Jeff Morris FAR AWAY June 18,/09

PEI singer-songwriter Jeff Morris shows he still has a keen ear for hooks on his second CD 'Far Away', packing more melody per bar into each song than your average pop rocker.

The tracks have a stronger sense of melancholy and the guitars are a shade tougher than on his debut 'afterglow', but that only makes them dig in deeper after Morris' deft song construction grabs your attention.

"Backbeat"

“Morris shows an ear for listener-friendly rock, lots of melody toughened up by solid, crunchy guitar. He's a fine singer too, able to drive the tunes a long on the strength of his voice, and sweeten up the hooks with a clear falsetto...”

"Music Reviews"

“…this 11-song set is a well crafted, well produced effort that finds Morris at the top of his game, churning out smart, guitar driven power pop nuggets and Beatlesque ballads… Morris' hook-laden pop songs are highly accessible and radio friendly, and several tracks have single potential.”

"Not Lame Reviews"

"Jeff Morris has created a sort-of `remember when` power pop gem here on his debut as it intermingles, quite intimately, the most classic sounds of such early 80`s bands as The Hawks, The Producers(and Rick Springfield)… with the more modern touches of the 2002 reunion of Fools Face, The Candy Butchers, The Elms and The JTG Implosion.

Almost all these songs sound like they're ready to take on many different radio formats…”

"Islands Jeff Morris kicks off Rock Stage"

Big beats, Big bass lines, Big vocals. Power pop can be wickedly good when everything comes together the way it's supposed to and it came together for PEI's Jeff Morris Thursday night in Halifax. Morris kicked off the Five and Dime Show, Much Music`s Rock Stage at the East Coast Music Awards here.

Playing on the lower level of the Marquis...Morris and his bandmates still managed to deliver a nearly flawless set of radio-friendly pop tunes from his most recent album, afterglow. Morris has one of those all too-rare voices that are made to order for the kind of super charged pop music he plays with sweet high notes, a dirty midrange and enough power to take either of them anywhere he wants them to go...

"Singer-songwriter returns to Fredericton"

June 29, 2009

Jeff Morris has caught the ear of many Maritime music-lovers with his penchant for catchy guitar riffs and soothing vocals. Now the talented singer-songwriter is making his way back to the capital region for a performance on Canada Day.

And since he just released a new album, titled Far Away, he’s got a few new tunes to play. Morris said he allowed some of his influences to shine through on his latest single — Photograph. “I liked The Police a lot when I was younger so there’s a little bit of that sound in there, and maybe a bit of Maroon 5,” he said. “But the chorus is a straight-ahead, power-pop chorus. We were able to get a bigger, larger studio sound out of the small studio we used for recording. We’re really happy with this song and with all of the songs on it.”

Morris divides his time teaching about 30 music students and playing shows and festivals. He said he regularly shares his experiences as a performing musician with his students and tries to encourage them to take a crack at writing some of their own songs. “I think they think it’s cool. They appreciate the fact that you’re out there playing your music and maybe it’ll inspire them to write their own songs,” he said. “I tell them to put their own creativity to use.”

Morris’ Canada Day performance will take place at 8 p.m. on the pedway stage.

"'Far Away' Review"

With the release of his first solo recording, Afterglow, in 2002, Charlottetown’s Jeff Morris established himself as a writer of hook-laden, melodic pop songs that were made to order for radio.

Some seven years down the road Morris has returned with another strong collection of original pop tunes that have radio stamped all over them.

Morris’s latest project, Far Away, boasts seven new originals, at least three of which have strong singles potential.

And that’s in addition to the title track, which had a trip around the block as a single in 2008, garnering Morris play on a dozen radio stations and securing him a spot in the East Coast Countdown’s top ten for six weeks.

Co-produced by Morris and John Boswell, who also co-wrote the track Why Can’t You Be, Far Away, like its predecessor, strikes a nice balance between upbeat, guitar-driven pop tunes and Beatle-esque ballads.

Morris’ vocals are solid here and his music is well crafted with plenty of hooks.

Prime tracks include the current single, Photograph, Far Away, Forget About It and Jen.

Bio

PEI's Jeff Morris is a purveyor of pure pop-rock. On the heels of his critically acclaimed debut 'afterglow', Morris's 2009 cd release 'Far Away' again displays his unique ability to craft intelligent, radio ready, pop music. A Jazz Studies (guitar performance) college graduate, Jeff has a wide and varied musical background including years touring Canada as a pop-rock recording artist, and as a member of funk/soul ensembles in Vancouver. On 'Far Away', he is able to draw on all of these influences, creating a disc full of clever power pop nuggets and Beatlesque ballads, driven along by his trademark melodies and guitar riffs.

Setting the tone for the new record, the title track "Far Away", and follow up single "Photograph" proved to be successful singles for Morris. Garnering 12 commercial radio station adds and national airplay, both releases remained in the top ten of the 'East Coast Countdown' for six weeks. This success led to two 2010 PEI Music Awards nominations in the Pop Recording, and Male Vocalist categories". In September 2009 Jeff's acoustic pop gem "Cellophane Girl" was selected for the Atlantic Film Festival's 2009 'Music and Image CD Compilation'. In addition, it was one of only three songs chosen for their sponsors reel, to air at every film screening in Halifax .

Morris' 2002 debut album afterglow, recorded at The Factory Studios in Vancouver BC, features a potent blend of striking melodic and lyrical hooks, big guitars, and fluid vocals. Three single releases "Cellophane Girl", "Everything", and "Sitting on the Moon", received heavy commercial radio play throughout Canada.

An award winning songwriter, Jeff has toured throughout Canada and New England sharing the stage with artists such as Bryan Adams, Steve Earle, Blue Oyster Cult, The Tragically Hip, Randy Bachman (BTO),and Tom Cochrane. His festival and music conference official showcases include- NEMO in Boston Mass., multiple ECMA award shows, Festival of the Lights, Granville Green Concert Series, Apple Blossom Festival, and Contact East in St. John's Nfld. Jeff's music was shopped by Vancouver's Pump Records at MIDEM 2010 in France. Two European publishing deals have been signed thus far as a result.

Morris' song "Sitting on the Moon" received an honorable mention in the 2003 John Lennon International Songwriting Competition.
