"In Your Speakers: Javis Faux: Deal With It, Vol. III (Album Review)"

Young music producer Javis "FauX" Johnson has a knack for engineering electronic pseudo-dubstep music good enough to blast in a dance hall or blast in your living room. At 24 years old, he describes himself as a "traveler" and "hobbyist," and the beats he produces are as lively as his persona. This playfulness is even apparent in his choice of album artwork: a portrait-style oil painting of the young producer holding an either confused or worried feline. Citing Timbaland has one of his inspirations, his goal is to create light instrumentation over complex, layered bass and rhythm. The result is a healthy combination of playful electronic hip-hop music injected with the kind of beat and rhythm that will get even the most awkward of people to bop their heads comfortably. On his newest release, Deal With It, Vol. III, he delivers a jam-laden album with tracks that aren't just catchy, but contagious.

The album opens with "No Big Deal," which sounds a little like the intro track to a rap album, with a sort of big sound forming gradually, almost like fanfare. "Prosper" opens with a jazz hook which gently invades both ears before the beat lays down over top, offering enough intensity to remind the listener that drum beats are the wheelhouse, but beats don't overwhelm the musical integrity of the song. "Mint Julep" is another jazzier track which uses the sound of the brush on the drum to mellow the track out. It’s these brief ventures outside of the hip-hop realm that make the album a fun and interesting listen.

"Don't Play With Synthesizers" almost sounds like a corrupted version of a video game tune. FauX is a gamer by hobby, and the soft electronic instrumentation seems to be a wink and nod to a soundtrack found on classic Nintendo titles. It also serves as a jovial laugh at the expense of other music within the electronic genre, and while his music shares characteristics with it, his music stands out as much more hip-hop and R&B rather than true electronic. "All Mines" has an R&B vibe, with mixed female vocals that are just begging to be sampled. “The Gold Standard” uses a drum hook that sounds like it should have some lyrics over top of it, sounding a little incomplete. Perhaps this is just the listener wishfully thinking there were some lyrics to sing along to.

FauX seems to be succeeding at getting comfortable in places where, musically, he may not be expected to be: his biography reads like that of both an accomplished DJ and an endearing AV nerd who is asking you to literally, deal with his contrasting interests. This reflects solidly on the third installment of Deal With It, which shows solid foundations in hip-hop and dubstep, while branching out into jazz and synthy electronic without sounding contrived or overdone. Javis FauX is here, he’s comfortable, and he’s got a lot to build on. Here’s hoping that he sticks around. - Ashley Pike (In Your Speakers)

Bio

You know those ridiculous talents that you just want to play for anyone and everyone? Atlanta music producer Javis FauX Johnson has a knack for engineering electronic, pseudo-dubstep music good enough to blast in a dance hall or blast in your living room. At 25 years old, he describes himself as a traveler and video game enthusiast, and the music he produces is as lively as his persona. Citing Timbaland and Organized Noize as his top inspirations, Javiss goal is to create light instrumentation over complex, layered bass and rhythm. The result is a healthy combination of playful electronic, hip-hop music injected with the kind of beat and rhythm that will get even the most awkward of people to bop their heads comfortably.Whats most intriguing about the burgeoning beatsmith? His ability to blend sounds from different genres, namely synth-based electronic and Southern boom-bap, to create something new and palate-cleansing. FauX showcases an ever-growing skill set and affinity for synthesizers, as well as flaunting a clear grasp on video game soundtrack composition in which a majority of his production thumps and bounces across layers of SNES warbles and trunk-rattling drums. He is a gamer by hobby, and his instrumentation seems to be a wink and nod to a soundtrack found on classic Nintendo titles. It also serves as a jovial laugh at the expense of other music within the electronic genre, and while his music shares characteristics with it, his music stands out as much more hip-hop and R&B rather than true electronic.Yet, its no surprise then that his first introduction to beatmaking came in 2002. One of my friends from middle school introduced me to this game MTVs Music Generator 2 for Playstation 2 , Javis explains. More than anything, it was crash course in learning how to sequence and structure a song. It wasnt until 2007, after he graduated high school that he began to take his music career. What really jump-started everything was a senior project we had to do for high school. They told us to do a project on something weve never done before and since Music Generator was only a video game version of music production, I decided to go with the real thing, remembers Javis on his humble beginnings One of my dads co-workers gave me a copy of Reason 3, and it basically the beginning of changed my life. A year or two later, he moved to Atlanta to where he began honing his skill while working with local artists, including an unknown, at the time, Yelawolf.Javis continued working with more artists such as Sean Falyon, El Prez, Overdoz and Slim (of 112) while also releasing several of his own solo projects in the form of beat tapes and remix projects. Since aligning himself with Potholes In My Blogs label, Potholes Music, in 2012, he has released 2 EPs and FauXed N Throwed mixtape. His most recent to date, Deal With It, Vol. 3, shows solid foundations in hip-hop and dubstep, while branching out into jazz and synthy electronic without sounding contrived or overdone. With his production being featured on popular online media outlets such as 2DopeBoyz, The Source, and MTV Jams, a new EP on the horizon and a proper full-length LP from the Potholes label slated for a late 2014 release, Javis FauX seems to be succeeding at getting comfortable in places where, musically, he may not be expected to be. Hes here, hes comfortable, and hes got a lot to build on. Whether its manipulating samples and fusing them to swashes of synthesizers and crisp drums or dropping his signature DJ Screw-inspired FauXed N Throwed mixes, FauX showcases the talents of a producer equally in his zone and unafraid to venture into new territory.
