Bio

Born and raised in north Alabama, the earlier Muscle Shoals players influenced and shaped singer / songwriter, Jason “J. Curly” Speegle’s, unique sound and style as a Roots Rock artist. As a young teenager, just listening to Aretha Franklin’s, The Weight, set the impassioned J. Curly on a path to become the commanding slide guitarist he is today.

“Speegle is one of the most entertaining, energetic, soulful musicians around and brings an electrifying touch…Speegle played a solo blues number on slide guitar as well as any ‘Delta Blues Man’ could.” (Leon Russell concert review, Vail Daily)

The J. Curly Band’s self-titled album, now available on SF1 Music, debuted in the Top 50 of the national Roots Music Chart in its first week of release.

"One of the best Southern Rock Bands in the USA...J. Curly Speegle performing the lead vocal and laying down some ingeniously cool guitar licks takes this recording to the level of extraordinary... Without a doubt this is truly one of the most triumphant CD's we have ever heard here at Roots Music Report. Southern Rock, Blues, and Roots Rock at it's best’’. (5 Stars, Roots Music Report)

As J. Curly’s debut album proves, his music spans the genres of Roots Rock, Southern Rock, Blues, and R & B. “Years of exposure on the road will do it to you,” he says. Songs like "The River" illustrate J. Curly's desire to keep coming home to Alabama, where his musical roots began.

His early mentor, Owen Brown, once bass player for Eddie Hinton, played for J. Curly rounding out an historic, yet fresh, swamper sound. History and simplicity are common threads throughout his songwriting.

J. Curly’s extensive touring career includes his role as lead guitarist and vocalist for Leon Russell for several years. He has also lent his talents to Taylor Hicks, Adam Hood, Damon Johnson, and O’teil Burbridge, to name a few.

Although he still adores the stage, his most recent passions for songwriting and studio work have launched him into the Indie artist scene with his debut album, The J. Curly Band, recorded in Alabama and Nashville, mastered by Mark Lambert, and with his new band, some of the finest seasoned players from the Southland. His second album is well underway.

The J. Curly Band and J. Curly Trio are on the road playing select dates this Fall and Winter.
