Born April 15, 1985, Joseph “JD ERA” Dako was raised in Mississauga, Ontario and developed a love for music at an early age. This love keeps him listening to everything from Jay-Z to James Brown. He started rapping at the age of 14 and began making a name for himself throughout ciphers at local shows and concerts. At age 16 Era began writing rhymes and entered and won his first freestyle competition. His passion for battling other emcees has gained him a reputation as one of the top freestyle lyricists in Toronto. This summer he solidified his reputation with a victory at the Mark Ecko Getting Up Festival’s Freestyle Competition. Under the watchful eye of an energetic crowd and prestigious judges such as Mr.X, JD defeated 15 other emcees and emerged as the last man standing. This was one of the many highlights in his young and promising career.

Only twenty years young, JD is well aware that he is fairly new to the industry, and is more then willing to pay his dues. This summer he was one of the few featured artists on the Nike Battlegrounds Coat Of Arms compilation. He was also invited to perform in front of thousands at the Nike Battlegrounds tournament alongside international artist Kardinal Offishall among others. By the end of 2005 JD had completed two singles added to both Flow 93.5 and 91.5 The Beat. The first track “Ride Clean” received light rotation on both stations. The second, entitled “Take Me Home” featuring Sumeet took urban radio by storm.

Toronto-based rapper and Raekwon protégé JD Era announced his arrival with his No Handouts mixtape earlier this year. Now, he's returned with a new track called "Turn This Up."

The busy beat for this number, which comes courtesy of fellow Torontonian DZL, warrants the song title alone as you'll want to focus in on the bass-heavy riddims. All of it provides a solid atmosphere for Era to deliver his rhymes alongside collaborator Sardokie. - EXLAIM CANADA

Exclusive: The Toronto emcee discusses his relationship with Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon and his newest mixtape featuring Mac Miller, Lex Luger and 9th Wonder.

Canadian rapper JD Era is quickly becoming a household name here in the U.S. But the Toronto emcee is no freshman to the rap game. With his last release Th1rte3n available on I-Tunes and a well-earned reputation as one of Canada’s best freestylers, the award-winning emcee is the marquee artist to represent Raekwon’s Ice H20 Records, making Era’s American debut a defining moment for Canadian Hip Hop. - HIP HOP DX

- BOOKSA-P.COM

Bio

Over the last 5 years the landscape of Canadian hip hop has changed drastically. With more artists crossing borders then ever before, new generations of internationally known entertainers are emerging from the country. A stable name and force in the culture for several years, JD Era is proving with each new release that he's next up. Over the years Era has performed alongside artists like Nas, Gza, Kardinal Offishall, Tyga, Drake, Method Man, Red Man, Raekwon, Ryan Leslie, Ghostface Killah, Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, Gucci Mane, The Clipse, Mac Miller, Terminology, Currensy and Freddie Gibbs to name a few. With 5 solid mix tapes that received acclaim, Era has charted on Much Music and other notable music countdowns with his always-stunning visuals. In 2011, Era secured the theme song spot on The Score networks Court Surfing, an NBA program broadcast across Canada as well as the Footlocker Nike commercial "Comeback Season" ft. NHL Hockey Player PK Subban & NBA Player Tristan Thompson.

2012 and 2013 would become landmark years in Era's career, after catching the attention of Wu-Tang legend Raekwon, he was signed to the Chef's newly formed indie imprint Ice H20 Records. This coincided with an American tour, and a formal introduction of the Toronto underground vet to the American urban industry. Ice H20 built an office and set up shop on Yonge Street to better coordinate and work with Era and the presence and change in the Canadian industry was immediately felt. Era's latest project "No Hand Out's" featured cuts with Raekwon, Mac Miller, and production from 9th Wonder and Lex Luger among others.

All of Era's releases for the project began hitting major American media and blogs from the jump, the whole industry was taking notice and starting to put a face to the name. With features on XXLMag.com, TheSource, XclusivesZone, 2DopeBoyz, RapRadar and more of the industry's top taste making sites, the buzz for Era and his movement began to grow. While slowing building his name south of the border, his career in Canada was sky rocketing. With video's hitting Canada's national video station Much Music, and constant performances; the deluxe iTunes version of the "No Handouts" was nominated for the 2013 Juno Awards for Best Rap Recording.

While Era had been supported for years by many of Canada's leading urban media outlets, the music industry as a whole was now seeing him develop before their eyes. Becoming a playlist regular at Canada's top urban radio station Flow 93.5 FM in Toronto, Era built a solid and supportive fan base. Multiple cuts from "No Handouts" would wind up hitting airwaves internationally as well; Era was coming into his own. After multiple appearances with Wu-Tang Clans Raekwon, Era also put in some work on the Chef's latest project "Unexpected Victory" with 5 features and 2 lead videos for tracks "Just A Toast" & "Soldier Story". "Unexpected Victory" gained Era a tour with Raekwon. They completed a 13-date Canadian tour across Canada and wrapped up a 40-date U.S Tour which lead up to the official release of "No Handouts" released April 16th 2012 and aptly referred to as 416.

Currently recording his follow up project to "No Handouts" and constantly working and traveling, JD Era is gearing up to start dropping new releases this summer in preparation for the official "JD Era No Handouts" Canadian Tour. With some major features and singles in the works, the new project promises to raise the bar even further for the Toronto MC's career and take him to new heights. Catch JD Era in your city bringing his Juno nominated project on the road across Canada this summer!

Honing his skills as a crowd rocker on over 50 dates last year, Era is a known entertainer and gives his all every time he touches the stage. Check out some live footage of JD Era on the road here: http://youtu.be/wP4nprpJ9mM
