"On the Horizon... Jason Kirkness"

Music is something different to everyone, but to Jason Kirkness, it’s always been a part of his everyday life. Jason recalls his earliest influences, “I really liked a lot of bands growing up, with just a few being Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Waylon Jennings. My first "band" was when we were barely teenagers and could barely play our instruments. A lot of my playing style and mentality for playing in a group came from those formative years, playing together and singing songs.” A lot has changed for Jason, but one thing has not and that’s his passion for country music!

Jason’s keen attitude and undeniable talent have certainly proven to be character building, especially when it comes to songwriting: “In the past I've really been into writing on my own. On "Life On The Road," I also worked with a songwriter called William Prince who works on his own, most of the time. We co-wrote the title track for my first record, "Life On The Road." We are working on a lot more co-writes for the next record, so... not to spoil the surprise, but the second album will have a lot of those moments on it.” What more could any avid country listener ask for?

Whether creating co-writing bonds or ‘moments’ on his newest album, there’s one thing that Jason truly enjoys; it’s hard to ignore the sincerity when he says, “my favourite part of being an artist is meeting and hanging out with the fans. Getting to know the people that love you and support you is really special.” His natural rapport with country music lovers and his genuine passion for music translate to an enthralling stage presence, which Jason claims, “It's where I feel the most like myself and it's what I imagined when I closed my eyes as a teenager.” What Jason may not have imagined, however, is the resounding reception that his music received from his fans.

With all this talk of memories and moments, which of Jason’s many performance experiences does he hold to be the most memorable? “I think the most memorable night I’ve had recently was in Thunder Bay, ON at Lakehead University. There were about 400 people at the venue and the whole front of the stage was packed. A lot of people were singing along with my first single "Run Me Away" and we had just started playing my second single called "No Cowboy," which hasn't been released yet, and they were singing along with that one too. It has a big sing-a-long chorus and it was a lot of fun!”
Jason’s fans definitely have a lot to say about his music, which he himself would describe as "Rockin' Country". Jason’s lifelong relationship with country music has not only given him a distinctive sound, but also a vision: “I'm really lucky that I had a clear idea of what I wanted to sound like before we went into the studio. I knew that I wanted very strong country elements . . . I love the banjo and the steel and the fiddle . . . they are the sounds that made me fall in love with country music when I was young.” Jason’s own passion for country music is sure to keep fans falling in love with his music for years to come. - CCMA.org

Bio

Growing up in a small farming community in Southeast Manitoba, Jason Kirkness found his heart in country music. Since then he has been heavily influenced by the new Nashville sound while never straying too far from his roots.

Jason Kirkness is a songwriter by nature, but for his debut full-length solo album, Life on the Road, he's opted to feature work from Bruce Wallace & Steven Lee Olson (Ole/Roots 3, Nashville) along with local songwriter William Prince. Jason and William spent a lot of time together working out the themes and stories they wanted to share with the fans, but Jason's tour schedule left William to finish the songs on his own. The two have already started to co-write Jason's next album. The first single from Life on the Road entitled “Run Me Away” was released to radio in February 2011.

Jason has performed hundreds of shows throughout his home province of Manitoba and across Canada including opening spots for George Canyon, Dwight Yoakam, The Roadhammers and Deric Ruttan, along with showcases at the Canadian Country Music Awards in Edmonton and Canadian Music Week in Toronto. He and his band continue to connect with audiences across Canada in 2011 with dates from BC to Quebec as well as the Northwest Territories.

Currently, Jason has a management and development contract with Contact Artist Management, who is also the home of country artist Jerry Sereda, Ron Loutit and previously handled development & management for Bryce Pallister. Jason has also signed a Record and Distribution Deal with MDM Recordings which means national distribution through EMI.
