The jazzy acoustic folk of Jefferson Montoya isn't something I normally go for here, but I'm more than a little impressed by this singer/songwriter's ability to bring genuine passion to his creative efforts. To Be Determined... is an independent project from top to bottom, which means Montoya did it all: writing, recording, designing, financing, distributing and even performing all the instruments (guitars, bass drums, keys) on these dozen tracks, half of which were recorded live. The lovely flamenco-tinged, minor-chord love ballad "Get It Now" is probably the CD's highlight, followed by the stripped-down and broken-up anguish of "Not My Place." Lyrically, Montoya could probably stand to be a bit more ambitious. On the other hand, the "electronic tomb" of a quiet cell phone in "Why Haven't You Called" is the most original thing I've heard in months. If you like sophisticated coffee house material, Montoya is your man.
