"So This Is How It Starts With Jean Mallia"

JEAN MALLIA is a pop/rocker from Flemington, NJ. This teenaged artist began compiling material and recording her first EP at the age of fifteen, finally releasing it to the masses in January of 2009.

The EP, titled "So This Is How It Starts...," is a three-song release that showcases MALLIA's talented songwriting ability. All of the music and lyrics on the EP were written by Jean herself. On the CD, MALLIA had help from her producer Robert Sands of Sands Creative Studios, Inc. Sands performed as a session player on piano and synthesizers, along with Joseph Conti on bass and electric guitars. Throw in some programmed drum tracks, and multiple background vocalists, and you have a well-done, well-produced sound that both "pops" and "rocks."

The EP is truly a reflection of this young spunky songwriter. MALLIA has a personality that is as infectious as her smile and good looks. Making her radio debut on my program, she was extremely relaxed, upbeat, engaging and very personable. This was never more evident then when she played her song "Prove Me Wrong" live in studio. She stood up, kicked her shoes off and let it rip.

Along with Jean came her father and current drummer STEVE MALLIA, and her "Mom-ager," her mother TERRY MALLIA. MALLIA enjoys the total support of her parents and siblings in all of her musical endeavors. Now, most teenaged musicians would shy away from having a parent in the band, but not MALLIA. She embraces it whole heartedly. Jean told us on air how she "coaxed her dad to get his drums out of the attic, and jam with her." Now the two of them "rock out" in the basement as they prepare for her maiden show at The Bitter End in NYC on Sept. 23rd.

MALLIA began playing piano at the age of four, yet prefers to write her music on the acoustic guitar. Drawing comparisons to Taylor Swift, MALLIA now has a desire to escape that stereotype and take on a more "indie artist" sound. Her future plans are to diversify her sound and attempt new and different styles in her music. "I don't want to be bubble gum pop anymore," she told us as she searched for the proper words to describe the direction that she wishes to take her music. Striving for a more mature sound is this singer/songwriter in her future endeavors, unveiling two new songs live in-studio that differed from the EP in a way that leads one to believe that she'll accomplish her goal.

Keep a sharp eye out for this up-and-coming artist as I think that we'll be hearing more from her in the future. To hear or purchase her EP "So This Is How It Starts...," you can do so at CD Baby and Dig Station, or they are always available at her shows. "Raritan Township Songwriter Contender On Facebook"

A Raritan Township 17-year-old is a contender in Facebook's "Idol Competition."
Jean Mallia's song, See If I Care, was leading the 59 submissions as of yesterday with 523 votes -- 171 votes ahead of anyone else -- but a lot could happen between now and March 31 when phase-one voting ends.
Officials will name the 15 finalists on April 15. Ten will be the top vote-getters and five will be selected by music industry professionals. In phase two, Facebook members will vote again April 19-30 to select the grand prize winner.
Facebook is a popular social networking Web site for teens, young adults and a growing number of older people. Its contest focuses on songwriting and performing. The winner will play in New York City and could be signed to a record label.
Jean Mallia was born into a musical family and attended concerts as an infant. She started taking piano lessons at age 4 and had written more than 75 songs by the time she was 14. Now she plays piano, guitar and bass guitar. According to her mother, Terry, being homeschooled allows Jean the flexibility and freedom she needs to pursue a career in the music industry. She characterized her daughter's style as "pop/rock/dirty jazz."
To hear Jean sing her song, go to http://apps.facebook.com/idolcompetition. Click on Jean Mallia and see if See If I Care merits your vote. You must have a Facebook account to vote, but opening one is free.
The chorus is:
Uh oh see if I care
I really do care
I just put on a mask
And I hide behind a song
Seeing you with her
It rubs me down to the bone
Knowing that I was the one
Who was held in those arms

Bio

A teenage pop singer/songwriter with a sophisticated twist is a good way to describe up-and-coming artist Jean Mallia. Playing piano at the age of four, singing since she could speak, and writing her first full length song at five years old, left no doubt in anyone’s mind that music was her drive. Picking up guitar and bass guitar at fourteen gave her the opportunity to create just the sound she was looking for. Growing up on boy bands like Hanson and N’Sync, Jean delivers a sound that’s pleasing to the ear but works the mind. “I want to break the whole cliché of pop music being pure bubble gum music. I like to use lines, words, phrases, that aren’t normally heard in songs, while still capturing the pop get up and dance vibe.” says Jean when asked to describe her style of writing. This young New Jersey native brings music that gets your feet tapping and your head bobbing, with lyrics that lay out a whole story for you to enjoy

"She is a song writing machine!"-Robert Sands:Composer and Producer. www.robertsandsmusic.com

So this is how it starts...... My name is Jean Mallia but most people call me Jeannie. I have been playing the piano since I was 5 years old. When I was in kindergarden I started a band with my best friend at the time, Katie. We wrote some songs together (I look back at them now and laugh). Once I started homeschooling we kindof grew apart. But I knew I wanted to be a musician. My parents are very musicaly talented. My father grew up with the members of Bon Jovi and even taught the drummer how to play the drums. My dad was supposed to be the drummer for the band but gave it up to start a family with my mom. He wanted to be a professional drummer, but he gave up his dream for me. My mom was very active in the theater. She was a great actress and singer. She wanted to be a professional singer, but gave it up for me. My father still would play little gigs with a cover band he had until my older sister was born. My dad looks at how well Bon Jovi is doing now and though he doesn't regret having his family,he is jealous of all the fame and fortune he could have had. My passion is music. I can look at something and think of lyrics to a song right away. My parents gave up their dreams for me. And I want to live not only my dreams of being a musican but also live my parents dream that they gave up for me. Now... I'm 17 years old and live in New Jersey. I play piano, guitar, bass guitar, a little bit of drums and I sing. I write my own music. I'm inspired by many people especially my friends. I write the majority of my music about the situations my friends go through, because nothing really ever happens to me (with boyfriends and that kindof drama = P).Vanessa Carlton and Dave Yaden are the two musicians I really look up to. Listening to their music makes me want to do better. They are my idols. The list of people who inspire me is pretty long, but just look underneath my "influences" section to see more. I don't want to be a huge musican, and I don't think I ever will be. But I'm going to follow my dreams and do what I love to do. And no one will ever stop me = )
