"Jay Properly Medicated"

Exclusive Interview

Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
Well, I was born in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Alabama when I was real small and grew up there as well. I started writing when I was 5th grade and started rapping seriously when I was in 9th grade. I’ve been trying to make my own way into the game ever since.

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
Well, right now I’ve got two songs I’m anxious to get out but the one we’re rocking with right now is called Properly Medicated featuring my fam Kalico Mick. It’s a slower song than I’ve normally done but it’s something everybody can relate to.

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
I think the biggest challenge for me personally has been avoiding the fakes that are around in the industry, a lot of people will claim they have you and your best interest in mind but in actuality they are trying to snake their way into your pockets or whatever else. That’s why I’m careful of who I associate myself with because it seems as though there are more scammers and frauds than real people.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
The biggest setback for me most recently was about for the last year I was focused on this group I was in called Soopuh with somebody I thought was serious about making steps to be successful in the game, but the situation turned into everything being placed on my shoulders making contacts, getting beats together, setting up shows, etc.

So I figured I might as well focus back on my solo thing if everything was going to fall on me anyway. So in turn I’ve made some good connects, done some good shows, and put some good records out; plus everybody that’s on my team now is ready to do what it takes to be successful in the game.

What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Some things that I tell some of my fam that are trying to get into the game is make sure you take care of your paperwork first! Soundxchange, BMI or ASCAP, BDs and Mediabase, copyright your shit! You take care of your paperwork then people tend to take you more serious as an artist.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
I would suggest that you be ready to invest in yourself, have a budget, and that promotion is the key. Promotion is what I’m focusing more on right now be ready to get out there with the people, the fans, do shows , etc.

What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
My favorite way to promote and get my music out there is by doing shows, getting out to clubs and networking with DJs; just seeing people face to face and letting people know that I’m serious and that I make good music is the best feeling.
