Jason Peterson was a songwriter long before he could play an instrument.
“When I was growing up I would write terrible Weird Al Yankovic-style lyrics to my favorite songs. I remember writing a song called ‘Butter Man’ to the tune of Pearl Jam’s ‘Better Man’ about a guy’s obsession with butter. They were awful…but fun.”
Born and raised south of Chicago, IL, the 26-year-old singer/songwriter began writing songs on guitar soon after receiving a flea market electric for Christmas in the 7th grade. He switched to bass guitar in high school and spent the next four years playing shows across the Midwest and recording several EPs with the band Remedy.
“We were young when we started and didn’t know what we were doing, but as we played more and improved so did the songs. Most of my early song attempts still make me cringe a little, but I definitely learned a lot in those years.”
While attending Western Illinois University, Jason recorded the album Better Than Yesterday with Chicago-based Stellar Road and played bass in a variety of projects. He continued to play out occasionally while teaching high school English, and he kept writing songs and strumming hostel guitars after leaving teaching to backpack in New Zealand and Australia for the better part of a year.
After returning to the States, Jason moved to Nashville, TN to play bass in The White Stone Prophecy, a project headed by two of his best friends and former band mates Paul Kaszubski and Josh Berg. He also started playing open mics and recording his own songs with engineer Jonathan Scholten. These recordings formed the basis of 'Contronyms,' Jason's EP that will be available early 2008.
“I had a notebook of songs to choose from that spanned years of writing, but I ended up using songs that I had written in my short time in Nashville. They just fit together better.”
The songs on 'Contronyms' encompass a range of ideas and emotions, but almost all of them center on the things most important to Jason: compassion, love, and searching beyond material life to the transcendent. He hopes these songs resonate with listeners – or at least puts a smile on their faces.
It’s a goal not too far removed from ‘Butter Man.’
