Jefferson Montoya

To Be Determined (Self-released)

The jazzy acoustic folk of Jefferson Montoya isn't something I normally go for here, but I'm more than a little impressed by this singer/songwriter's ability to bring genuine passion to his creative efforts. To Be Determined... is an independent project from top to bottom, which means Montoya did it all: writing, recording, designing, financing, distributing and even performing all the instruments (guitars, bass drums, keys) on these dozen tracks, half of which were recorded live. The lovely flamenco-tinged, minor-chord love ballad "Get It Now" is probably the CD's highlight, followed by the stripped-down and broken-up anguish of "Not My Place." Lyrically, Montoya could probably stand to be a bit more ambitious. On the other hand, the "electronic tomb" of a quiet cell phone in "Why Haven't You Called" is the most original thing I've heard in months. If you like sophisticated coffee house material, Montoya is your man.

"Original (Review of Why Haven't You Called"

"I quite liked this track. The acoustic guitar is played to perfection. Each note rings out clearly and the harmonics plucked effortlessly. The chorus, especially has an interesting chord progression- very original and unexpected.
The vocals are spot on, too. The singer handles the fairly unusual melody faultlessly. " - Alan Grier, Lancashire, UK

Listener’s Are Saying. . .

“I have several CDs in my car including a set of "Learning to Speak Spanish." I was resisting the music and actually starting to learn a little Spanish until I received Jefferson's “To Be Determined. . ." Now I not only can speak no Spanish, but am also wasting valuable gasoline keeping the car running when I get to work so that I can hear the end of a song. This CD should come with a warning.”
- L. Workman, Scottsdale, AZ

“Exceptional Great guitar work and wonderful vocals. The vocals are full and resonant. They are in tune and powerful. This is somewhat alternative sounding in style. The overall song builds and has an intriguing melody. The guitarist shows great technique and carries the entire instrumental background of the song. Yet it is full and complete. The rhythmic ability of the guitarist's playing totally drives the song excellently. Great job!”
- D. Kozsey, FL; Garageband.com Review of "Enough of You"

“Jefferson's lyrics flow with a passionate "how life feels" emotion. His songs are captivating.”
- C. Thomas, Boulder City, NV - various

Bio

Jefferson was raised in Carbon County, Utah. It is a rural space where people are sensible, compassionate, responsible, hard working and embody the term survivor.

In this space he learned to write music that reflected those qualities but also displayed the tonal and rhythmic influeces of Jazz, Classical, Opera, Musical Theatre, and even Heavy Metal that he gained through life.

A classically trained tenor with more collegiate studies in composition and jazz percussion, Jefferson Montoya offers more depth than the popular music of today.

He resides now in Las Vegas, NV where he writes and performs.
