In his Asheville home, Jeff Johansson wrote, played the instruments and recorded all ten tracks on ‘This Delicate Wall.’ The recording began as a demo in the spring of 2007, and Johansson hoped it would help find like-spirited musicians and get local gigs. Gradually however, it became a fully-realized solo work, at times sparse and haunting, and at others lush and vibrant. Two songs include long-time friends, singer-songwriter Danielle Howle and former band-mate, bassist Bill Stevens.
An astounding talent on guitar, piano, percussion, and vocals, the name Jeff Johansson has become synonymous with a new take on art-blues and sultry indie folk. Johansson is best known for his piano and keyboard work with the soulful five-man band Petrillo Relents from Columbia, SC, led by Andrew Alvey. Petrillo Relents shared the stage with artists such as The Avett Brothers, Kevn Kinney and Grupo Fanstasma and performed at the Great Atlanta Blues Festival in 2006, before their “final waltz” in 2007.
‘This Delicate Wall’ distinguishes Johansson amid the great talent to be found in the studios, listening rooms and bars of Western North Carolina. Johansson crafts rhythms that travel through a melancholy yet sophisticated country sound to folk styles full of yearning, honesty and hope. The lyrics are at once vulnerable, gracious and earnest.
