At age 22 he joined the US Air Force, where he eventually became the primary National Anthem singer on Langley AFB, Virginia. This followed him to Al Udeid AB, Qatar and Bagram AB, Afghanistan. While in Bagram he won BAF Idol. While he was on his way back to the States from Afghanistan, he won Manas Idol at Manas AB, Kyrgyzstan.
In 2014 he began work on his first solo Album: “Triumph Over Trials/ Hope Through The Hurt”. He released two singles from that project: “Nothing Compares” in 2015, and “The Desert” in 2016.
After the underwhelming results of his first project, J Cook went on hiatus to focus on family. In late 2018, after two years, he began to write again. His come back single, “Christ Like”, released in January of 2019.
