give, trust and flow
And in time you will only see
Time will be the key
