Biography

Jay Rockwell is a recording artist, song writer, music producer and performer from Chicago. Born and raised in Rockwell Garden Housing Projects on the Westside of Chicago where he learned early what good soul music was all about.. I grew up listening to artist like Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Earth Wind and Fire, Gamble & Huff, Bob Marley and a ton of gospel music being that I was raised in my families baptist church. It was artist like these that fueled my passion for a career in music at an early age.
In early 2000 myself and younger brother Xavier (X) formed a rap group called Well Connected and released our first single titled “This Place of Ours” featuring platinum R&B singer R.Kelly.

Jay Rockwell later moved from Chicago to Los Angeles to further his career in music..
He established a buzz in Los Angeles from performing at live venues, open mics, music festivals and events such as The Blaze of Hope, an annual charity event in LA hosted by Tupac Shakur’s former managers Leila Steinberg and Cheryl Rich. Jay released his first single while in California titled "My Angels" and began promoting and performing it throughout the US and abroad selling 10's of thousands of my cds, digital downloads and merchandise.

Jay Rockwell's new studio single titled "OKAY" has been currently released on CD Baby, iTunes, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon and tons of other digital music sources. When Jays not on the road performing and promoting, he spends time with his family and time in the studio recording new tracks with some of the hottest artist and producers in the industry today.
When asked what is the motivation behind his music, Jay's response is:  “hoping that my lyrics and music will be a testimony that will provide others with the belief, encouragement and motivation needed to take their lives and careers to higher heights. That’s what music is, a sharing of ideas, hopes, ambitions and culture.”

Lyrics

Amount to Nothing

Written By: Jay Rockwell Phillips. Produced by SoundMaster "T"

(Chorus)
People always said I'd amount to nothing
now I'm sitting on things, having something
peanut butter jag with the system bumping
look at your boy now, I came from nothing

(1st. Verse)
I slide thru my 'ole neighborhood in a coupe
money green jaguar sitting on twenty two's
all the shorty's in the projects chase my car
and scream my name out, Im a ghetto superstar
it feels good, cause I use to be like them
nappyhead project boy way back then
looking up to the hustlaz thats all I saw
I use to say to myself one day Im'a ball
when I grow up, Im'a get cheese like them
move momma out the hood, ride clean like them
and sure enough, thats exactly what I did
I became a big wig in this music biz
I slide through the hood to inspire the kids
make 'em feel like, they can do it if I did it
whenever I'm in town I come back for a visit
throw money out the window thats how I'm living

(Chorus)
People always said I'd amount to nothing
now I'm sitting on things, having something
peanut butter jag with the system bumping
look at your boy now, I came from nothing

(2nd Verse)
That old black intrepid I don't ride no more
them old clothes that I had, I don't have no more
I'm in the video's looking like a million bucks
black boy out them project buildings what
riding all kinda cars with the custom paint
I use to fear the fed's, now I'm at the federal bank
making deposits, fresh new gear in my closet
chain hang to my d%@k, don't get me started
all the shorty's tell me, they want to be like me
I tell 'em, keep it smooth you can be like me
stay out of trouble and don't give up on your dreams
and in time just like me you'll succeed
and come back to the neighborhood and tell your story
and maybe one day you'll inspire other shorty's
y'all see me on the tv at the music awards
with the stars, it's y'all that I'm doing it for

(Chorus)
People always said I'd amount to nothing
now I'm sitting on things, having something
peanut butter jag with the system bumping
look at your boy now, I came from nothing

(3rd. Verse)
Black businessman young entrepreneur
they told that I couldn't do it thats a lot of manure
look at me now, boy I'm from the ghetto too
you couldn't imagine all the type of sh#t that I've been through
incarcerated, shot at and damn near died
many nights momma sat in the window and cried
wondering, if I was coming back alive
I figured, I better do something right with my life
before I end up dead or in jail for life
so I wrote about my life and put it down on the mic
recorded songs put my cd out in the street
hustled all day and night started making some cheese
started an independent label so the family can eat
Goodtimes Entertainment Autfit "G's"
we went from local to worldwide doing our thang
you can do the same joe, gotta step up your game though ooh

(Chorus)
People always said I'd amount to nothing
now I'm sitting on things, having something
peanut butter jag with the system bumping
look at your boy now, I came from nothing
