Enters Jason "Hoss" Hicks into the rockabilly ring. Jason recently signed to Wild Hare Records and is pleased as punch to see that his new 4 song 45 EP is hitting the market place. Jason, a boxer and prolific rocker, is recently best known as the front man for the Old Line Skiffle Band. This 45 EP is perhaps the best release to date by Wild Hare, says co-owner Dave Moore. Jason is an amazing songwriter and an amazing singer as well. His "24 Hours A Day" is as good as it gets. Full of raw power and expressive vocals. Jason is backed on the recordings by veteran artists Thommy Burns, the legendary Maynard Sheppard and the Helldivers. All songs were recorded live to glorious analog and then transferred to vinyl.

Taking their name from an Ohio town, rockabilly purists The Steubenville Knights formed out of two other retro-mined outfits The Atomics and King Kerosene. Featuring the rootsy talents of bassist/vocalist Thommy Burns, guitarist Scott Murphy and guitarist Jason "Hoss" Hicks, the quirkily named Virginia trio released it's debut album The Royal Party in 2001. ~ Matt Collar, **** 4 stars - Artist Direct
At 6:30 in the Iroquois room, I saw an absolutely great set by the Old Line Skiffle Combo. The Old Line Skiffle Combo is a Maryland based group whose members have thick resumes in all kinds of roots music. Among the groups members of this quintet have played with include: Peashooters, Steubenville Knights, The Atomics, Blue Moment Jazz, Western Bop and The Boom Boom Cats. "Skiffle" for those who are not familiar, was a pre-Beatles British sound that included an amalgamation of ragtime, folk and blues. If you remember Lonnie Donegan ("Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor On the Bedpost Overnight" was a big USA hit), he was probably the Elvis Presley of skiffle. Even the early Beatles were described as being in that category. The members of the Old Line Skiffle Combo are Jason "Hoss" Hix on vocals and acoustic guitar, Steve Knight on lead guitar and banjo, Louie Newmyer on bass and vocals, Mark Pettijohn on drums and washboard, and Maynard Sheppard on washboard and ukulele.
I have run into Louie before, and we even were on the same plane from Detroit to Green Bay and back again. Besides The Old Line Skiffle Combo, Louie also plays with Terence McArdle and Big Trouble (a jump blues band) and J. P. McDermott and Western Bop (rockabilly and classic country).
Anyway, these guys really rocked! Good song selection, great vocals V E R Y danceable music. Their songs included "Don't You Rock Me Dadddy-o," "Blue Blue Heartache," "I'm Satisfied," "Last Train to San Fernando," "Hobo Blues," "Jack of Diamonds" (a Lonnie Donegan song), a medley of railroad songs, and others.
They also performed original songs composed by them including "Just Take Me Home," "Please Mister Law," "It's Not Right," "What Really Happened" and "Baby That's Not Enough."
Whether you were dancing, or watching, or listening, the Old Line Skiffle Combo turned in an absolutely great performance for the lucky people that were able to see it. Don't miss this band if they come to your town.

You may have seen the noble name of the Steubenville Knights for the first time in advertising for the upcoming Rockabilly Rebel Weekend #9. Who are they? A new rockin' trio made up of Thommy Burns (ex-Atomics) on vocals and slap bass (anyone at RRW #8 may have seen him slapping the bass with Vernon Taylor), Scott Murphy of King Kerosene on electric guitar, and newcomer Jason 'Hoss' Hicks of the Peashooters on acoustic guitar. Their debut CD, titled "The Royal Party" was just released on Finland based Jungle Records and is a great mix of wild originals and Rockabilly interpretations of hits by Dean Martin, Mel Torme, and Nat King Cole, among others (!) Growing up on a wide range of influences, Jason HOSS Hicks has gathered up all of his musical strength to bring you a very eclectic brand of music.
At any one time growing HOSS would be listening to Elvis Presley, immediately followed by The Smiths, to be followed by The Stray Cats. These records would be played over and over and over again. Clearly influenced by the songwriting of Morrissey, Thommy Burns of The Atomics, and Brett Anderson of Suede, HOSS blended his Chris Isaak, Roy Orbison tenor and started writing.
Rockabilly was the name of the game around 1996 when he started his first band The Peashooters with Louie Newmyer on upright bass, Pedro Sera on guitar and Tom Bose on drums. They enjoyed a few years of success and played frequently. While seeing a show at a local haunt, HOSS would become mesmerized by the Atomics. "I didn't realize there was a band out there like this, with fantastically sad and bright at the same time rockabilly influenced tunes." After again checking out the Atomics, HOSS struck up a friendship with lead singer Thommy Burns. With the Atomics on the outs, HOSS and Burns would team up with Scott Murphy of King Kerosene fame to form a killer trio named The Steubenville Knights. From the Knights came the aptly titled The Royal Party on Jungle Records. Touring around cars shows and rockabilly festivals paid off as the Knights enjoyed much success. With a million ideas and musicians to play with HOSS decided to form the infamous Old Line Skiffle Combo with Louie Newmyer and Mark Pettijohn. A CD was released on Wild Hare Records titled Bettin On The Old Line Skiffle Combo. Also on Wild Hare Records, HOSS released a 7" record titled Train Aint Comin Round with 4 tracks Train Aint Comin Round, 24 Hours A Day, Not Right, Bop on Thru the Night as well as 7 songs on the wildly popular Aint Rocket Science Vol. 1.
Now performing as a solo artist, HOSS has taken all of his experience, influences and ideas and combined them into Jason HOSS Hicks-home of the melodic twang. Look for the Long Player titled Original Cover Art sometime late 2007!!!
