Jeff Eaton

BandPopAdult Contemporary

Jeff strives to connect with the soul of the listener lyrically in a way that leaves each convinced the song was written personally for them. His songs communicate emotion and relationship that most are seldom able to express in a style that is aptly labeled “Music to Rock the Soul”.

Biography

It goes like this: you fall in love with music. You listen to the radio like the DJ is pouring the music right into your head. One day you think “How hard can it be to do this myself?” and you pick up a guitar.

If you’re Jeff Eaton, you’re only nine years old when you get that guitar, and you’re in your first band by the seventh grade.

Jeff grew up in Oregon — “wild, to put it mildly” — and stayed wild into adulthood. He partied hard, and music was always there. “We’d go to the bars, get drunk, go home and get our guitars, go back to the bar and play,” he says of his days in Mississippi.

So when it was time to clean up his life and ditch the drugs, music had to go, too. Cleaning up meant leaving his old life: the people, the places he used to hang out, and the music.

“When you’re getting away from something, when you’re trying to get to a safe zone, you go as far as you can in the opposite direction,” he says.

It was eight years before Jeff could come back to music without worrying it might pull him back over to the wrong side of the road. When he did, he was tougher and wiser, and had a deep wish to reach people, relate to them and comfort them through music. Deciding that “music isn’t just a bunch of fun and games,” he teamed up with Top-40 producer Ken Mary (who has worked with Trik Turner, Alice Cooper, The Phunk Junkeez, and LaRue) for his second release, the approachable, thoughtful “Wish You Were Here.”

The album is polished, warm and distinctly American: rootsy guitar, soaring harmonies and earnest vocals layered over driving rock. The album’s candid lyrics and passionate, yearning songs tap into Jeff’s struggle of getting his life back under control: “They’re about some of the helplessness and powerlessness I felt when I was trying to walk away from that life,” he says.

They’re also intimately connected with his own faith, which gave him the strength he needed to clean up his life.

“I don’t want to just preach to the choir,” he says. “I like to write songs you can’t pigeonhole, not just praise and worship songs. That’s where the subtlety comes in. People can take a lot from the songs — there’s enough there that when they think about it, they think ‘Hey, he wasn’t just talking about my relationship with my girlfriend,’ or whatever.”

Ultimately, though, the songs are meant to make a connection.

“People get overwhelmed sometimes by an emotion, and they can only feel relieved if they can find music that completely captures it. I know how they feel; I’ve been there.”

Flood

I’ve been standing here
At the edge of time, and
Seems I’ve been running
Against the tide
As I’m standing here
I don’t want to cry, but
I feel resistance
The harder I try

Chorus:
I’ve been standing against this flood
I’ve been standing against this sudden rush of blood

I’ve been walking
For so long now
I fight this emotion
That grips my soul
If I can’t hold out
I’ll be sure to fall, so I
Cling to devotion
Behind this wall

Bridge:
I’m straining just to hear
Hanging between hope and fear
I’m still stranded here
I’m still fighting back these tears

I’ve been standing here
At the edge of time, and
Seems I’ve been running
Against the tide

Take Your Breath Away

I saw you standin there
Looked like you didn’t care
That the world was passing by
Like you just wanna run and hide and
Each day with nothing new
In this life you’re living through
Makes you wanna cry
No matter how you try

Prechorus:
Oh, I, I could hear the whispers
As you turned and walked away
And I can’t help but listen
To every word you say, cuz…

Chorus:
I wanna be the one that you can count on
When you fall down
I wanna be the one you can rely on
To be around
I wanna be the one you know
Who takes your breath away
Take your breath away
I want to take your breath away

Didn’t I hear you say
That love was just a game
For kings and fools
One that always ends the same, but
You wouldn’t let it show
But now that you’re letting go
I’ll run to you
No matter where you are

Bridge:
You know I gave my life
To take away your pain
And you know that I’d do anything
To bring you back again

Calling On Angels

She's so broken
So battered and worn
A loss in the battle
Between right and wrong
She sees redemption
But she hesitates
A light in the distance
But not so far away

- Chorus -
So she's calling, calling on angels
(I know she needs a light)
Yea, she's calling, calling on angels
(A candle burning bright)
Yea, she's calling, calling on angels
(A lamp in the night)
Because it's so dark
In the shadows of the night

She tries so hard
Through endless nights
Seeking conclusion
With no end in sight
So she finds comfort
Back in her youth
Where faith was an anchor
Grounded in truth

- Bridge -
She hides in dreams
By flickering candlelight
Where she finds the answers
To carry her through the night

Wish You Were Here

Wish You Were Here

I’m standing here hoping to hear
That this story will turn out all right
Searching the years to see through these tears
But afraid of the things I will find

Pre-chorus:
I’ve been here searching for hours
But I still don’t know what was lost

Chorus:
I wish you were here (I never knew)
I wish you were here (the times that were few)
I wish you were here (but I never told you)
I wish you were here

I can’t look back on things I’ve been through
For answers to questions of time
The time never spent and time that won’t mend
Are questions still haunting my mind

Bridge:
I’m so tired
I know I tried to make it right
I’m so tired
But I know I’ll make it
I’m gonna make it through the night

Outside Your Door

How could I have messed it up
As I was standin right outside Your door
I guess that I was skippin out
Didn’t wanna talk it out

I was really shaken up
To think that I could step outside Your grace
It seemed that I was walkin out
You could see me reachin out

But I can never turn back time – there’s no more I can do
So one more time I’ll give it all up for You – and I sing
I don’t wanna live outside Your grace
It’s You that I’ve been living for
I don’t wanna live outside Your space
It’s You that I’ve been fighting for
I just wanna stay here in this place
Right outside Your door

If I could only make it up
If I could ever get back to this place
It took so long to figure out
I’m the one You singled out

Bridge:
Can you hear me knocking?
Knocking at Your door?
It’s You that I’ve been waiting for

Your Love

Your Love

How beautiful
Is Your love
This consuming fire
Reaching down from above
How beautiful
Is Your love
Lifting me higher
Consumed by Your love

My words
Won’t express
The e-motion
That comes from this

But there’s just so much that I could feel
That’s just too much to conceal
How beautiful
Is Your love
This consuming fire
Reaching down from above

My words
Won’t express
The e-motion
That comes from this

But there’s just so much that I could feel
That’s just too much to conceal
How beautiful
Is Your love
This consuming fire
Reaching down from above

I’m not so sure just how much it shows
Or how it really started
But this thing I know just how much it grows
To heal this broken-hearted

How beautiful
Is Your love
This consuming fire
Reaching down from above
How beautiful
Is Your love
Lifting me higher
Consumed by Your love
