Jeff Alan Greenway

 Toronto, Ontario, CAN
BandPopSinger/Songwriter

Jeff's music is an original mix of 70s inspired pop, jazz, soul and folk similar to early Elton John, Billy Joel and Tori Amos. He's received 3 honorable mentions in international songwriting contests and a profile on Song Talk Radio (Ryerson) and the Scene (Rogers TV). His music can be heard on CBC and college radio, and it is available on iTunes and all major online retailers.

Biography

"Jeff rocked our little studio with some powerful piano chops and heartfelt vocals. Whether it’s a call for closeness (Open These Doors), an on-again, off-again affair (No More Hellos), or a bitter missive to a friendship that always ends up in conflict (Eye for an Eye), Jeff’s songs grab you by the heart and won’t let go."
- Phil Emery, Song Talk Radio

"Jeff’s approach very much reminds me of an early Billy Joel . . . he expresses hope, he expresses sadness and his lyrics are saturated with feeling . . . it's a smooth, tender expression [that] strikes for the heart."
- Johnny Sixstring, weloverocknpop.com

"JAG plays piano with a theatrical flair in the classic tradition of Rufus Wainwright, Elton John, Queen and Tori Amos."
- William McGuirk, Scene and Heard

Jeff Alan Greenway (j.a.g.) is a singer/songwriter and pianist from Toronto, Canada. His music has received rave reviews and airplay on CBC, Fairchild and college radio. He has just released his first new single for 2016, "I Need".

His music is a blend of pop, rock and jazz featuring some of the best Canadian musical talent in Toronto: Noah Zacharin (guitar) and Mark Zubek (guitar, bass, drums and percussion), Andrew Lauzon (bass), as well as many gifted up-and-coming musicians such as Chino De Villa (K.C. Roberts) and Ben Miller (God Made Me Funky).

Jeff has been playing piano since the age of 3, and writing and singing for almost as long. Well-known on the Toronto music scene as both a singer/songwriter and a keyboard player for the likes of indie darlings Cai.ro and Marcus Walker, he has played many venues such as C'est What, the Supermarket, Musideum and the Distillery District as a solo performer.

His music has sparked comparisons to early Billy Joel and Elton John, Jamie Cullum and Ben Folds. But a deeper listen will unearth elements of XTC, Tori Amos and Sarah MacLachlan, among many others.

"I grew up listening to early Billy Joel, Supertramp, Squeeze, XTC, and a lot of 80s bands", says Jeff. "I think that reflects in my songs - I try to make them complex enough to be interesting, both lyrically and musically, so that people come back again to listen".

Formally educated in jazz piano and arranging at Humber College, Jeff studied with such renowned pianists as Dave Restivo and Canadian jazz great, Bernie Senensky.

His talents have been recognized with a FACTOR Canada New Talent Award, three honorable mentions in international songwriting competitions and a profile on Song Talk Radio ("The Scope" at Ryerson) and Rogers TV.

Jeff is currently doing promotional shows for his new single, "I Need" and album "Great Expectations". He is available for performances, reviews and interviews.

Lyrics

No More Hellos

Written By: Jeff Alan Greenway

She comes with a smile
With love and denial
Her grace and her youth
Awakes an old man

I give her a home
It’s all that I own
But the battle is won
So she changes her mind

No more goodbyes
No more hellos

She sits on my knee
She tells me she needs
But if I reach out
Like a whisper she’s gone

So I put this foot down No more playing the clowns
But the circus won’t leave town
And she changes her mind
Who’s changing?
I’m changing, you’re changing

No more goodbyes
No more hellos
Hello, hello

She comes with a smile
With love and denial
But if I reach out
Like a whisper she’s gone

No more goodbyes
No more hellos
Hello, hello

Eye For An Eye

Written By: Jeff Alan Greenway

Follow me to the tree
That we planted so young, so young
Stretched to the sky
All branches tied up and tangled so long, so long
Too far, too far gone

A hand for a hand
A smile for a smile, and if we wait awhile
An eye for an eye

A curse for a dream
A kick, a surprise as we waltz into sunrise
An eye for an eye
For an eye

Make our peace
And rip to pieces the lies that bind
Out of sight
Is out of mind, so we trip as we go blind
The razor wire unwinds

A hand for a hand
A smile for a smile, and if we wait awhile
An eye for an eye

A curse for a dream
A kick, a surprise as we waltz into sunrise
An eye for an eye
For an eye

Great Expectations

Great Expectations

Hey - hey, I can't find my way
Can you help me I'm falling
Followed the signs to where I am today
Suddenly found I can't read them

I thought you knew - you thought I knew
And together we both kept tumbling down
With great expectations

When we met we were a happy two
Now we're one we can't find us
Somewhere in me is a part of you
Lost along with your kindness

I looked for me - you looked for you
Different planets with different points of view
With great expectations

No - no - no!

No - I won't be a party to this
No - I won't trade my heart for a fist
No - I won't be a party to this crime
I've done my time

Hey - hey, I can't find my way
Can you help me I'm falling
Clinging to dreams from a better day
Lost the map how to find them

I thought you knew - you thought I knew
And together we both kept tumbling down
With great expectations

I looked for me - you looked for you
Different planets with different points of view
With great expectations

No - no - no!

Cavalry

Cavalry

I just don't know what to say
I'm at a loss just what to say
I don't feel anymore
I can't give anymore

This well has bled bone dry
Yet you ask for just one more try
I can't give any more from these hands

Can you tell the wrong from right and
Which one we should stand and fight for
Do we see anymore
Can we love anymore

We both were caught in this maze
At first it's fun 'til you're lost for days
I don't want any more of this game

There's no Superman
There won't be any cavalry
Rushing to save you and me

There's no master plan
There's no magic carpet ride
There's nowhere for you and me to hide

I just don't know what to think
Can you please tell me what to think
I don't know anymore
I don't believe anymore

The leaves have turned and this chill won't end
You still think summer's round the bend
I can't give anymore to this game

Let it go, let it go
Why can't you let it go?
A caged bird will sing only sad songs to you

Let it free, let it fly
Let these hearts open wide
When the sun returns they might find each other again

I Need

Written By: Jeff Alan Greenway

©2015 Jeff Alan Greenway

(She says:)

”I need a love
Not a hand to hold
I need a love
I don't need a good soul”
”I need a love
I need the spark and the fire
I don't need to be told
What it is I desire”
And as I step away
From all that she can say
She says: “I need a love
Don't come home”

”I need some time
Some things I have to find on my own
I need some time
Just alone”
”I need a love
And I don't care what it takes
I'll bend this friendship
'Til it breaks”
She doesn't need this love I bring
She's looking for some other thing
She says: “I need a love
Don't come home”
And I gave all I can
And I met the demands
But somehow I still worry
She's waiting for me to rescue her from herself
And she still can't say "I'm sorry"

So I say: “I need a love
I need a heart I can hold
I need a love
I need a good soul”
”I need some honesty
I need the clothes on my back
And the more I see it
Not much more than that”
And as she steps away
From all that I can say I say
“I need a love
Please come home.”
I said “I need a love
Please come home.”
