"Jason Emanuel Britton sings at Bellevue Club"

Jason Emanuel Britton is a born showman. His obvious connection and love of the lyric is evident from the moment he comes before his audience to sing the words of an old standard or a contemporary tune that has touched him. He is eager to SHARE that love with his assembled salon. He interprets each song with an eagerness and appreciation that is artful, skillful and contagious. Before too long, you are right there "with" him, truly "getting" what those beautiful words actually mean, hearing them for the "first time". He brings a new yet, very traditional feel of the CABARET experience. To say that he is the consummate performer could be a cliche, but it is truly the case! Don't miss experiencing his wonderfully generous spirit!

Special guest at the performance will be Kellie Fuller, best known as sunrise deejay weekdays on KVYN’s “Kellie in the Morning.”
Britton performs regularly throughout the Bay Area.

His latest show had its Bay Area debut recently at the historic Bellevue Club on Oakland’s Lake Merritt. At the end of July, the Bay Area baritone will take it to the world-famous Don't Tell Mama nightclub off Times Square in New York City.
His performances offer lush, intimate arrangements of classic and contemporary American songs by many famous and lesser-known composers including Alec Wilder and William Engvick, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Rome, ‘Yip’ Harburg, Amanda McBroom, Stephen Sondheim, Ricky Ian Gordon, Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Duke Ellington.

His show “A step beyond the rain ...” premiered at Martuni’s in San Francisco to enthusiastic audiences and played the Berkeley City Club and the Metropolitan Club in San Francisco’s Union Square.
Britton was a lead performer in “Pins and Needles,” a musical review by Harold Rome from the 1930s, performed at La Pena Cultural Center and the San Francisco Music Center.

His solo cabaret show “Stairway to the Stars,” premiered at the Larkspur Café Theatre in 2006 featuring notable American tunes from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s with musical direction by Frank Johnson.

In 2005, his solo cabaret show, “Putting It Together!,” was presented at Kelly’s of Alameda and at Martuni’s in San Francisco. Later that year, Britton performed his show “Finding Home” at the Trinity Chamber Concerts in Berkeley and at The White Barn in St. Helena.

She has been singing professionally for many years, and features a soulful voice with a tremendous range in both her vocals and styling.

Having returned to the stage after a brief hiatus while raising her two young children, Kellie made her debut with Mike Greensill recently at Silo’s Jazz Club to great acclaim, and the two of them performed on a “West Coast Live” broadcast from Napa.

Guest flutist for the Silo’s show will be Diane Grubbe.

"The Arts: From follies to melodramas and art, there's something for everyone with Vagabond's 'Fabulous Follies'"

Where can you see an 82-year-old tap dancer, disco dancer and a Follies Bergere singer dressed in full-feathered regalia all on one stage?

Maybe the same place you'd see a 1950s doo-wop a cappella group, a high-stepping dance ensemble and patriotic show tune singers? Yep, Vagabond Players has it all in its newest fundraiser revue, "Fabulous Follies," which opened last weekend at El Campanil Theatre and continues through Sunday.

Any number of performers in this dazzling song-and-dance show, directed by Sharon Redman, would be worth the $20 (adult) admission price. There's Rhonda Taylor, who recently recovered from surgery, but still did a bang-up job performing a sizzling "Follies Bergere" with her red-hot feathered headdress and sexy French accent. And there's the fabulous Anna-Lisa Muroaka in "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," Hello Young Lovers" and "Popular," and the steamy Ella Wolfe with "Cheek to Cheek," "Come on Strong" and "At Last."

Other standouts include Jason Emanuel Britton with "If I Loved You" and "The Lady is a Tramp"; Terry D'Emidio with "Everyone's Girl" and "Adelaide's Lament"; and Norm Gilbert with "New York, New York" and "My Way."

If that weren't enough, the Bay Area-based a cappella group House Blend nearly takes down the house with its four-part harmonies and doo-wop medleys, all performed with an abundance of rhythm, humor and energy.

The dancers were not to be outdone either, performing everything from jazz, to disco to ballet moves all

under the able direction of choreographer Jennifer Hughes, who also dances in the show.

With some 50 area singers, dancers and performers and 400 costumes changes, there's something for everyone in this fun production.

The show continues at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Reserved seating tickets are $20 general admission, $15 for seniors (62 and up), and $10 for youths under 17. Group rates are available. Visit www.elcampaniltheatre.com or call 757-9500.

THERE'S MORE FUN DOWN THE ROAD: Pittsburg Community Theatre continues the fun with its highly entertaining "Gaslight Girl" melodrama Friday and Saturday at a temporary new location, the Pittsburg Historical Society Museum, 515 Railroad Ave.

This old-fashioned John Jakes melodrama musical blends 19th-century melodrama and 20th-century musical theater in a 21st-century venue. The show is right up Director Betty Brown's alley, the kind of silly romp she delights in sharing with others. Where else can you see a former Antioch citizen of the year winner (Wayne Steffen) play a drunk and a felon? Or an insurance man (Tim Biglow) play a bum and a barkeeper? The talented -- and always humorous -- Kevin Burns and amusing Gioia Stark (Amelia Van Dorp) add to the delight as does the fabulous singer Mandi Diehl (Mary Goodhue).

The play is sold out, but theatergoers can show up to any given performance to see if there are cancellations.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Michelle Brown directs the music and Nancy Logaburn performs on piano.

Call 925-439-PLAY for more information or go to pittsburgcommunitytheatre.org.

"Antioch’s exquisite El Campanile Theater hosts the Vagabond Players doing it all in their “Fabulous Follies”"

The Vagabond Players are staging in Antioch what they call their “Fabulous Follies”. While it is described by the literature as a “musical review”, it is much more than that as the show includes a lot of dancing and dancing skits, sometimes even a dance routine that is nothing more than an excuse to move props on or off stage. Generally, when I think of a “musical review”, I think of the songs by a particular writer (Gershwin) or composer or of a particular genre (Jazz) or a particular time period (1940’s and 1950’s). This show has no particular genre, just some terrific entertainers that include singers, both solo artists and singing groups and a variety of dancers that do a mixture of song and dances. The musical variety includes turn of the century barbershop, show tunes from musicals, single hits and solo artists (ie: Frank Sinatra), comedy song routines, acapella/doowop and barbershop harmony, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, mo-town favorites and even country hits.

The Vagabond Players Theatrical Company has set its sights on entertaining the senior audience and often includes productions that are geared specifically to encourage senior actors to be an active and an integral part of their productions. This production is a gathering of everyone who probably has ever acted in or wanted to get up on stage and try their wings. While there are a number of truly professional performers or previously full time professional performers in this show, director Sharon Redman and her co-director, Jennifer Hughes, a professional dance choreographer, have obviously issued an open invitation to all comers, professional and non-professional alike.

There are some sterling performances from song stylists such as, Jason Emanuel Britton, Ella Wolfe, Terry D’Emidio, Rhonda Taylor and Anna-Lisa Muroaka and an acapella group who call themselves “House Blend”. There are some excellent dance routines both serious and comedic by such talented people as Jennifer Hughes, Jennifer Peabody and Terry D’Emidio. There are a number of guys who I would not classify as dancers, but they are terrifically entertaining as members of dance routines, including Shawn Bonnington, Bill Dietz, Charlie Pitak, Josh Thorpe and Norm Gilbert who add significantly to the overall levity of the evening. While I don’t have space to give adequate kudos to all who deserve them, the show provided a very full evening of diverse entertainment.

On the other hand, directors Redmond and Hughes are like the gal in Oklahoma who “Jes’ Cain’t Say No!” and should have said no to a number of the numbers to cut the show down to a reasonable size, as it ran from a little after 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. before it was over. Much too, too long!

This fun filled "Fabulous Follies" evening of entertainment continues next weekend in the El Campanil, located at 602 West 2nd street in old downtown Antioch, Saturday, May 15th at 2 pm and 8 p.m., then again on Sunday the 16th for a 2 p.m. matinee. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors, and $10 for youth, 17 and under. Tickets may be purchased at the ticket office next door to the theater, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., or again up to one hour before show time, or by phone at 757-9500. It you have never been to the El Campanil then I highly suggest you do so. This gorgeous old theatre has been recently restored to its early grandeur and is an absolute gem of a theater. Please go on line and check out this theater at http://www.elcampaniltheatre.com/ . They provide many opportunities for excellent entertainment. - Charles Jarrett (reviewer)

Reaction to Jason's shows:

The audience sat spellbound throughout, responding to each number with cheers and applause. The main purpose of cabaret is to entertain, and that certainly was accomplished.
~ Cabaret Hotline, New York

"Jason has a wonderful variety of songs, awesome tonal quality and range, and emotive power to fill one's evening with a most memorable musical experience."
~Tom Fernandez, audience member

"Jason's voice expresses the warmth and open-heartedness of his personality. It is as though he is saying with every number, "Isn't this a beautiful song? I just had to share it with you." With so many other singers, they open their mouths and you wonder "where is that voice coming from?" With Jason, the sound, the song and the feeling come straight from the heart."
~Steve Savage, www.savagephoto.com
