"Reviews of 2012 cd "Beautifully Strange""

I certainly loved loved loved this recording, right from the first chord. It's well recorded and warm and you can turn it up so it fills the car and it still sounds peaceful. The songs are beautiful, lovely lyrics, poignant melodies. So beautifully and effortlessly sung. I love the in tune-ness, the breaks into falsetto, the way the melodies and lyrics don't where you'd expect, thoughtful solo stuff...love the guitar leads, love the bass, the vibes, the strings...surprising and sensuous arrangements. All the instrumental and vocal parts are subtle and well rendered. It's dreamlike chordally, melodically and lyrically. And for me it's like many lessons in composition and arrangement. I already have favorite parts and songs I play over. Jeanne, you and your band should be really proud of this. Boy, I can tell you're a painter! The lyrics are so visual...Congratulations and thank you for letting me hear it. It's so solid and I'm so impressed. Your friend and fan,
Michael Smith

"Like a southwestern Cowbella, Jeanne Kuhns and her band Lost Mothra fearlessly ride the mesas and valleys of the tender and hopeful feminine plain. With a lovely voice,
sweet production sensibilities, and arrangements that both cradle and float her songs like dandelions on a warm wind, she reminds us all that the best journeys always begin with an eye on the
horizon and a sweet song to sing as you go..." Krista Detor

"Jeanne Kuhns: singer/songwriter/soulful sister"

"This is one of those albums (13 songs nary a clinker) that seems determined to take over your plans (like going to sleep), demanding to be heard again. And again. The lyrics and music have invaded your being; your mind is occupied territory... "

"Review of "Star People""

"Star People is a well crafted eloquent song that will elevate your soul with elegant vocals. The arrangements, production, and vocals are of the highest caliber. The natural progression of the tempo and the smooth rhythms flesh out the vocals beautifully."

"Jeanne Kuhns: Lost Moth Found"

"Jeanne Kuhns, weaves mystical lyrics and intriguing musical patterns into a “bluesy progressive folk” mix. She is sonically and stylistically something of a mix of Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell and an acoustically inclined Bonnie Raitt.” - ~ Crow and Wolf Music

Bio

Small Forest

Jeanne Kuhns-Marybeth Mattson-Patrick Palmer

Jeanne Kuhns has been performing her whole life and was part of the folk scene at festivals and coffee shop venues in the 1970's. After raising three children she stepped back into the music world in Door County, Wi in the late 90's. By 2004 she had performed solo and as back up singer to many Door County artists. In 2004 she started the Jeanne Kuhns' Concert series at the Town Hall Bakery in Jacksonport, Wi, bringing together Door County performers for songwriting circles and solo shows. Kuhns started the band Lost Mothra in 2007 when she met guitarist George Sawyn and bassist Patrick Palmer, they performed Jeanne's songs and jazz and blues covers. In 2004 Kuhns' concert series had grown out of the little Town Hall Bakery and moved over to Woodwalk Gallery and Events Barn in Egg Harbor and this series has grown to 24 performances in a summer season, combining nationally known artists like Peter Mulvey and Corky Seigel with favorite local artists. In 2012 the singer/songwriter band Small Forest was formed, when Jeanne Kuhns and her daughter Mary Beth Mattson began cowriting and singing together. With Jeanne and Marybeth writing from very different backgrounds this band has a more contemporary folk sound, with strong lyrics and solid unexpected melody lines  with glorious harmonies. Small Forest has been performing in venues all over Door County, and the midwest including Uncommon Ground in Chicago, the Wisconsin Singer Songwriter series, Steel Bridge Songfest, Wild Rice Concert Series, Woodwalk Concert series and theater concerts as well at venues like Door County Auditorium Fireside Series and Third Avenue Playhouse and many outdoor venues all summer long in Door County, Wi. Jeanne Kuhns has 5 cds, the latest with "Lost Mothra" called "Beautifully Strange". Marybeth Mattson released her premier CD, Relative Hunger in 2012. Small Forest recently launched a successful IndieGoGo campaign to fund their new CD Dream, which was recorded in Door County and features all original Small Forest music with special guests artists accompanying them.

Small Forest performs their original progressive folk/rock music and occasional diverse covers by artists such as Snow Patrol, Lucinda Williams, Dylan, Fiona Apple and more.  The Small Forest sound is melodic modern folk, wonderful lyrical storytelling set off by exquisite harmonies accompanied by strong rhythm guitar, bass, and various percussion instruments. Passionate, positive energy with humor and heart radiates from their performance, and their obvious love of performing together is tangible!

Jeanne Kuhns, Marybeth Mattson and Patrick Palmer are Door County, Wisconsin based and have been part of the Midwest music scene as solo acts or in other bands for over a decade and have an established following.

Small Forest features the mother/daughter songwriting team of Marybeth Mattson and Jeanne Kuhns, their sound is unique, stretching traditional folk boundaries, they invite you into their hearts, offering music medicine for the soul. A Small Forest CD is in the works, Marybeth Mattson and Jeanne Kuhns both have solo cds.

"Small Forest" is at home in many different venues from small house concerts to 1000 seat concert venues!  An energetic, fun, yet beautiful soulful sound, Small Forest connects well with audiences large or small.
