I Don't Smoke (But I Could Use a Cigarette)

I Don't Smoke (But I Could Use a Cigarette)
Words and Music by: Jason Florence

Hey there, little lady with the bedding on
You barely touched your food last night
And today you seem withdrawn
I know, I know all eyes are on you

And that's a terrible thing for anybody to go through

I don't smoke, but I could use a cigarette
The nicotine it burns but has a calming effect
I need a distraction for this stiff upper lip
Just a moment or two when I don't think about this

You can't catch your breath, babe, where'd it run off to?
Everybody's talking and the conversation is you
And all these whispers are tiring to hear
And you need your rest, darling, so I'll be right here

I don't smoke, but I could use a cigarette
The nicotine it burns but has a calming effect
I need a distraction for this stiff upper lip
Just a moment or two when I don't think about this

Let's do something everyone can see
Carve two little hearts onto that old park tree
You are the best, everyone tells me
The best thing thats ever happened to me

Hey there little lady, in a brighter mood?
I appreciate your attempted smile when the news isn't good
I know it didn't work, but this is only round two
And yes, even this, we will get through

I don't smoke, but I could use a cigarette
The nicotine it burns but has a calming effect
I need a distraction for this stiff upper lip
Just a moment or two when I don't think about this

Louis Blues

Louis Blues
Words and music by Jason Florence

I was thinking 'bout the French when I became impressed
With how they dealt with oppression when it came to a head

Louis had fine wine and cheese and the fluer de' leas
Oh, but God Himself could not save the king from the gallows or the guillotine

If history repeats we are long overdue, so I'll start sharpening a razor or two
I'll start sharpening a razor or two

Louis had fine wine and cheese and the fluer de' leas
Oh, but God Himself could not save the king from the gallows or the guillotine

Pretty Good Day

Pretty Good Day
Words and Music by Jason Florence

A man got on the bus and sat right in the front
With a Gideon Bible shouting, “Praise!”
He told an old lady he was gonna be blunt
She needed some savin’ from her sinful ways

He had a brochure for a ‘Born Again’ retreat
It would only cost her a couple of grand
He offered his God, but not his seat
He made that old lady stand

All in all it's been a pretty good day
A pretty good day to be with you
And in spite of it all its been a pretty good day
A pretty good day to be with you

(A pretty good day to be with you)

A mother and a father were walking through a park
Drinking trademarked, expensive coffee brews
One said to the other: “Where do I start?
I ain’t racist, I got a black friend or two.”

The baby in the stroller was taking a nap
As they walked around a puddle of water
Dad said, “I’d give a black the shirt off my back
But one will never date or marry my daughter.”

All in all it's been a pretty good day
A pretty good day to be with you
And in spite of it all its been a pretty good day
A pretty good day to be with you

(A pretty good day to be with you)

A teenage girl was arrested
For sending sexy pictures to her boyfriend
From the back seat of her daddy’s Lexus
And for that boy, his good thing came to an end

Now a skinny boy in that same girl’s class
Bully knuckles beat him to a pulp everyday
That girl’s doing time while violence gets a pass
They say boys will be boys anyway

Boys will be boys, anyway

All in all it's been a pretty good day
A pretty good day to be with you
And in spite of it all its been a pretty good day
A pretty good day to be with you

(A pretty good day to be with you)

The man from the bus got off at the last station
Without that old lady’s two-grand
I heard her say, “You can’t put a price on salvation”
I said, “Hmmm, apparently, you can.”

Hmmm, apparently you can.

She Isn't You

She Isn't You

Stepping outside I hope it's not raining
It is cold, but not a cloud in sight
But anyway, I know what I am missing
A little sunshine in this lonely life

With both know something
But we both say nothing
And girl I wish I could stay
But I suppose I should get back home to her anyway

She isn't you
And she isn't you
She sure is something
But she's not you

"How are things, J.?",
You seemed eager to say
"Between you and, sincerely,
What's her name?"

"Good I guess, isn't that how things go?"
But from what I know
And from I've been told
She isn't you"

She isn't you
And she isn't you
She sure is something
But she's not you

"She's beautiful", you said
And this much I know
But you went on and on
About how much you thought so

And you will always be
The girl who got away
But what were you running from anyway?
Anyway?

She isn't you
And she isn't you
She sure is something
But she's not you
